Book Synopsis Woodland Stories for Our Grandchildren by : Judy Henry
Download or read book Woodland Stories for Our Grandchildren written by Judy Henry and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-07 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This childrens book is a compilation of seven stories. The central characters in my book are just some of the adorable and unusual animals and birds seen during my childhood. Not far from our home, on the crest of the riverbank rose a huge leafless gum tree, long since dead. It was home to much birdlife and especially the very noisy cockatoos and galahs. As children we roamed all over our property with complete safety where we discovered an abundance of wildlife in their natural habitat. I started writing about Pete the Pesky Possum only a few years ago and from then on it just mushroomed. When I wrote about one character, another popped up, and I have many more just waiting for me to bring them to life. The only problems I encountered were to know when to stop.

Book Synopsis Stories from Out of the Woods by : George Karras
Download or read book Stories from Out of the Woods written by George Karras and published by . This book was released on 2018-12-10 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Stories from Out of the Woods: 21 Woodland Tales for Children" is a unique and timeless collection of 21 new and never before published and beautifully illustrated children's stories. These stories portray woodland animals in many diverse situations, where they must learn how to cope with what life hands them and with each other. The animals in this book find themselves having to deal with life in ways that are sometimes humorous, yet trying and difficult, as they learn to treat each other with respect and understanding. In one story a sleepy bear lies down under a walnut tree to take a nap. He looks over at a nearby field of watermelons and wonders why watermelons do not grow on trees. He falls asleep only to be awakened by a walnut that fell off of the tree he is sleeping under, hitting him in the nose, and realizes what would have happened if it was a watermelon instead of just a walnut. In another story two pig brothers break open their people banks, take the money out and run to the candy store to spend it all on candy. What happens afterwards teaches them both quite a different lesson. These charming stories can be read to children as bedtime stories or at any time, and may also be read by children themselves as an aid in helping them to learn to read. The many wonderful stories in this book of 21 woodland tales brings to mind children's classics such as those written by Beatrix Potter and Hans Christian Andersen. Your child will find these stories delightful as well as thought provoking on many different levels. All of the stories in this book were written over a period of years by well known Chicago artist Karena Karras and her husband George Karras, and illustrated by Karena Karras.

Book Synopsis The Truth about Stories by : Thomas King
Download or read book The Truth about Stories written by Thomas King and published by House of Anansi. This book was released on 2003 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2003 Trillium Book Award "Stories are wondrous things," award-winning author and scholar Thomas King declares in his 2003 CBC Massey Lectures. "And they are dangerous." Beginning with a traditional Native oral story, King weaves his way through literature and history, religion and politics, popular culture and social protest, gracefully elucidating North America's relationship with its Native peoples. Native culture has deep ties to storytelling, and yet no other North American culture has been the subject of more erroneous stories. The Indian of fact, as King says, bears little resemblance to the literary Indian, the dying Indian, the construct so powerfully and often destructively projected by White North America. With keen perception and wit, King illustrates that stories are the key to, and only hope for, human understanding. He compels us to listen well.
