Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wonderland, 1901 The first authentic and definite information, in detail, relative to the Monad came from Rev. W. S. Holt, D. D., of Portland, Ore. Mr. Holt had been, for twelve years, a Presbyterian missionary in China, and was familiar with the symbol and its meaning there. As he was walking along the. Street he noticed the trade-mark painted upon the windows of the office of the company. It struck him as peculiar, and entering the office he made some inquiries, and then, in conversation with Mr. A. D. Charlton, Assistant General Passenger Agent, informed him of the general character and meaning of the design. Through Mr. Holt's efforts much additional information of value was secured, and now that a start was made in the right direc tion, investigation was also successfully pushed through other channels. At first sight the figure appears to be rather an involved one. An analysis of it soon corrects this impression. It is really quite simple. On the vertical diameter of a circle, inscribe on opposite sides of this diameter and one above and one below the center thereof, semi-circles having diameters of one-half the larger diameter, or the radius of the large circle, and the symbol is outlined. Book excerpt: Complete digitally restored reprint of the original edition of 1901 with excellent resolution and outstanding readability. With an introduction by E. S. Martin, illustrated with 41 pictures by Peter Newell. Every story text page has an ornament frame. Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (born January 27, 1832, died January 14, 1898), better known by his pen name, Lewis Carroll. He was an English writer, mathematician, logician, Anglican deacon and photographer. His most famous writings are Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, its sequel Through the Looking-Glass, which includes the poem Jabberwocky, and the poem The Hunting of the Snark, all examples of the genre of literary nonsense. He is noted for his facility at word play, logic, and fantasy. It was on one expedition, on 4 July 1862, that Dodgson invented the outline of the story that eventually became his first and greatest commercial success. Having told the story and been begged by Alice Liddell to write it down, Dodgson eventually (after much delay) presented her with a handwritten, illustrated manuscript entitled Alice's Adventures Under Ground in November 1864. Peter Sheaf Hersey Newell (born March 5, 1862, died January 15, 1924). He was an American artist and author.

Book excerpt: People spent the twentieth century obsessed with the future. We created technologies that would help connect us faster, gather news, map the planet, and compile knowledge. We strove for an instantaneous network where time and space could be compressed. Well, the future's arrived. We live in a continuous now enabled by Twitter, email, and a so-called real-time technological shift. Yet this "now" is an elusive goal that we can never quite reach. And the dissonance between our digital selves and our analog bodies has thrown us into a new state of anxiety: present shock.

Book excerpt: "ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND (commonly shortened to Alice in Wonderland) is an 1865 novel written by English author Charles Lutwidge Dodgson under the pseudonym Lewis Carroll. It tells of a girl named Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated by peculiar, anthropomorphic creatures. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting popularity with adults as well as with children. It is considered to be one of the best examples of the literary nonsense genre. Its narrative course and structure, characters and imagery have been enormously influential in both popular culture and literature, especially in the fantasy genre.Dodgson's tale was published in 1865 as Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by ""Lewis Carroll"" with illustrations by John Tenniel. The first print run of 2,000 was held back because Tenniel objected to the print quality. A new edition was quickly printed, released in December of the same year but carrying an 1866 date. The entire print run sold out quickly. Alice was a publishing sensation, beloved by children and adults alike. Among its first avid readers were Queen Victoria and the young Oscar Wilde. The book has never been out of print. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland has been translated into at least 174 languages. There have now been over a hundred English-language editions of the book, as well as countless adaptations in other media, especially theatre and film."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lewis Carroll spells magic! The celebrated author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and Through the Looking Glass (1872), Charles Lutwidge Dodgson used the pen name Lewis Carroll to weave fanciful stories and poems for an appreciative world audience of children and adults. An English clergyman and mathematician, Dodgson's genius is illustrated by his creation of his pseudonym. He rendered his first two names into Latin and then anglicized them into Lewis Carroll. The first of his parents' 11 children, Carroll quickly became the family entertainer, as magician, puppeteer, and poet. Now in one volume are Carroll's most acclaimed works: The Hunting of the Snark, Tangled Tales, Phantasmagoria, Nonsense from Letters, and certainly, the adventures of Alice. Included, too, are facsimiles of the memorable original illustrations for the Alice books by the eminent English Artist, Sir John Tenniel. Tenniel's drawings won instant renown for their perfect integration with the text. Other illustrations in this richly satisfying collection are by the well known artist, Henry Holiday. This hardcover edition of Best of Lewis Carroll includes over five full Carroll stories and makes a lovely collector's volume for lifelong fans or new readers of Carroll. The acclaimed author was an Oxford scholar, a Church of England Deacon and an academic author and lecturer, and his gift with the English language is apparent in the famous works contained in this collection. This book will become a treasure in your own library. Lewis Carroll spells magic! Young and old will fall under his spell.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This gorgeous 150th anniversary edition of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland is also a revelatory work of scholarship. Alice's Adventures in Wonderland--published 150 years ago in 1865--is a book many of us love and feel we know well. But it turns out we have only scratched the surface. Scholar David Day has spent many years down the rabbit hole of this children's classic and has emerged with a revelatory new view of its contents. What we have here, he brilliantly and persuasively argues, is a complete classical education in coded form--Carroll's gift to his "wonder child" Alice Liddell. In two continuous commentaries, woven around the complete text of the novel for ease of cross-reference on every page, David Day reveals the many layers of teaching, concealed by manipulation of language, that are carried so lightly in the beguiling form of a fairy tale. These layers relate directly to Carroll's interest in philosophy, history, mathematics, classics, poetry, spiritualism and even to his love of music--both sacred and profane. His novel is a memory palace, given to Alice as the great gift of an education. It was delivered in coded form because in that age, it was a gift no girl would be permitted to receive in any other way. Day also shows how a large number of the characters in the book are based on real Victorians. Wonderland, he shows, is a veritable "Who's Who" of Oxford at the height of its power and influence in the Victorian Age. There is so much to be found behind the imaginary characters and creatures that inhabit the pages of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. David Day's warm, witty and brilliantly insightful guide--beautifully designed and stunningly illustrated throughout in full colour--will make you marvel at the book as never before.

Book excerpt: With several million copies sold in the last fifty years, My Secret Life, first published by Grove Press in the 1960s, is one of the most famous pornographic works in literary history. What readers of this long-banned and troubling book of violent sexual fantasies failed to realize is that it is also the confession of history’s most fiendish killer. Written during the era of Jack the Ripper, it’s narrated by “Walter,” the pseudonym of textile millionaire Henry Spencer Ashbee. Walter was a voyeur and rapist obsessed with prostitutes, and his writing revealed his darkest sexual secrets. He died in 1901, long before his book would be widely read. Only now have researchers finally come to the conclusion that “Walter” and Jack the Ripper were, in fact, one and the same. Jack the Ripper’s Secret Confession puts all the pieces together, and its new theory will amaze and titillate scholars who for generations have pondered the true identity of history’s most brutal murderer.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1869 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VII. A MAD TEA-PARTY. There was a table set out under a tree in front of the house, and the March Hare and the Hatter were having tea at it: a Dormouse was sitting between them, fast asleep, and the other two were using it as a cushion, resting their elbows on it, and talking over its head. "Very uncomfortable for the Dormouse," thought Alice; "only, as it's asleep, I suppose it doesn't mind." The table was a large one, but the three were all crowded together at one corner of it: "No room! No room!" they cried out when they saw Alice coming. "There's plenty of room!" said Alice indignantly, and she sat down in a large arm-chair at one end of the table. "Have some wine," the March Hare said in an encouraging tone. Alice looked all round the table, but there was nothing on it but tea. "I don't see any wine," she remarked. "There isn't any," said the March Hare. M Then it wasn't very eivil of you to offer it," said Alice angrily. "It wasn't very civil of you to sit down without being invited," said the March Hare. "I didn't know it was your table," said Alice; "it's laid for a great many more than three." "Your hair wants cutting," said the Hatter. He had been looking at Alice for some time with great curiosity, and this was his first speech. "You should learn not to make personal remarks," Alice said with some severity: "it's very rude." The Hatter opened his eyes very wide on heaving this; but all he said was, "Why is a raven like a writing-desk?" "Come, we shall have some fun now!" thought Alice. "I'm glad they've begun asking riddles -- I believe I can guess that," she added aloud. "Do you mean that you think you can find out the answer to it?" said the March Hare. "Exactly so," said Alice. "Then you should say what you mean, ..".
