Book excerpt: How far is there a ‘feminine’ style of managerial and professional work? Have employers taken account of the different timetable governing the life of a woman as compared to that of a man, and the implications of this if women are to have the training, promotion and job security needed to reach the top? This book, first published in 1971, considers women as company directors; examines the position of women managers in two large firms; analyses how they fare in senior posts in the BBC and in the Civil Service. The four studies together contain a mass of information on women’s education and the reasons why they reach the top – or fail to get there.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1981, this book is composed of papers that describe and analyse women’s careers in government, business, and the professions. It examines women’s access to and participation in elite careers in the US, and in selected countries of western and eastern Europe – Britain, France, West Germany, Austria, Norway, Finland, Poland, and Yugoslavia – as well as in international organizations. This book was an outgrowth of a conference on ‘Women in decision-making elites in cross-national perspective,’ held at King’s College, Cambridge University, in July 1976. The countries represented were chosen because, although they were at similar stages of economic development, they exhibited differences in political structure, ideology, and tradition.
Book Synopsis Sex, Career and Family by : Michael P. Fogarty
Download or read book Sex, Career and Family written by Michael P. Fogarty and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, first published in 1971, the authors show from first-hand studies of family and working life (and with evidence from many countries, including the socialist societies of Eastern Europe) the nature of the discrimination facing women in the professions – and how various family and employment patterns might contribute to solving it. Their point is not that some new stereotype should be substituted for traditional views of the role of husbands and wives: different patterns fit different situations.

Book Synopsis Behind the Wireless by : Kate Murphy
Download or read book Behind the Wireless written by Kate Murphy and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-28 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Behind the Wireless tells the story of women at the BBC in the 1920s and 30s. Broadcasting was brand new in Britain and the BBC developed without many of the overt discriminatory practices commonplace at the time. Women were employed at all levels, except the very top, for instance as secretaries, documentary makers, advertising representatives, and librarians. Three women held Director level posts, Hilda Matheson (Director of Talks), Mary Somerville (Director of School Broadcasting), and Isa Benzie (Foreign Director). Women also produced the programmes aimed at female listeners and brought women broadcasters to the microphone. There was an ethos of equality and the chance to rise through the ranks from accounts clerk to accompanist. But lurking behind the façade of modernity were hidden inequalities in recruitment, pay, and promotion and in 1932 a marriage bar was introduced. Kate Murphy examines how and why the interwar BBC created new opportunities for women.
