Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than half of the world's farmers are women. They are the majority of the poor, the uneducated and are the first to suffer from drought and famine. Yet their subordination is reinforced by well-meaning development policies that perpetuate social inequalities. During the 1975-85 United Nations Decade for the Advancement of Women their position actually worsened. This book analyses three decades of policies towards Third World women. Focusing on global economic and political crises - debt, famine, militarization, fundamentalism - the authors show how women's moves to organize effective strategies for basic survival are central to an understanding of the development process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the development process is marked by male bias - ill-founded and unjustified asymmetries that operate in favour of men and against women. The contributors include some of the leading writers in the gender and development field - Diane Elson, Delia Davin, Susie Jacobs, Carolyne Dennis, Alison MacEwan Scott and Ruth Pearson. Together they analyze the variety of forms taken by male bias: its foundations and the way it changes over time; and the possibilities of overcoming it. The cases considered cover both urban and rural settings; agriculture, industry and services; self-employment and wage-employment; and Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Download or read book Gendered Paradoxes written by Amy Lind and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 1980s Ecuador has experienced a series of events unparalleled in its history. Its &“free market&” strategies exacerbated the debt crisis, and in response new forms of social movement organizing arose among the country&’s poor, including women&’s groups. Gendered Paradoxes focuses on women&’s participation in the political and economic restructuring process of the past twenty-five years, showing how in their daily struggle for survival Ecuadorian women have both reinforced and embraced the neoliberal model yet also challenged its exclusionary nature. Drawing on her extensive ethnographic fieldwork and employing an approach combining political economy and cultural politics, Amy Lind charts the growth of several strands of women&’s activism and identifies how they have helped redefine, often in contradictory ways, the real and imagined boundaries of neoliberal development discourse and practice. In her analysis of this ambivalent and &“unfinished&” cultural project of modernity in the Andes, she examines state policies and their effects on women of various social sectors; women&’s community development initiatives and responses to the debt crisis; and the roles played by feminist &“issue networks&” in reshaping national and international policy agendas in Ecuador and in developing a transnationally influenced, locally based feminist movement.

Book Synopsis Searching for Security by : Isa Baud
Download or read book Searching for Security written by Isa Baud and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human Security is a development buzzword of the 1990s. To attain security people need to be safe from natural disasters, such as famine, and 'man-made' problems, such as unemployment. Women are a particularly insecure section of society with the impact of deprivation disproportionately shouldered by women throughout the developing world. Searching for Security examines how economic, political and environmental factors have contributed to increased gender insecurity in the last decade. Analyzing the impacts of insecurity-inducing global changes on the lives of women throughout the developing world, the book discusses the gender responses to these changing circumstances from Africa to Malaysia, Hungary to the Caribbean. By examining the impact of liberal economic policies, and to a lesser extent the impact of war, rape and environmental damage on the lives of women, this collection of essays makes a timely contribution to emerging policy efforts to recognize and address the issue of gender insecurity.
Download or read book Unequal Burden written by Lourdes Beneria and published by Westview Press. This book was released on 1992-08-24 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The debt crisis and global economic changes of the 1980s caused Third World nations to restructure economic policies, community resources, the labor market, and intra-household divisions of labor. These changes swelled the ranks of the unemployed, the poor, and the malnourished. Women, in particular, were affected negatively by processes of structural adjustment because they represent a disproportionate share of the world's poor, are increasingly represented among low-wage workers, and are forced to balance wage work with subsistence and domestic production in meeting household needs. Using country-based studies, this text offers new perspectives on the consequences of economic crisis in terms of changing state practices and household and family organization, patterns of resource allocation, and women's work.
Book Synopsis Paying the Price by : Mariarosa Dalla Costa
Download or read book Paying the Price written by Mariarosa Dalla Costa and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of studies of the negative impact of the debt crisis and structural adjustment presents a new and damning argument against the World Bank and the IMF. They suggest not only that structural adjustment policies have serious consequences for the family and social organization in developing countries, affecting fertility, life expectancy, health, education, the sexual division of labour and land-tenure relations, but that these consequences were foreseen by the architects of the policies. The authors point out that women suffer more than men from structural adjustment, yet it is they who are at the forefront of grassroots mobilization and resistance. Women now represent a particular focus for international institutions whose programmes, in the name of development, are producing ever increasing levels of poverty.
Download or read book Voice and Agency written by Jeni Klugman and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite recent advances in important aspects of the lives of girls and women, pervasive challenges remain. These challenges reflect widespread deprivations and constraints and include epidemic levels of gender-based violence and discriminatory laws and norms that prevent women from owning property, being educated, and making meaningful decisions about their own lives--such as whether and when to marry or have children. These often violate their most basic rights and are magnified and multiplied by poverty and lack of education. This groundbreaking book distills vast data and hundreds of studies to shed new light on deprivations and constraints facing the voice and agency of women and girls worldwide, and on the associated costs for individuals, families, communities, and global development. The volume presents major new findings about the patterns of constraints and overlapping deprivations and focuses on several areas key to women s empowerment: freedom from violence, sexual and reproductive health and rights, ownership of land and housing, and voice and collective action. It highlights promising reforms and interventions from around the world and lays out an urgent agenda for governments, civil society, development agencies, and other stakeholders, including a call for greater investment in data and knowledge to benchmark progress.

Download or read book Women's Control Over Economic Resources and Access to Financial Resources, Including Microfinance written by and published by United Nations Publications. This book was released on 2009 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ensuring women's economic empowerment and access to and control over resources requires an integrated approach to growth and development, focused on gender-responsive employment promotion and informed by the interdependency between economic and social development. Social objectives need to be incorporated into economic policies. Economic growth strategies should give attention to the real economy and focus on creating a gender-sensitive macroeconomic environment, full employment and decent work, access to land, property and other productive resources as well as financial services, and full coverage of social protection measures. The Survey outlines a number of concrete recommendations in these critical areas, which if adopted, will facilitate women's equitable access to and control over economic and financial resources.

Book Synopsis Women, Globalization and Fragmentation in the Developing World by : H. Afshar
Download or read book Women, Globalization and Fragmentation in the Developing World written by H. Afshar and published by Springer. This book was released on 1999-07-05 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The process of globalization has had a dramatic impact on the lives of women in developing countries in the past decade. They have been increasingly drawn into insecure flexible employment working for the world market. The feminisation of the labour market has increased the burdens on women, and the inability of men to access full-time well-remunerated employment has exacerbated the process of male out-migration and has left many families headed by women. At the same time the reduction in state services and welfare has increased the burdens placed on women. Nevertheless the consequences of globalization have been different for different women in different places. In some circumstances it has created opportunities for greater empowerment, whilst in others it has stimulated a reaction and increased the subordination of women. This book explores the experiences of women in diverse local contexts within different cultures and faiths, drawing on case studies from Asia, Africa and Latin America. It draws out the contradictory and fragmented impact of globalization at the local level on the lives of women in the developing world.
