Book Synopsis The Fulani Matrix of Beauty and Art in the Djolof Region of Senegal by : Thomas McDonald Shaw
Download or read book The Fulani Matrix of Beauty and Art in the Djolof Region of Senegal written by Thomas McDonald Shaw and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fulani are one of the most widely dispersed groups in West Africa. This book focuses on one group, the Djolof Fulani, and takes a look at the Fulani castes, especially the griots and wood carvers. Its conclusion also discusses the problems of labelling objects as Fulani art. In particular it examines one kind of art, their milk bowls, which are made by men and decorated by women of the caste of wood carvers. There is an attempt to sort out the meaning and context of the geometric designs on the bowls. This study aims to fill a lacuna in the study of African art.
Book Synopsis Intrahousehold resource allocation and well-being by : Fatimata Dia Sow
Download or read book Intrahousehold resource allocation and well-being written by Fatimata Dia Sow and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-09-04 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this last decade, poverty in developing countries remains the most important topic of debate at the international level. The main challenge is how to build policies and programs on a gender perspective approach taking into account gender differences in behavior between male and female at the level of the household. This study is undertaken in a context of two earner partners living in mixed farming systems in Senegal where earnings come primarily from crops and livestock. This book provides substantial research focused on household decision-making regarding resource allocation and consumption. Moreover, it attempts to show empirical findings on the analysis of welfare and well-being through an innovative combination of subjective and objective methods. The research shows how important socioeconomic and cultural factors are in determining earnings from agricultural activities. Important determinants of productivity are related to women’s land access, non-labor income (transfers from migrants), and the wife's access to credit and health care. The research illustrates also that women's bargaining power may be strongly linked to their access to livestock resources, their mobility in purchasing food and medicine and their participation in the management of household finance. Analysis of decision-making regarding expenditures shows that women, more than men, value household goods (related to food, health and schooling expenditures) more than private goods. The results suggest that policies aimed at improving household livelihoods must understand gender differences, obligations and priorities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ideal for high school and undergraduate students, this addition to the Culture and Customs of Africa series examines the contemporary cultures and traditions of modern Gambia, from religious customs to literature to cuisine and much more. This title in the Culture and Customs of Africa series examines the traditions and customs of contemporary Gambia, a geographically tiny nation in the vast landscape of Africa that is home to a large number of various ethnic groups, each with its own distinctive way of life. It is a country that has been largely unknown in Western culture, with the exception of Alex Haley's book Roots and subsequent TV series, which highlights Gambia's historic significance in the slave trade. This book illuminates Gambian religion and worldview; literature and media; arts and architecture/housing; gender roles, marriage, and family; social customs, traditional dress, cuisine, and lifestyle; and music and dance. The author has successfully encapsulated both long-ago history and contemporary Gambia to provide students with a complete look at life in Gambia today. Information on past traditions and historic events is discussed in the context of how they pertain to life today and their influence on the constant evolution of Gambian life and culture.
