Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can women succeed? Is women's work appreciated equally to men's? Do women's salaries reflect the quality and quantity of work they do? Does gender make a difference? These questions, which often emerge even in democratic societies and free-market economies, are much more acute in the new democracies of Central and Eastern Europe. Gender has been an issue thus far neglected in transition economies. Drawing on official statistics, an international multidisciplinary team of sociologists, economists, demographers and geographers examines how women have been affected by the labor market reforms in Poland in the transition period of the 1990s. The issues discussed include occupational segregation, the social mobility of women, demographic change, the power and participation of women in public life, women's organizations, and labor market reform.

Book excerpt: Two decades have passed since the beginning of Central East European (CEE) countries' transition from socialism and half a decade since they joined the European Union (EU). Focusing on Poland, this book engages in a gender analysis of the impact of these two exogenous events on labour market policies. Women's employment is high on the agendas of governments, as demographic change, competitiveness concerns, and demands for equal opportunities provide key stimuli for policy makers. However, the Polish case represents a paradox: the entrenched traditional gender ideology and difficult labour market conditions, particularly for women, conflict with EU trends and requirements of integrating gender equality principles in all policies and laws. The analysis of exogenous pressures is integrated with that of endogenous factors - the domestic institutional and actor configuration - assessing how the contradictory forces influence policies in pre-accession and membership stages. This book is of interest to scholars concerned with gender and women's employment, post-socialist transformation and EU accession, and with CEE welfare state development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the experience of joblessness and unemployment in contemporary Poland. It does so by combining qualitative and quantitative data from a special project conducted in Poland after the Great Recession and the long-term Polish Panel Survey (POLPAN) to describe the lives of the jobless: women and men currently out of work, the recently re-employed, and housewives. The book uses a class and inequality perspective to investigate how these women and men became jobless, how they look for and find employment, their household and social activities, and their political participation. It contextualizes these experiences with a description of Poland’s economy, labor market and employment policies after the fall of Communism and builds on the active interviewing and social constructionist approaches to explore the complex interviewer-respondent relationship.

Book excerpt: Abstract: Faced with high levels of unemployment and discrimination in Poland, Polish women have made up a very large proportion of those leaving the former Communist states of central Europe, to work in EU member states. They have constituted a large undocumented migrant workforce in Europe, usually working as domestic workers and carers in the informal economy. Poland's membership of the EU is starting to regulate Polish women's work abroad and to increase their access to better paid and skilled work in the formal labour market. New market-led immigration policies in Europe are still selective and restricted however. What Polish women really need from the EU is help in securing a new framework of gender equality and equal treatment in Poland that offers hope for an improvement in their rights at home

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The open access book provides a critical account of parenthood in Polish society. It uses a qualitative perspective to show how mothers and fathers engage with parenthood and also function in the labour market. Parenting in contemporary Poland is not only affected by individual preferences and choices, but significantly by the institutional context, in particular the family policy system, as well as socio-cultural norms of how men and women should fulfill parental roles. The author distinguishes between different kinds of work done in connection to parenthood and shows how the existing institutional system reinforces gender and other forms of social inequalities even in a post-communist state like Poland. The author demonstrates that Polish society has different expectations and institutional norms related to work and gender norms compared to those in long-standing democracies in Europe and elsewhere. The book also shows that the experiences of parenthood in Poland are different between men and women, between single and coupled parents, and based on economic and other resources. This book is of interest to social science students and researchers of family studies, parenting, sociology of work, and social structure in post-communist societies.
