Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The war in Syria, now in its eighth year, continues to take its toll on the Syrian people. More than half of the population of Syria remains displaced; 5.6 million persons are registered as refugees outside of the country and another 6.2 million are displaced within Syria's borders. The internally displaced persons include 2 million school-age children; of these, less than half attend school. Another 739,000 Syrian children are out of school in the five neighborhood countries that host Syria's refugees. The loss of human capital is staggering, and it will create permanent hardships for generations of Syrians going forward. Despite the tragic prospects for renewed fighting in certain parts of the country, an overall reduction in armed conflict is possible going forward. However, international experience shows that the absence of fighting is rarely a singular trigger for the return of displaced people. Numerous other factors—including improved security and socioeconomic conditions in origin states, access to property and assets, the availability of key services, and restitution in home areas—play important roles in shaping the scale and composition of the returns. Overall, refugees have their own calculus of return that considers all of these factors and assesses available options. The Mobility of Displaced Syrians: An Economic and Social Analysis sheds light on the 'mobility calculus' of Syrian refugees. While dismissing any policies that imply wrongful practices involving forced repatriation, the study analyzes factors that may be considered by refugees in their own decisions to relocate. It provides a conceptual framework, supported by data and analysis, to facilitate an impartial conversation about refugees and their mobility choices. It also explores the diversified policy toolkit that the international community has available—and the most effective ways in which the toolkit can be adapted—to maximize the well-being of refugees, host countries, and the people in Syria.

Book excerpt: Nineteen Arab women journalists speak out about what it’s like to report on their changing homelands in this first-of-its-kind essay collection, with a foreword by CNN chief international correspondent Christiane Amanpour “A stirring, provocative and well-made new anthology . . . that rewrites the hoary rules of the foreign correspondent playbook, deactivating the old clichés.” —Dwight Garner, The New York Times A growing number of intrepid Arab and Middle Eastern sahafiyat—female journalists—are working tirelessly to shape nuanced narratives about their changing homelands, often risking their lives on the front lines of war. From sexual harassment on the streets of Cairo to the difficulty of traveling without a male relative in Yemen, their challenges are unique—as are their advantages, such as being able to speak candidly with other women at a Syrian medical clinic or with men on Whatsapp who will go on to become ISIS fighters, rebels, or pro-regime soldiers. In Our Women on the Ground, nineteen of these women tell us, in their own words, about what it’s like to report on conflicts that (quite literally) hit close to home. Their daring and heartfelt stories, told here for the first time, shatter stereotypes about the region’s women and provide an urgently needed perspective on a part of the world that is frequently misunderstood. It is bordered by Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, Israel to the southwest, and Lebanon to the west. Syria covers a total area of around 185,000 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 17 million people. Syria has a rich history with many ancient civilizations, including the Phoenicians, Romans, and Byzantines, leaving their mark on the country. The Arab Islamic conquest led to the introduction of Islam in the 7th century. Syria became part of the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century, and after World War I, it became a French mandate before gaining independence in 1946. Syria has faced a number of internal and external challenges in recent years, including political instability, civil war, economic crisis, and displacement of millions of people. The ongoing Syrian conflict, which began in March 2011, has caused widespread destruction and displacement, resulting in Syria being one of the largest humanitarian crises of our time.

Book excerpt: Dear All, In view that Vladimir Putin is increasingly indisposed, with a Political decoy taking his place, a Governmental Change in Russia is imperative; to stop the killing of innocent children in Putin's illegal war on Ukraine - which is a blatant violation of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). I would like to emphasize, that I would be quite happy to drink a Водка together with my dear friend Vladimir Putin once he has agreed to officially resign. However, should I indeed come to Moscow and lead Россия into a new age of Peace and Prosperity, I want to make it perfectly clear that I don't want to get assassinated in the process: ) On that note, it should be mentioned that Assassination is one of the oldest tools of power politics. It dates back at least as far as recorded history. But regrettably Russia has not evolved beyond this negative and primitive political method yet - which is a problem, because then people are ruled by the apprehension to fear of injury or harm. And not by Liberty and Freedom - which I'm sure all Russian People aspire for: ) Nobody wants to be in fear of being assassinated; in particular good decent Russian People, who just want to engage in their democratic freedoms - such as Freedom of Press, Assembly, Association and Speech - as stipulated by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). So what's the problem in Russia? Why is the Putin regime preventing the People of Russia from having these Basic Freedoms? Indeed, it's a difficult question. But one problem may be, that key people in the Putin regime are afraid that they (and their family members), will fall victim to a witch-hunt once the Putin regime falls. Hence we are offering an Amnesty to the close allies of Vladimir Putin and military officers - to encourage them to end Putin's illegal war on Ukraine, that has cost countless of lives - so that International human rights law (IHRL) can be restored in the world. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent advances in important aspects of the lives of girls and women, pervasive challenges remain. These challenges reflect widespread deprivations and constraints and include epidemic levels of gender-based violence and discriminatory laws and norms that prevent women from owning property, being educated, and making meaningful decisions about their own lives--such as whether and when to marry or have children. These often violate their most basic rights and are magnified and multiplied by poverty and lack of education. This groundbreaking book distills vast data and hundreds of studies to shed new light on deprivations and constraints facing the voice and agency of women and girls worldwide, and on the associated costs for individuals, families, communities, and global development. The volume presents major new findings about the patterns of constraints and overlapping deprivations and focuses on several areas key to women s empowerment: freedom from violence, sexual and reproductive health and rights, ownership of land and housing, and voice and collective action. It highlights promising reforms and interventions from around the world and lays out an urgent agenda for governments, civil society, development agencies, and other stakeholders, including a call for greater investment in data and knowledge to benchmark progress.

Book excerpt: For over 40 years, the leading international treaty body on women's rights, the Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (the CEDAW Committee), has been generating jurisprudence interpreting CEDAW's obligations that states protect the equal rights of women. This book concludes that CEDAW's re-engendering of property--although a flawed and evolving work in progress--has the potential to be transformative for the half of the planet who is more likely to be treated as property than to have any.
