The first three chapters deal with historical facts and the rest with the present condition of things. Rich as this country is in ancient records, those which pertain to women are very scarce, and it is no light work to make up their history. This is no doubt due, on one hand, to the secret nature Of womanly interference, and on the other, to the delicate modesty Of our women. Book Synopsis The Fragile Wisdom by : Grazyna Jasienska
Download or read book The Fragile Wisdom written by Grazyna Jasienska and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-14 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: So many women who do everything right to stay healthy still wind up with breast cancer, heart disease, or osteoporosis. In The Fragile Wisdom, Grazyna Jasienska provides an evolutionary perspective on the puzzle of why disease prevention among women is so frustratingly difficult. Modern women, she shows, are the unlucky victims of their own bodies’ conflict of interest between reproductive fitness and life-long health. The crux of the problem is that women’s physiology has evolved to facilitate reproduction, not to reduce disease risk. Any trait—no matter how detrimental to health in the post-reproductive period—is more likely to be preserved in the next generation if it increases the chance of giving birth to offspring who will themselves survive to reproductive age. To take just one example, genes that produce high levels of estrogen are a boon to fertility, even as they raise the risk of breast cancer in mothers and their daughters. Jasienska argues that a mismatch between modern lifestyles and the Stone Age physiology that evolution has bequeathed to every woman exacerbates health problems. She looks at women’s mechanisms for coping with genetic inheritance and at the impact of environment on health. Warning against the false hope gene therapy inspires, Jasienska makes a compelling case that our only avenue to a healthy life is prevention programs informed by evolutionary understanding and custom-fitted to each woman’s developmental and reproductive history.

Download or read book Woman's Progress in Japan (Classic Reprint) written by William Elliot Griffis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman's Progress in Japan From all Japanese, of every shade of religious belief or of none, we hear the unanimous verdict Christianity brought a new message to woman. Fifty years ago the gospel of joy began to move the hearts of Japan's daughters. Some of these, now white-haired, are still teachers, and have been makers of Christian homes or are active in Christian churches. The first recognition of female education by the Government of Japan was when a young woman, who had been under the instruction of Mrs. J. C. Hepburn of the Presbyterian Mission, was appointed assistant to Miss Margaret Clark Griffis, in the first school opened under government auspices in the castle in Tokyo. To this school with its sixty pupils, daughters of the nobility and gentry, the Empress paid repeated visits. In the book, Who's Who in Japan, for 1912, we find an astonishing record of graduates of this first school. Many are wives or widows of eminent men, leaders of the nation, while other private data reveal a remarkable line of teachers and' influential women, not a few of whom are Christians.
