Asks one of Galsworthy's characters in The Free lands. SO at times prejudices do seem so in grained that words are futile, especially when one tries to present so colossal a cause as justice to women. But, after all, there is a faith within those Of us who believe in a better order, which keeps alive the hope that the many minds making up pub lic opinion may eventually become harmonized and that the ballot will be granted women. In the hope of playing some part toward bringing about this order, this volume is written. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt: ...to which they were formerly indifferent. It is beginning to dawn upon the consciousness of every woman that her little world is part of the world at large, and that the solution of her problems lies in the solution of community problems. She is beginning to realize that the price of her dinner is voted up and down at election time; that safety of the lives of her children from disease is now a political matter; that the moral conditions surrounding her boy and her girl, when they step from the home into the outer world, are matters controlled by the ballot. How can anyone imagine that she would be willing to remain peacefully at home, unmindful of her duty toward her children? Can anyone imagine that, with the education and awakening of the modern woman, she would go along without interest in community affairs, even if she has no children to be cared for? She has been taught to read and write, the natural result of which is to think; therefore, it is logical that she should demand the most simple and direct method of having her voice count in the solution of these problems. It is idle to say to the average woman of today, " Your place" is within the four walls of your house." It may be admitted that woman's sphere could be thus defined in the days when everything was made at home, and the housewife held control of all the forces affecting her dominion; but with the changed economic conditions the home also has changed, and for her own protection she too must have a voice and a hand in determining the problems which so decidedly affect the welfare of those she holds most dear. We are reminded by those opposing suffrage that there are still problems of the hearthstone to be solved; that when the domestic-servant problem is solved, and not...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern and the Municipal Franchise for Women We are accustomed to say, even in regard tofederal affairs, that a sense of national stability is of even more fundamental 1mportance than national defense. We add to that, and this applies to the city government as well, that any thing which. Diminishes the elector's love of country or interest in its preservation is a menace to the nation; and in the past great stress has been laid upon ownership and that sense of responsibility which property entails. But in the modern city the renters outnumber the landlords a thousand fold, and the ownership of the home becomes less frequent as we leave the farm and the village and proceed to the great centers. As the modern city dweller looks about for other forms of investment as a substitute for real estate, so we must appeal to those interests which are more general, more primordial, and much more trustworthy, in our effort to substitute in the modern city the sense of stability for the spirit of defense. If one could connect these'old maternal anxieties, which are really the basis of family and tribal life, with the'candidates who are seeking offices, it would never 'be necessary to scold cit-her men or women for remaining at home on election day. The arguments in favour of extending the franchise in any given direction being perfectly familiar to all who have con sidered the political aspect of public affairs, it has not been thought necessary to dwell upon them in connection with the present demand of duly qualified women to partici pate in the election of the representatives of the people. For, briefly, all the reasons that have in the past been advanced in favour of extending the franchise to men. Book excerpt: The massive size of the original six-volume History of Woman Suffrage has likely limited its impact on the lives of the women who benefitted from the efforts of the pioneering suffragists. By collecting miscellanies like state suffrage reports and speeches of every sort without interpretation or restraint, the set was often neglected as impenetrable. In their Concise History of Woman Suffrage, Mari Jo Buhle and Paul Buhle have revitalized this classic text by carefully selecting from among its best material. The eighty-two chosen documents, now including interpretative introductory material by the editors, give researchers easy access to material that the original work's arrangement often caused readers to ignore or to overlook. The volume contains the work of many reform agitators, among them Angelina Grimké, Lucy Stone, Carrie Chapman Catt, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Anna Howard Shaw, Jane Addams, Sojourner Truth, and Victoria Woodhull, as well as Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony, Matilda Joslyn Gage, and Ida Husted Harper.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Woman Suffrage in Practice, 1913 AT the Sixth Convention of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance, held in Stockholm, in June, 1911, it was decided to publish a book to show that Woman Suffrage had ceased to be a mere academic question; that already in many countries women have had conferred on them franchise and eligibility rights in the election of local councils and also of legislative bodies that contrary to the prophecies of the anti-suffragist, women make use of their citizen rights; that no dire consequences follow, women do not become unsexed, nor are their homes neglected; that the consensus of opinion in the countries where women do exercise these rights is that the extension of the vote to women has been beneficial, not only to the country but to the women themselves; that legislation especially concerning women is more easily placed on the statute books of the fully enfranchised countries and that Opposition to the movement is dead. This is the book. It sets forth hard facts as they are to-day and the reader can see for himself how little based on reality are the speculations of the anti-suffragist. The book is intended to bring home to Members of Parliament and others in the different countries the growth and universality of the movement. It is hoped that each Auxiliary will help to distribute it as widely as possible, so that its contribution to the proof that success is inevitable may do something towards advancing the cause in every country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the feminist movement, we're currently living in an "oppressive patriarchy" which keeps women down and benefits men. What if this story that we've been told repeatedly over the past 50 years isn't true? What if, instead of being oppressed, women are actually part of a privileged class and have been for centuries? In this book, you'll find many current and historical examples. You'll read about the suffragettes who attempted to burn down the theatre at Dublin and were sentenced to the "hard labour" of... knitting, and the lady who walked after she murdered her husband and child by setting them on fire, then gained the mercy of the court with the claim that she was "a childless widow, all alone in the world"! Now, for the first time ever, you can read about the struggle for gender equality as never before... not only from the man's point of view, but also in 100%%%% phonetic English.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Woman's World, 1889 Now if we apply this principle to the position of women with regard to the representative institutions of this country, I think we may say that the labours of the friends of light, from John Stuart Mill downwards, during the last twenty years have succeeded in proving that the exclusion of all women, except one, from direct political power is an anomaly; it is felt by the great body of quiet reasonable people throughout the country to be absurd, and its long continuance becomes therefore impossible. Some of the more glaring features of this anomaly and absurdity may be pointed out. Some years ago, before the two great extensions of the suffrage in 1867 and 1884, the possession of the Parliamentary franchise was a privilege entrusted to a selected few. The ex elusion of women at that time might have been either expedient or inexpedient, just or unjust, but it was not in anomaly, it was not absurd. Certain classes of persons were selected for this privilege, and to them it was confided in trust, as it were, for the rest of the community. The women who were excluded were not selected for a special disability of sex, but were associated in their exclusion with large bodies of their countrymen, to whom no exception on the ground of character and capacity could be taken. Now, however, the basis of the Constitution has been changed. The franchise is no longer a privilege granted to the selected few on the grounds of personal fitness, or, at any rate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women in Public Life Perhaps no presentation of history is so difficult as that which treats of the growth of a new consciousness; but assuming that the historic review, now so universal in the field of social judgment and investigation, is applicable to any current development, I have ventured to apply it to that disturbing manifestation called the "votes-for-women" movement, which at the present moment is not only the centre of hot debate but, unhappily, also of conduct which in the minds of many is most unseemly. Because I shall need the indulgence of the reader who may kindly follow this review, I will at once recall to his mind the statement of an ironic Englishman that it would be better to be convicted of petty larceny than to be found wanting in historic mindedness. To begin then with the world-wide aspect of the votes-for-women movement - that there may be nothing more petty about us than the theme itself imposes - it is possible to make certain classifications of underlying trends, which, while not always clear, and sometimes overlapping, are yet international in their manifestations. First: the movement is obviously a part of that evolutionary conception of self-government which has been slowly developing through the centuries. For the simple reason that self-government must ever be built up anew in relation to changing experiences, its history is largely a record of new human interests which have become the object of governmental action, and of the incorporation into the body politic of the classes representing those interests. As the governing classes have been enlarged by the enfranchisement of one body of men after another, government itself has not only become enriched through new human interests, but at the same time it has become further democratized through the accession of the new classes representing those interests. The two propositions are complementary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: From one of our most important scholars and civil rights activist icon, a powerful study of the women’s liberation movement and the tangled knot of oppression facing Black women. “Angela Davis is herself a woman of undeniable courage. She should be heard.”—The New York Times Angela Davis provides a powerful history of the social and political influence of whiteness and elitism in feminism, from abolitionist days to the present, and demonstrates how the racist and classist biases of its leaders inevitably hampered any collective ambitions. While Black women were aided by some activists like Sarah and Angelina Grimke and the suffrage cause found unwavering support in Frederick Douglass, many women played on the fears of white supremacists for political gain rather than take an intersectional approach to liberation. Here, Davis not only contextualizes the legacy and pitfalls of civil and women’s rights activists, but also discusses Communist women, the murder of Emmitt Till, and Margaret Sanger’s racism. Davis shows readers how the inequalities between Black and white women influence the contemporary issues of rape, reproductive freedom, housework and child care in this bold and indispensable work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While historians have long recognized the importance of memorabilia to the Woman Suffrage movement, the subject has not been explored apart from a few restricted, albeit excellent, studies. Part of the problem is that such objects are scattered about in various collections and museums and can be difficult to access. Another is that most scholars do not have ready knowledge 1of the general nature and history of the type of objects (postcards, badges, sashes, toys, ceramics, sheet music, etc.) that suffragists produced. Then-new techniques in both printing and manufacturing created numerous possibilities for supporters to develop campaigns of "visual rhetoric." This work analyzes 70 different categories of suffrage memorabilia, while providing numerous images of relevant objects along the way and discussing these innovative production methods. Most important, this study looks at period accounts, often fascinating, of how, why when, and where the memorabilia were used in both America and England.
