Book excerpt: The women in this book present the results of their fertility before the camera with enthusiasm and in all openness. These are completely 'normal' women, not models, or beautiful bodies specially chosen by the photographer. Single mothers, women with partners (whether married or not), students involved in long-distance relationships, large women, small women, happy and less happy ones -- they all experienced their term of pregnancy in highly individual ways. But they all had one thing in common: with virtually no exception, each was proud of the shape of her rapidly growing abdomen. Ralf Mohr's photographs prove the point: silky, smooth skin over full breasts, the laden belly, the ample bottom -- is this not the epitome of femininity?

Book excerpt: As much of the intense political and social changes in Madagascar revolve around urban youth, who view themselves as avatars of modernity, this book argues that traditional social science offers inadequate theorizations of generational change and its contribution to broader cultural historical processes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before she was baptized or knew anything about Christ, young Nenilava was called by Jesus to preach and exorcise in his name. At the age of twenty, newly married to a Lutheran catechist, she heard Jesus prompting her to intervene in a case of demon possession, and from there her ministry spread like wildfire. She spent the next sixty years of her life traveling around her native Madagascar, proclaiming Jesus’ victory over sin, guilt, and evil, and bringing countless people to faith. In this book, her firsthand account of her early ministry, as told to a Malagasy pastor, appears for the first time in English. Complementing the immediacy of her narrative, former missionary in Madagascar, James B. Vigen, recounts the last thirty years of Nenilava’s life and describes the extraordinary impact of this illiterate peasant woman on African Christianity. Sarah Hinlicky Wilson concludes the book with a far-reaching exploration of demon possession, healing from illness and sin, emergent offices of ministry, and the relevance of Nenilava for Western Christianity.

Book excerpt: This is a theoretical and ethnographic essay on sexuality and the social order using the Bara material as a vehicle for demonstrating important universal features of human social life. In this sense the style of exposition and organization is modeled after some of the famous essays of the Année sociologique on issues such as bodily polarity, secondary burial, and seasonal variations, all of which drew on limited ethnographic material to pursue general features of humanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1990s, the Ankarana region of northern Madagascar has developed a reputation among globe-trotting gemstone traders and tourists as a source of some of the world's most precious natural wonders. Although some might see Ankarana's sapphire and ecotourist trades as being at odds with each other, many local people understand these trades to be fundamentally connected, most obviously in how both serve foreign demand for what Madagascar has to offer the world. Walsh explores the tensions and speculations that have come with the parallel emergence of these two trades with sensitivity and a critical eye, allowing for insights into globalization, inequality, and the appeal of the "natural." Book excerpt: What happens to women whose lives are affected by human rights violations? What happens to their testimony in court or in front of a truth commission? Women face a double marginalization under authoritarian regimes and during and after violent conflicts. Yet reparations programs are rarely designed to address the needs of women victims. What Happened to the Women? Gender and Reparations for Human Rights Violations emphasizes the necessity of a gender dimension in reparations programs to improve their handling of female victims and their families. A joint project of the International Center for Transitional Justice and Canada's International Development Research Centre, What Happened to the Women? includes studies of gender and reparations policies in Guatemala, Peru, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, and Timor-Leste. Contributors represent a wide range of fields related to transitional justice and include international human rights lawyers, members of truth and reconciliation commissions, and NGO representatives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the role that gender plays in natural resource use is crucial for effective conservation efforts. While Madagascar is a priority for international conservation due to its high levels of endemism and unsustainable natural resource use, there is little information on how gender roles affect forest product use. This study uses over seven years of data on gender roles within the extraction, use, and sale of natural forest and marine resources near Madagascar’s largest national park to inform future conservation strategies. We found that gender significantly affects how one uses natural resources in Madagascar. Men were primarily responsible for the collection of natural resources; however, women were responsible for collecting nearly all resources in at least one household. Women purchased more of the natural resources they used, whereas men collected nearly all of their natural resources. More men than women collected resources for income and women primarily collected resources for subsistence. Of the resources they collected, women were significantly more likely to be responsible for the collection of animals than plants, and of aquatic rather than terrestrial resources. Gendered spaces resulted in women collecting most of the resources within rivers, whereas men collected most of the resources in ocean, agricultural, and forested lands. When age is an added factor, we found that while men were more responsible for collecting natural resources than women, boys were almost as likely as adult women to collect a resource, and girls were the least likely within a household to be primarily responsible for resource collection. A locally relevant understanding of how gender roles and needs intersect with natural resource use can help ensure the continued delivery of ecosystem services while protecting Madagascar’s endemic species.
