Victor Delgado beat the alien ship to Earth, but just barely. Not soon enough to convince skeptical governments that there was a threat. They didn't believe that until space stations and ships and colonies went up in sudden flame. Book excerpt: This discounted ebundle includes The First Formic War Trilogy by bestselling authors Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston: Earth Unaware, Earth Afire, Earth Awakens One hundred years before Ender Wiggin decisively defeated the alien formics in Ender’s Game. A pulse-pounding tale of first contact gone horribly wrong. Ender’s Game opens in the last desperate days of Earth’s war against the implacable insectoid aliens. We are told early on that the Battle School is training generals for the Third Formic War — the war that will end the war; will save the Earth; will finally defeat the Buggers. This is the story of the First Formic Wars, back when humans thought they were alone in the galaxy. Humanity was slowly making their way out from Earth to the planets and asteroids of the Solar System, exploring and mining and founding colonies. Then a ship’s telescopes pick up a fast-moving object coming in-system... Earth Unaware — When mining ship El Cavador's telescopes pick up a fast-moving object coming in-system, it's hard to know what to make of it. It's massive and moving at a significant fraction of the speed of light. But the ship has other problems. Their systems are old and failing. Worrying about a distant object that might or might not be an alien ship seems...not important. Earth Afire — Victor Delgado beat the alien ship to Earth, but not soon enough to convince skeptical governments that there was a threat. That is, until space stations and ships and colonies went up in sudden flame. And when that happened, only Mazer Rackham and the Mobile Operations Police could organize in time to meet the threat. Earth Awakens — Politics slowed the response on Earth, and on Luna, corporate power struggles seemed more urgent than distant deaths. It's up to Mazer Rackham's squad in China, who have developed a method to destroy the alien landers one by one; and Lem Jukes and his crew on the Moon, who may have the key to destroying the Formic mother ship in orbit. Download or read book L’Maudit Mystique written by Steve Hinton and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2014-10-31 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spanning nine generations, the L’Maudit family has gone to whatever extremes necessary in order to continue their bloodline. In 1774, while the family’s earliest ancestors were struggling to establish themselves in rural south Louisiana, they seriously mistreated a young Haitian woman, who then voodoo-cursed the family, intending for their name to die out. Beginning then and continuing through time, the family offset their extinction by using several well-learned occult practices along with their cunning. Now the family’s continued existence is dependent upon Marcelle, the family’s last daughter of childbearing age, who is a well-educated, street-smart, successful businesswoman. At a critical time in Marcelle’s life, while struggling with her responsibilities of continuing the L’Maudit lineage and operating her family’s guarded grave-robbing business, she finds herself the target of a relentless stalker. Unknown to Ms. L’Maudit, a villainous association is suspicious of her extraordinary supernatural capabilities and is determined to make her work for them. As if Marcelle’s life isn’t complicated and dangerous enough, now she must determine whether the charismatic Daniel Stevens, who injects himself into her world, is friend or foe. In a statewide game of deadly cat and mouse, stretching from New Orleans’s French Quarter through the historic and haunted Lafayette Cemetery to the L’Maudit ancestral homestead deep within the Atchafalaya swamplands, Marcelle is put to the ultimate test to protect her family.

Book Synopsis Portraiture and Friendship in Enlightenment France by : Jessica L. Fripp
Download or read book Portraiture and Friendship in Enlightenment France written by Jessica L. Fripp and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2021-02-05 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portraiture and Friendship in Enlightenment France examines how new and often contradictory ideas about friendship were enacted in the lives of artists in the eighteenth century. It demonstrates that portraits resulted from and generated new ideas about friendship by analyzing the creation, exchange, and display of portraits alongside discussions of friendship in philosophical and academic discourse, exhibition criticism, personal diaries, and correspondence. This study provides a deeper understanding of how artists took advantage of changing conceptions of social relationships and used portraiture to make visible new ideas about friendship that were driven by Enlightenment thought. Book Synopsis The Greek Film Musical by : Lydia Papadimitriou
Download or read book The Greek Film Musical written by Lydia Papadimitriou and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-04-22 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greek film musical was the most popular film genre in Greece in the 1960s. The songs became instant hits, the dances were performed at parties, and the fashions were imitated by people of all ages. Challenging assumptions that the Greek film musical was a culturally lacking imitation of Hollywood, this work examines the genre as a cinematic and historical phenomenon that condensed key social and cultural concerns of its time, and contributed to the development of a national popular culture in the light of the rapid Americanization of postwar Greece. During two decades characterized by affluence and upward mobility in Greek society, the musical expressed and reinforced the optimism of the times while capturing the tensions and contradictions that emerged as a result of rapid social changes. Beginning with an introduction to modern Greece and cultural identity, the book locates the genre in its historical context and argues that it consists of different layers of cultural appropriation and transformation that redefine traditionally fixed notions of identity. Old Greek cinema is examined, the Greek musical is defined, and a number of key films are analyzed with particular emphasis on the style and structure of the musical numbers. The work concludes with a filmography of Greek musicals; lists of the annual outputs of the production companies Finos Films, Karagiannis-Karatzopoulos, Klak Films, and Damaskinos Michailidis; a glossary; and bibliographies in English, Greek, and French.
