Book excerpt: Red Dashboard LLC Publications presents a book by John Berry, titled Wobbly Man-- John Berry's Wobbly Man belies the fact that - like his poems - he is a trim carpenter par excellence. His poems show off the elegant moldings of earnest feeling finely wrought. But be warned: Berry's invisible playmate is among those "weird-ass hippies" poet Dorothea Lasky loves. These poems rub us with patchouli and smudge us with sage so when we reach the other world we're all hippies. -Ed Zahniser, author of Mall-hopping with the Great I AM and At the End of the Self-help Rope. John Berry's Wobbly Man, are one of many lines which speak of becoming. Although each and every human endeavors to become, Berry's breadcrumbs of memory, emotion and uneasy truths make it clear to the reader that becoming is the most difficult, yet most beautiful part of a human's life. To know one is alive does not tell you how much one is living: Wobbly Man leads us through one man's journey to becoming and living. -Angela M. Carter, author of Memory Chose a Woman's Body. Wobbly Man is wisdom from a modern-day shaman that our world so desperately needs in these swift and turbulent times. Berry's poetry is a fusion of Whitman and Rumi, and it provides the light at the end of the day that we all require to rejuvenate our souls and our beings. Wobbly Man's testimonies to the healing power of nature, art, poetry and pure humanity resonate in every line. -Nicole Yurcaba, author of Backwoods and Back Words

Book excerpt: Our Young Man follows the life of a gorgeous Frenchman, Guy, as he goes from the industrial city of Clermont-Ferrand to the top of the modeling profession in New York City's fashion world, becoming the darling of Fire Island's gay community. Like Wilde's Dorian Grey, Guy never seems to age; at thirty-five he is still modeling, still enjoying lavish gifts from older men who believe he's twenty-three--though their attentions always come at a price. Ambivalently, Guy lets them believe, driven especially by the memory of growing up poor, until he finds he needs the lie to secure not only wealth, but love itself. Surveying the full spectrum of gay amorous life through the disco era and into the age of AIDS, Edmund White (who worked at Vogue for ten years) explores the power of physical beauty--to fascinate, to enslave, and to deceive--with sparkling wit and pathos.

Book excerpt: For use as a primary or supplemental text for Introductory Sociology, Social Theory, and senior "capstone" courses. An unabashedly "critical" text for those who want to connect their students′ personal experiences with what is happening at the societal, global level today. The emphasis is on teaching "the sociological imagination" (i.e., to instill in students a unique and radical form of consciousness that will allow them to conceptualize today′s chief global and individual problems and the relations between them). Dandaneau adopts a perspective like that of C. Wright Mills and argues that the sociological imagination is the "most needed" type of consciousness in the world today. The author encourages students to think through a wide variety of topics - from ecological crises to panic disorder, from hyperreality to the sociology of disability, from Generation X to Generation Next. As Dandaneau says, "The point ... is not so much to learn the truth, but to learn how to think about essential issues and troubles as sociologists themselves try to do, to become a participant with others in facing down the challenges of our present epoch." "It is an elegant and profound meditation on thinking sociologically. Written with a rare panache one seldom finds in sociology... it′s the product of a view of contemporary social life that is profoundly troubling... What this adds up to is a distinctive sociological and moral voice." - Peter Kivisto, Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois

Book excerpt: A gripping and exhaustively researched, first-time account of a feared gangbuster’s groundbreaking battles with organized crime, the KKK, and corruption at the highest levels of government sure to resonate with readers affected by the politics of contemporary society. At the height of the roaring 1920s, the ex-frontier town of Denver, Colorado, emerged from the postwar boom as the future of the American city. But the slick façade of progress and opportunity masked a murky stew of organized crime, elaborate swindles, and widespread government corruption. One man risked everything to alter the course of history. Rookie district attorney Phillip Van Cise was already making national headlines for a new brand of law enforcement. Employing military intelligence tools he’d developed during the Great War—wiretapping, undercover operatives, communication intercepts—Van Cise crippled the criminal empire of Lou Blonger, an ex-lawman who had risen from petty scam artist to master of the Big Con. But Van Cise had even darker, more malevolent forces on his radar. The Ku Klux Klan had emerged as a shockingly mainstream middle-class movement, employing anti-immigration scare tactics, encouraging vigilantism, and instigating culture wars, all while claiming to protect true American values. Van Cise saw the toxic ideology for what it was: a new version of the Big Con sold as populism. Utilizing his pioneering surveillance techniques, Van Cise was determined to expose the Invisible Empire from within. Gripping and exhaustively researched, this prescient chronicle of Phillip Van Cise’s spectacular career as a feared gangbuster taking on organized crime, the KKK, and corruption at the highest levels of government is a cautionary tale that mirrors our tumultuous times.

The man, Joe, gets involved with a small-time underground ring of criminals and with a young girl with secrets in her past. Joe goes on to defraud, terrorize, and kill the people in his immediate sphere, sometimes for a little money, more often as revenge for imagined insults and to bolster his own ego. The Tucson weather at its worst plays a large part in setting the atmosphere of despair and horror. Joe’s feelings of being persecuted grow as he antagonizes everyone he knows. His only consolation is in telling himself how smart he is as he figures the angle for his next misadventure. However, caught in a desert storm, a flash flood puts a permanent end to his schemes, one angle he never saw coming. Author Gil Meynier (1902-1978) published five books.

Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES TOP TEN BOOK OF THE YEAR • FINALIST FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD IN FICTION • A READ WITH JENNA BOOK CLUB PICK • NATIONAL BESTSELLER • Two top women gladiators fight for their freedom within a depraved private prison system not so far-removed from America’s own in this explosive, hotly-anticipated debut novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Friday Black • LONGLISTED FOR THE ANDREW CARNEGIE MEDAL FOR EXCELLENCE A Best Book of the Year: The New York Times, The Washington Post, NPR, Elle, Esquire, Chicago Tribune, Lit Hub, Kirkus Reviews “Like Orwell’s 1984 and Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, Adjei-Brenyah’s book presents a dystopian vision so…illuminating that it should permanently shift our understanding of who we are and what we’re capable of doing.” —The Washington Post “This book will change you!...A masterpiece.” —Jenna Bush Hager, The Today Show’s #ReadWithJenna She felt their eyes, all those executioners… Loretta Thurwar and Hamara “Hurricane Staxxx” Stacker are the stars of the Chain-Gang All-Stars, the cornerstone of CAPE, or Criminal Action Penal Entertainment, a highly popular, highly controversial profit-raising program in America’s increasingly dominant private prison industry. It’s the return of the gladiators, and prisoners are competing for the ultimate prize: their freedom. In CAPE, prisoners travel as Links in Chain-Gangs, competing in death matches before packed arenas with righteous protestors at the gates. Thurwar and Staxxx, both teammates and lovers, are the fan favorites. And if all goes well, Thurwar will be free in just a few matches, a fact she carries as heavily as her lethal hammer. As she prepares to leave her fellow Links, Thurwar considers how she might help preserve their humanity, in defiance of these so-called games. But CAPE’s corporate owners will stop at nothing to protect their status quo, and the obstacles they lay in Thurwar’s path have devastating consequences. Moving from the Links in the field to the protestors, to the CAPE employees and beyond, Chain-Gang All-Stars is a kaleidoscopic, excoriating look at the American prison system’s unholy alliance of systemic racism, unchecked capitalism, and mass incarceration, and a clear-eyed reckoning with what freedom in this country really means from a “new and necessary American voice” (Tommy Orange, The New York Times Book Review).

Book excerpt: The Honey Bubble takes us down into the forgotten, decomposing, inner-city Los Angeles neighborhoods most of us pass over on elevated freeways, and into the threadbare, desperate lives of the denizens there. Three owners of borderline skid-row gin mills hatch a dingbat scheme to bolster their revenues by, what else?, murdering the competition. The Competition is the only decent guy around, it seems; the honest owner/operator of the only watering hole in the area where youd even trust the ice. The three co-conspirators, no master criminals to begin with, set off a series of Rube Goldberg missteps and quickly begin to be devoured by their own scheme. When the intended victims bodyguard gets wind of the plot, the whole landscape darkens, and the second half of the novel becomes an accelerating, cinematic slide into a truly demonic and violent denouement, and a life-or-death climax you will never see coming. This book is at once very funny, genuinely frightening, elegantly crafted, and boasts one of the most truly frightening villains I have even encountered in print or film. Rodney Deming, screenwriter

On the voyage, a murder is committed and the captain encourages Mary to solve the crime. An inspection of the deceaseds life portrays him as an unsavoury character with a sordid past. Mary establishes half the ship wants him dead and the other half have their own reasons to escape to Australia. A ship full of secrets! Mary has two days to solve the crime with its numerous twists and turns. But Mary has a secret. Her best friend Younee is a gremlin who can read her mind, run faster than any other creature on earth and hide on her shoulder, under her hair. On numerous occasions he has stopped her death on the streets of London with some humourous results but their meeting was not accidental. Someone or something is playing with their lives. Mary doesn't have a past (at least one that she can remember) causing Younee to ensure Mary undergoes a stage of self awareness. Once Mary reviewed her position in society (being a waif ranks awfully low), she realised that without money she didn't have a future and the effect of old money would be lessened by distance, so they emigrate to Australia. This novel is a witty and humorous look at human nature, solving crimes and unlikely friendships. By the time you finish the last page, you will have been witness to a dastardly murder in England, a devious death on the voyage, a shipwreck on a coral reef and the establishment of the Unique Detective Agency in Sydney and be ready to read book 2.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Review Reviewed by Lit Amri for Readers' Favorite Written by Thom Thomas, Give or Take a Pebble: The Beginning is the first book in the " give or take " series and tells the story of Dr. Joshua Krump, a man who survives poverty, tragedies, and deaths to complete his medical education and become a surgeon. A wonderful story derived from Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Fans of Charles Dickens will definitely love this remarkable story. Give or Take a Pebble: The Beginning is built specifically around Tiny Tim, but with surgeon Dr. Joshua Krump as the main protagonist. Krump, for me, is a striving ambitious fellow, ridden by debt and his own personal misery. And just like Krump, I am also fascinated and troubled at the same time by the mature, twelve-year-old Belinda. Thom Thomas has written a vivid tale with beautiful descriptions of the Victorian era. His prose is flawless and the pace of the story is superb. It is clear that extensive research has been done to portray life in the 19th century and the medical practices at that time. This gives an authentic quality to the story and makes it more interesting. Thom Thomas weaves Joshua Krump's story expertly around Dickens's famous classic, providing an amazing and fascinating read. The ending is excellent, with a suspense that is both exciting and frustrating at the same time. A highly recommended novel and I absolutely look forward to the second book.
