Agler guides students through the basics of symbolic logic by explaining the essentials of two classical systems, propositional and predicate logic. Students will learn translation both from formal language into English and from English into formal language; how to use truth trees and truth tables to test propositions for logical properties; and how to construct and strategically use derivation rules in proofs. Book Synopsis Experience-Based Language Acquisition by : Brian E. Pangburn
Download or read book Experience-Based Language Acquisition written by Brian E. Pangburn and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2002-12 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost from the very beginning of the digital age, people have sought better ways to communicate with computers. This research investigates how computers might be enabled to understand natural language in a more humanlike way. Based, in part, on cognitive development in infants, we introduce an open computational framework for visual perception and grounded language acquisition called Experience-Based Language Acquisition (EBLA). EBLA can watch a series of short videos and acquire a simple language of nouns and verbs corresponding to the objects and object-object relations in those videos. Upon acquiring this protolanguage, EBLA can perform basic scene analysis to generate descriptions of novel videos. The general architecture of EBLA is comprised of three stages: vision processing, entity extraction, and lexical resolution. In the vision processing stage, EBLA processes the individual frames in short videos, using a variation of the mean shift analysis image segmentation algorithm to identify and store information about significant objects. In the entity extraction stage, EBLA abstracts information about the significant objects in each video and the relationships among those objects into internal representations called entities. Finally, in the lexical acquisition stage, EBLA extracts the individual lexemes (words) from simple descriptions of each video and attempts to generate entity-lexeme mappings using an inference technique called cross-situational learning. EBLA is not primed with a base lexicon, so it faces the task of bootstrapping its lexicon from scratch.
Book Synopsis Action and Language Integration in Cognitive Systems by : Angelo Cangelosi
Download or read book Action and Language Integration in Cognitive Systems written by Angelo Cangelosi and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2012-07-12 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent theoretical and experimental research on action and language processing in humans and animals clearly demonstrates the strict interaction and co-dependence between language and action. This has been demonstrated in neuroscientific investigations (e.g. Cappa&Perani, 2003; Pulvermuller 2003; Rizzolatti&Arbib, 1998), psychology experiments (e.g. Glenberg&Kaschak, 2002; Pecher&Zwaan 2005), evolutionary psychology (e.g. Corballis 2002) and computational modelling (e.g. Cangelosi&Parisi 2004; Massera et al. 2008). All these studies have important implication both for the understanding of the action basis of cognition in natural and artificial cognitive systems, as well as for the design of cognitive and communicative capabilities in robots (Cangelosi et al. 2005). The journal “Frontiers in Neurorobotics” is seeking submissions of new articles in the topic of action and language integration both in natural cognitive systems (e.g. humans and animals) and in artificial cognitive agents (robots and simulated agents). Manuscripts can regard new theoretical and computational investigations, as well as new neuroscientific and psychological investigations. Review articles in this topic are also welcome.

Book Synopsis Computational Approaches to Language Acquisition by : Michael R. Brent
Download or read book Computational Approaches to Language Acquisition written by Michael R. Brent and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past fifteen years have seen great changes in the field of language acquisition. New experimental methods have yielded insights into the linguistic knowledge of ever younger children, and interest has grown in the phonological, syntactic, and semantic aspects of the lexicon. Computational investigations of language acquisition have also changed, reflecting, among other things, the profound shift in the field of natural language processing from hand-crafted grammars to grammars that are learned automatically from samples of naturally occurring language. Each of the four research papers in this book takes a novel formal approach to a particular problem in language acquisition. In the first paper, J. M. Siskind looks at developmentally inspired models of word learning. In the second, M. R. Brent and T. A. Cartwright look at how children could discover the sounds of words, given that word boundaries are not marked by any acoustic analog of the spaces between written words. In the third, P. Resnik measures the association between verbs and the semantic categories of their arguments that children likely use as clues to verb meanings. Finally, P. Niyogi and R. C. Berwick address the setting of syntactic parameters such as headedness--for example, whether the direct object comes before or after the verb.
