A qualitative methodology and semi-structured interviews provided detail and a rich understanding of women’s occupational choices, pursuits, and roles as told from their own perspectives. The results revealed that while working in water promoted a sense of pride, accomplishment, and empowerment, women continued to fight for equal access and full participation in lucrative water treatment careers. Key issues the women indicated were lack of knowledge of the industry, the necessity of mentorship, access to technical information, and the male-centered environment of water operations.

Book excerpt: Poor potable water quality and quantity mark everyday life in Mexico City, but it affects some city inhabitants, specifically low-income women, more than others. In order to improve women's water experiences in Mexico City, their needs and perspectives should be accounted for in water management policies, programs, and projects. In order for this to happen though, the elite men and women that design and implement these water management initiatives must realize how non-elite women experience water shortage and contamination differently from men and wealthy women. To gain an understanding of how current water experts such as government officials, academics, and NGO leaders view women's relationship with water, I conducted 35 interviews with Mexico City water experts on the topic. In this paper, I analyze the interviews using discourse analysis in order to identify shared themes and subthemes that indicate water experts' beliefs about women's relationship with water. I conclude with several recommendations for how water experts could better address non-elite women's water needs by approaching water decision-making through a gender lens supported by principles of intersectionality and equity.
