Book Synopsis The Viennese Café and Fin-de-Siècle Culture by : Charlotte Ashby
Download or read book The Viennese Café and Fin-de-Siècle Culture written by Charlotte Ashby and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2013-01-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Viennese café was a key site of urban modernity around 1900. In the rapidly growing city it functioned simultaneously as home and workplace, affording opportunities for both leisure and intellectual exchange. This volume explores the nature and function of the coffeehouse in the social, cultural, and political world of fin-de-siècle Vienna. Just as the café served as a creative meeting place within the city, so this volume initiates conversations between different disciplines focusing on Vienna at the beginning of the twentieth century. Contributions are drawn from the fields of social and cultural history, literary studies, Jewish studies and art, and architectural and design history. A fresh perspective is also provided by a selection of comparative articles exploring coffeehouse culture elsewhere in Eastern Europe.

Download or read book Word Play written by Ainsley Morse and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Word Play traces the history of the relationship between experimental aesthetics and Soviet children’s books, a relationship that persisted over the seventy years of the Soviet Union’s existence. From the earliest days of the Soviet project, children’s literature was taken unusually seriously—its quality and subject matter were issues of grave political significance. Yet, it was often written and illustrated by experimental writers and artists who found the childlike aesthetic congenial to their experiments in primitivism, minimalism, and other avant‐garde trends. In the more repressive environment following Stalin’s rise to power, experimental aesthetics were largely relegated to unofficial and underground literature, but unofficial writers continued to author children’s books, which were often more appealing than adult literature of the time. Word Play focuses on poetry as the primary genre for both children’s and unofficial literature throughout the Soviet period. Five case studies feature poets‐cum‐children’s writers—Leonid Aronzon, Oleg Grigoriev, Igor Kholin, Vsevolod Nekrasov, and Dmitri Prigov—whose unpublished work was not written for children but features lexical and formal elements, abundant humor, and childlike lyric speakers that are aspects of the childlike aesthetic. The book concludes with an exploration of the legacy of this aesthetic in Russian poetry today. Drawing on rich primary sources, Word Play joins a growing literature on Russian children’s books, connecting them to avant-garde poetics in fresh, surprising ways.

Book Synopsis The Rebel Café by : Stephen R. Duncan
Download or read book The Rebel Café written by Stephen R. Duncan and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An account of how the subterranean nightspots in 1950s New York and San Francisco became social, cultural, and political hothouses for left-wing bohemians. The art and antics of rebellious figures in 1950s American nightlife—from the Beat Generation to eccentric jazz musicians and comedians—have long fascinated fans and scholars alike. In The Rebel Café, Stephen R. Duncan flips the frame, focusing on the New York and San Francisco bars, nightclubs, and coffeehouses from which these cultural icons emerged. Duncan shows that the sexy, smoky sites of bohemian Greenwich Village and North Beach offered not just entertainment but doorways to a new sociopolitical consciousness. This book is a collective biography of the places that harbored beatniks, blabbermouths, hipsters, playboys, and partisans who altered the shape of postwar liberal politics and culture. Touching on literary figures from Norman Mailer and Amiri Baraka to Susan Sontag as well as performers ranging from Dave Brubeck to Maya Angelou to Lenny Bruce, The Rebel Café profiles hot spots such as the Village Vanguard, the hungry i, the Black Cat Cafe, and the White Horse Tavern. Ultimately, the book provides a deeper view of 1950s America, not simply as the black-and-white precursor to the Technicolor flamboyance of the sixties but as a rich period of artistic expression and identity formation that blended cultural production and politics. “What emerges in these pages is nothing less than a comprehensive psycho-social geography of an underground counter-culture of black and white jazz musicians, leftists, poets, artists, beatniks, gays and lesbians and other people of the demi-monde.” —All About Jazz
Download or read book Moe's Cafe written by Mark H. Larson and published by Good Year Books. This book was released on 2006-10 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While driving with your friends or family someplace far from home, your radiator starts steaming. You manage to find a gas station in a small town where they can fix your car, but it's going to take a few hours. You ask the mechanic if there's any place to get something to eat, and he points across the road to Moe's Cafe, a real dump. You don't have much choice, so you head inside and take a seat at the first booth on the left. So begins Moe's Cafe, one of 48 innovative and intriguing prompts for student writing. These classroom-tested prompts put students in a place or in front of a character and ask them to describe what they see. The thinking, writing, and scribbling they do for the prompts inspires them to create their own stories and poems. After writing 90-word mini-stories, students read a short story or watch a film scene to help them expand on their own creative works. A section of longer readings models writing strategies. The lessons and activities reinforce and develop skills defined by the National Council of Teachers of English as appropriate for students in grades 6-12. Good Year.
Book Synopsis Affected Labour in a Café Culture by : Alexia Cameron
Download or read book Affected Labour in a Café Culture written by Alexia Cameron and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to work in the ‘hip’ postmodern economy? This book develops the concept of ‘affected labour’ within Melbourne, Australia. Through the lens of café and bar culture, the book provides an ethnographic investigation into the ways that affect arises, circulates, sticks and dissipates over the course of everyday encounters. The dynamics and atmospheres of affective labour among those working in the hospitality-oriented environments are unfolded. Service work is rooted in the notion that labour is ‘performed’ by an exhausted worker for a demanding customer. This book goes beyond this idea by describing the way not only consumers are moved by the experience and seduced by the atmosphere, but more pressingly workers and employers. This book reveals the ways in which workers themselves are capitalised on by being affected pleasurably in the moment, fuelling an economy of short-term desires in which ‘affected labourers’ are manipulated.
Book Synopsis The Genesis Café by : Robby McAlpine
Download or read book The Genesis Café written by Robby McAlpine and published by Robby McAlpine. This book was released on 2024-02-15 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What did Jesus mean when he said, “the Kingdom is near?” The Younger and Elder, together with author Robby McAlpine, set out to explore what Kingdom Come meant to Jesus and his first disciples. Drawing on the four Gospels and the book of Acts, as well the writings of George Eldon Ladd, their animated conversations—and run-ins with the crusty Irish Barkeep, the shrewd but wary Proprietress, and the Genesis Café’s irrepressibly artistic Barista—make for a thought-provoking and spiritually invigorating journey of discovery. Join us at the Genesis Café for lattes, laughter, and Kingdom conversations. A warm welcome awaits you. “The characters’ conversations are understandable, entertaining, and full of witty discipleship examples. The Genesis Café is, quite frankly, a work of art. Few books can unpack such deep theological concepts in such readable and practical ways.” ~ Luke Geraty (Lead Pastor, Red Bluff Vineyard, CA)
