Book excerpt: A classic collection of articles, book reviews, and travel essays from “the best food writer of her time” (Jane Grigson, The Times Literary Supplement). An Omelette and a Glass of Wine offers sixty-two articles originally written by Elizabeth David between 1955 and 1984 for numerous publications including the Spectator, Gourmet magazine, Vogue, and the Sunday Times. This revered classic volume contains delightful explorations of food and cooking, among which are the collection’s namesake essay and other such gems as “Syllabubs and Fruit Fools,” “Sweet Vegetables, Soft Wines,” “Pleasing Cheeses,” and “Whisky in the Kitchen.” Elizabeth David’s subjects range from the story of how her own cooking writing began to accounts of restaurants in provincial France, of white truffles in Piedmont, wild risottos on the islands of the Venetian lagoon, and odd happenings during rain-drenched seaside holidays in the British Isles. Here we can share her appreciation of books, people who influenced her, places she loved, and the delicious meals she enjoyed. Casually interspersed with charming black-and-white illustrations and some photographs, An Omelette and a Glass of Wine is sure to appeal to the ‘Elizabeth David’ book collector and readers coming to know Ms. David for the first time, who will marvel at her wisdom and grace. “Savor her book in a comfortable chair, with a glass of sherry.” —Bon Appétit “Elizabeth David has the intelligence, subtlety, sensuality, courage and creative force of the true artist.” —Wine and Food
Book Synopsis Archaeology of the Night by : Nancy Gonlin
Download or read book Archaeology of the Night written by Nancy Gonlin and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did ancient peoples experience, view, and portray the night? What was it like to live in the past when total nocturnal darkness was the norm? Archaeology of the Night explores the archaeology, anthropology, mythology, iconography, and epigraphy of nocturnal practices and questions the dominant models of daily ancient life. A diverse team of experienced scholars uses a variety of methods and resources to reconstruct how ancient peoples navigated the night and what their associated daily—and nightly—practices were. This collection challenges modern ideas and misconceptions regarding the night and what darkness and night symbolized in the ancient world, and it highlights the inherent research bias in favor of “daytime” archaeology. Numerous case studies from around the world (including Oman, Mesoamerica, Scandinavia, Rome, Great Zimbabwe, Indus Valley, Peru, and Cahokia) illuminate subversive, social, ritual, domestic, and work activities, such as witchcraft, ceremonies, feasting, sleeping, nocturnal agriculture, and much more. Were there artifacts particularly associated with the night? Authors investigate individuals and groups (both real and mythological) who share a special connection to nighttime life. Reconsidering the archaeological record, Archaeology of the Night views sites, artifacts, features, and cultures from a unique perspective. This book is relevant to anthropologists and archaeologists and also to scholars of human geography, history, astronomy, sensory studies, human biology, folklore, and mythology. Book Synopsis Rambles in Normandy by : Milburg F Mansfield
Download or read book Rambles in Normandy written by Milburg F Mansfield and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-02-07 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “ONE doubles his span of life,” says George Moore, “by knowing well a country not his own.” is a good friend, indeed, to whom one may turn in time of strife, and none other than Normandy—unless it be Brittany—has proved itself a more safe and pleasant land for travellers. When one knows the country well he recognizes many things which it has in common with England. Its architecture, for one thing, bears a marked resemblance; for the Norman builders, who erected the magnificent ecclesiastical edifices in the Seine valley during the middle ages, were in no small way responsible for many similar works in England. It is possible to carry the likeness still further, but the author is not rash enough to do so. The above is doubtless sufficient to awaken any spirit of contention which might otherwise be latent. Some one has said that the genuine traveller must be a vagabond; and so he must, at least to the extent of taking things as he finds them. He may have other qualities which will endear him to the people with whom he comes in contact; he may be an artist, an antiquarian, or a mere singer of songs;—even if he be merely inquisitive, the typical Norman peasant makes no objection. One comes to know Normandy best through the real gateway of the Seine, though not many distinguish between Lower Normandy and Upper Normandy. Indeed, not every one knows where Normandy leaves off and Brittany begins, or realizes even the confines of the ancient royal domain of the kings of France.
