Book Synopsis Neural Control of Speech by : Frank H. Guenther
Download or read book Neural Control of Speech written by Frank H. Guenther and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive and unified account of the neural computations underlying speech production, offering a theoretical framework bridging the behavioral and the neurological literatures. In this book, Frank Guenther offers a comprehensive, unified account of the neural computations underlying speech production, with an emphasis on speech motor control rather than linguistic content. Guenther focuses on the brain mechanisms responsible for commanding the musculature of the vocal tract to produce articulations that result in an acoustic signal conveying a desired string of syllables. Guenther provides neuroanatomical and neurophysiological descriptions of the primary brain structures involved in speech production, looking particularly at the cerebral cortex and its interactions with the cerebellum and basal ganglia, using basic concepts of control theory (accompanied by nontechnical explanations) to explore the computations performed by these brain regions. Guenther offers a detailed theoretical framework to account for a broad range of both behavioral and neurological data on the production of speech. He discusses such topics as the goals of the neural controller of speech; neural mechanisms involved in producing both short and long utterances; and disorders of the speech system, including apraxia of speech and stuttering. Offering a bridge between the neurological and behavioral literatures on speech production, the book will be a valuable resource for researchers in both fields.

The author uses balloons to help little grieving Admyire feel a sense of connection to his beloved grandfather who is now above the sky in heaven. Admyire and his sister Adour stare in disbelief into the sky as they watch a balloon that appears to have a vision of their grandfather in it. Their grandfather begins to entertain the kids by doing cool tricks like writing their names in the sky, changing colors, and dancing around the window that they are staring out of. After watching the balloon do all these fascinating tricks, Adour says to her brother Admyire, “I know why the wind makes balloons fly in the sky—it’s God’s way of letting us play with loved ones in heaven.” This fun balloon story for children helps adults understand that children miss their loved ones too and they also need to understand their loss.

Download or read book Romantic Climates written by Anne Collett and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-06-29 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to uncover how today’s ideas about climate and catastrophe have been formed by the thinking of Romantic poets, novelists and scientists, and how these same ideas might once more be harnessed to assist us in the new climate challenges facing us in the present. The global climate disaster following Mt Tambora’s eruption in 1815 – the ‘Year without a Summer’ – is a starting point from which to reconsider both how the Romantics responded to the changing climates of their day, and to think about how these climatic events shaped the development of Romanticism itself. As the contributions to this volume demonstrate, climate is an inescapable aspect of Romantic writing and thinking. Ideologies and experiences of climate inform everything from scientific writing to lyric poetry and novels. The ‘Diodati circle’ that assembled in Geneva in 1816 – Lord Byron, Percy and Mary Shelley, John Polidori and John Cam Hobhouse and the gothic novelist MG ‘Monk’ Lewis – is synonymous with the literature of that dreary, uncanny season. Essays in this collection also consider the work of Jane Austen, John Keats and William Wordsworth, along with less well-known figures such as the scientist Luke Howard, and later responses to Romantic climates by John Ruskin and Virginia Woolf.
