Book excerpt: "The richness of Krishna Ahoojapatel's analysis of the connections between women and the economy comes from the diversity of her engagements as a UN policymaker, an academic and an activist. Her analysis is therefore multidimensional. It is not a historical work, but captures four decades of changes in policies, in paradigms and in women's lives. It is rare to see such different strands come together in one person and one book." -Vandana Shiva, Founder/Director, Research Foundation of Science, Technology & Ecology, New Dehli.

Book Synopsis Making the Transition Work for Women in Europe and Central Asia by : Marnia Lazreg
Download or read book Making the Transition Work for Women in Europe and Central Asia written by Marnia Lazreg and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2000 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women in the Europe and Central Asia region complain about loss of employment, sexual harassment, violence, poor enforcement of the law, poor political representation, and poor health care. Many greet these complaints with skepticism or dismissal. Is it economic expedience due to the sheer magnitude of the changes taking place under the transition? Did the Soviet legacy delude observers into believing that there is gender equality in the region? While budgets shrink, how can gender be integrated into country department work programs? To answer these and other pressing questions regarding the gender issue, the World Bank held a conference in June 1999. Women from the ECA region, Western Europe and the United States gathered to address the lack of Bank knowledge of gender issues in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia Region. The papers from the conference included in this volume describe the present conditions for women, emphasize the need to debunk the myth of gender equality in the Soviet era, and propose urgent legislative measures to address gender disparity. This publication gives women the opportunity to voice their concerns regarding this issue. It will be of interest to regional gender experts, ministries, and think tanks.

Download or read book The Way Forward written by Felix Dodds and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-21 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997. 1997 marked the fifth anniversary of the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development - the celebrated ‘Earth Summit’ in Rio de Janeiro which represented the high-water mark of intergovernmental action for sustainable development. Whilst some were tempted to dismiss the Conference as a gesture of concern by the participating governments, the list of resolutions which arose from the Summit is formidable, and the key text to emerge from the conference process, Agenda 21, had proven to be crucial to efforts to disseminate and implement the principles of globally sustainable development. The Way Forward outlines the successes and failures of those first five years. Calling on a list of eminent experts, it provides an unparalleled analysis of the agreements that were reached, and the stakeholders who were charged with implementing them. It reviews the progress that was made at the intergovernmental, national and grassroots levels, and offers a cogent summary of the major issues that needed to be addressed for the future. Lucid, compact and authoritative, this is the essential guide to ‘Rio plus five’.

Book Synopsis Mothers of the Nation by : Patrizia Albanese
Download or read book Mothers of the Nation written by Patrizia Albanese and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Comparing nationalist and non-nationalist polities in order to establish how these governments differ in their treatment of women and families, Albanese concludes that the efforts of most ethno-nationalist regimes to return women to their 'natural' place in the home as housewives and mothers have been largely unsuccessful. Policies to this effect have provoked considerable opposition by women's groups and individual women, have often been reversed by subsequent governments, and have had little long-term demographic impact. Mothers of the Nation makes an important contribution to the literature on feminism, nationalism, and social and economic policy within a comparative political context."--Jacket.

Book Synopsis Women and European Employment by : Colette Fagan
Download or read book Women and European Employment written by Colette Fagan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-04-08 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive and up-to-date study of the contribution of women and men to changing European economic activity patterns covering all fifteen member states. Based on the work of the European Commission's network of experts on women's employment, it draws on both national and European data sources. The book links trends in the structures of employment with new comparative data on the role of systems of welfare provision in order to explore economic activity patterns by gender. Participation patterns of women still vary widely within Europe, so much attention is paid to the institutions - both in the labour market and welfare - which help to explain these variations.
Book Synopsis Reproductive Freedom by : Maja Kirilova Eriksson
Download or read book Reproductive Freedom written by Maja Kirilova Eriksson and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-09-27 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to provide a comprehensive investigation of reproductive freedom in the light of contemporary international law. The author discusses reproductive freedom in the context of feminist legal theory, international human rights and humanitarian law. This holistic approach makes the book unique and enhances its value as a comprehensive resource on the most challenging and contentious issues of our time, i.e., legal abortion, medically assisted reproduction, surrogate motherhood, forced pregnancy during armed conflicts, and many others. The author's aim is to advance current debates about gender equality and reproductive rights, and to deepen the analysis of the legal concepts involved. In surveying the international commitment to women's rights and examining critically the way in which international global and regional human rights bodies and ad hoc international tribunals deal with issues pertaining to reproductive freedom and sexual violence, this volume makes clear to what extent contemporary international law norms may be used as a tool for change, and how they need to be adapted to meet the special needs of girls and women worldwide. Finally, the book explores what improvements are necessary to prevent and protect adolescents, women and men, against violation of their reproductive freedom.
Book Synopsis Globalization, Prostitution and Sex Trafficking by : Elina Penttinen
Download or read book Globalization, Prostitution and Sex Trafficking written by Elina Penttinen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-08-07 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globalization has been traditionally interpreted as a phenomenon that takes place at the macro level and is determined by states and markets. This volume takes a different approach to understanding globalization, showing how through the global sex trade, globalization is embodied and enacted by individuals. Elina Penttinen illustrates how the global sex industry feeds on complex global flows. Drawing on extensive fieldwork on the trafficking of Russian and Baltic female sex workers, she demonstrates how the embodiment and reiteration of globalization on the bodies of gendered individuals are tied to the larger processes of globalization. Appadurai’s framework of landscapes of globalization is developed into a framework of shadow sexscapes in order to show how the global sex industry feeds on complex global flows and in turn operates as a form of shadow globalization. Globalization, Prostitution and Sex Trafficking will be of interest to students and researchers of international relations, globalization and gender studies.
