Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Beyond Inequalities series presents the situation of women and men in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) as a region, and in each member country; and reviews the roles and responsibilities, access to and control over resources, decision-making powers, needs and constraints of women vis-a-vis men. The series is forward looking, based on an assessment that inequalities are now generally acknowledged as an impediment to development and economic growth in most countries and regions of the world. The twelve country profiles document and analyse information along themes drawn from the Critical Areas of Concern identified in the Beijing Platform for Action and derived from what the countries of the region consider to be priorities. Each profile is in three parts: Situation Analysis, Policies and Programmes, and the Way Forward, and each has references, bibliography, appendices, and illustrative tables, figures and boxes.

Book excerpt: This open access handbook, the first of its kind, provides a comprehensive and carefully curated multidisciplinary and genre-spanning view of the state of the field of Critical Menstruation Studies, opening up new directions in research and advocacy. It is animated by the central question: ‘“what new lines of inquiry are possible when we center our attention on menstrual health and politics across the life course?” The chapters—diverse in content, form and perspective—establish Critical Menstruation Studies as a potent lens that reveals, complicates and unpacks inequalities across biological, social, cultural and historical dimensions. This handbook is an unmatched resource for researchers, policy makers, practitioners, and activists new to and already familiar with the field as it rapidly develops and expands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Malawi chapter of this series profiles the status of women in Malawi from 1997 to 2004 and records the extent to which practical and adequate steps are being taken to address gender concerns in all development sectors. It examines how Malawi is fulfilling its commitments under the Beijing framework, the SADC declaration on gender and development and to meet the targets of the Millennium Development Goals adopted in 2000. It considers to what extent the dimension of gender is being mainstreamed into every aspect of human life, examining all contexts within which women operate: social, economic, legal and political. The study is divided into three parts: the first giving background and historical context from a gendered perspective on matters as macro- economic structure, politics and decision-making, laws and legal reform, education and technology, culture, heath, media and corruption. The second part analyses the gendered impact of various policies and programmes introduced in Malawi between 1998 and 2004. The final part presents recommendations on how existing gaps in Malawi can be filled and the gender agenda taken forward.

Book excerpt: This highly sympathetic and deeply personal account of Malawi's experience of colonialism has particular poignancy as it is written from the marginal perspective of a mixed-race child in a race-conscious society. The author also has a keen eye for the Scottish dimension in Malawi's story. Historically revealing, politically provocative, and humanly intriguing, this book will be a rewarding read for anyone seeking a better understanding of the people who made Malawi the country it is today.
