Book excerpt: A neurobiologist reexamines the personal nature of perception in this groundbreaking guide to a new model for our senses. We think of perception as a passive, mechanical process, as if our eyes are cameras and our ears microphones. But as neurobiologist Susan R. Barry argues, perception is a deeply personal act. Our environments, our relationships, and our actions shape and reshape our senses throughout our lives. This idea is no more apparent than in the cases of people who gain senses as adults. Barry tells the stories of Liam McCoy, practically blind from birth, and Zohra Damji, born deaf, in the decade following surgeries that restored their senses. As Liam and Zohra learned entirely new ways of being, Barry discovered an entirely new model of the nature of perception. Coming to Our Senses is a celebration of human resilience and a powerful reminder that, before you can really understand other people, you must first recognize that their worlds are fundamentally different from your own.

Blinded at age three, he defied expectations by breaking world records in downhill speed skiing, joining the CIA, and becoming a successful inventor, entrepreneur, and family man. He had never yearned for vision. Then, in 1999, a chance encounter brought startling news: a revolutionary stem cell transplant surgery could restore May’s vision. It would allow him to drive, to read, to see his children’s faces. But the procedure was filled with gambles, some of them deadly, others beyond May’s wildest dreams. Beautifully written and thrillingly told, Crashing Through is a journey of suspense, daring, romance, and insight into the mysteries of vision and the brain. Robert Kurson gives us a fascinating account of one man’s choice to explore what it means to see–and to truly live. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was first projected in 2004, when Author Hannah Fairbairn was teaching interpersonal skills at the Carroll Center for the Blind in Newton, Massachusetts. The experiences of her adult students—and her own experience of sight lost—convinced her that everyone losing vision needs access to good information about the process of adjustment to losing sight and practical ways to use assertive speech. When You Can’t Believe Your Eyes is intended for anyone going through vision loss, their friends, and families. It will inform readers how to get expert professional help, face the trauma of loss, and navigate the world using speech more than sight. Each of the twelve chapters in the book contain many short sections and bullet-point lists, intended to facilitate access to the right information. It begins where you begin—at the doctor’s office or the hospital. Since vision loss takes many forms, there are suggestions for questions you might ask to get a clear diagnosis and the best treatment. Part One also has a description of legal blindness and possible prevention, advice about your job, and tips for life at home. Part Two is about believing in yourself as you deal with the loss, the anger, and the fear before you come up for air and consider training. Parts Three and Four describe using assertive speech and action in all kinds of settings as your independence and confidence increase. Part Five gives detailed information about everything from dating, and caring for babies to senior living, volunteering, and retaining your job. It is hoped that by reading and trying out the suggestions, the reader will recover full confidence, become a positive, assertive communicator, and lead a satisfying life. Because vision loss happens mostly in older years, the book is written with seniors particularly in mind. Professionals will also find it to be a useful resource for their patients.

Book excerpt: Better Eyesight Without Glasses is not only the definitive source for the classic Bates Method, it is in itself a remarkable phenomenon. Dr. William H. Bates’s revolutionary and entirely commonsensical theory of self-taught improved eyesight has helped hundreds of thousands of people to triumph over normal defects of vision without the mechanical aid of eyeglasses. If you think that your eyesight could be made better by natural methods, you are right. After years of experimentation, Dr. Bates came to the conclusion that many people who wore glasses did not need them. He gradually and carefully developed a simple group of exercises for improving the ability of the eyes themselves to see, eliminating the tension caused by poor visual habits that are the major cause of bad eyesight. These exercises are based on the firm belief that it is the natural function of the eyes to see clearly and that anyone, child or adult, can learn to see better without glasses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You don't need to be university educated, have money, be creative, or even have an idea to get rich. You just need to be willing to break the rules. How to be a Capitalist Without Any Capital will teach you how to be a modern opportunist - investor, entrepreneur, or side hustler - by breaking these four golden rules of the old guard: 1. Focus on one skill: Wrong. Don't cultivate one great skill to get ahead. In today's business world, success goes to the multitaskers. 2. Be unique: Wrong. The way to get rich is not by launching a new idea but by aggressively copying others and then adding your own twist. 3. Focus on one goal: Wrong. Focus instead on creating a system to produce the outcome you want, not just once, but over and over again. 4. Appeal to the masses: Wrong. The masses are broke ($4k average net worth in America?). Let others cut a trail through the jungle so you can peacefully walk in and capitalize on their hard work. By rejecting these defunct rules and following Nathan Latka's unconventional path, you can copy other people's ideas shamelessly, bootstrap a start-up with almost no funding, invest in small local businesses for huge payoffs, and reap all the benefits.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Editors' Choice A Washington Independent Review of Books Favorite Book of 2021 A writer’s humorous and often-heartbreaking tale of losing his sight—and how he hid it from the world. At age sixteen, James Tate Hill was diagnosed with Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy, a condition that left him legally blind. When high-school friends stopped calling and a disability counselor advised him to aim for C’s in his classes, he tried to escape the stigma by pretending he could still see. In this unfailingly candid yet humorous memoir, Hill discloses the tricks he employed to pass for sighted, from displaying shelves of paperbacks he read on tape to arriving early on first dates so women would have to find him. He risked his life every time he crossed a street, doing his best to listen for approaching cars. A good memory and pop culture obsessions like Tom Cruise, Prince, and all things 1980s allowed him to steer conversations toward common experiences. For fifteen years, Hill hid his blindness from friends, colleagues, and lovers, even convincing himself that if he stared long enough, his blurry peripheral vision would bring the world into focus. At thirty, faced with a stalled writing career, a crumbling marriage, and a growing fear of leaving his apartment, he began to wonder if there was a better way.

Book excerpt: An updated and revised edition detailing the 'Bates method', a technique which claims to the retrain the eye so contact lenses and glasses are no longer needed. The method aims to restore sight by using exercises to relax the eye muscles before retraining the eyes to focus effectively. Prescription glasses act as a prop for the muscles in your eyes and so, over time, the muscles actually get weaker. In fact, in the long term, glasses can only ever weaken your eyes. But, with the Bates Method you can retrain the eye muscles to work again, and perhaps even learn to do without glasses altogether. The Bates Method works two-folds, firstly with a series of exercises that relax and soothe the eye muscles, and secondly, retrains the relaxed eyes to focus effectively. The exercises are simple and easy to follow, and millions around the world have improved their vision using them. The book has influenced whole generations of people who believe that wearing glasses is the best way to improve your eyesight.

Book excerpt: Mind Sight, also known as "seeing without eyes," has recently become well known thanks to the internet and social media. This book is a training manual intended for adults who seek to learn seeing without eyes in the comfort of their own home. This is not designed for adults who are severely visually impaired. This text includes many exercises and access to downloadable materials from the book's website. Most importantly, it offers a day-by-day practice program that can last the reader anywhere from one to three years, depending on how regularly one engages in the training. The exercises are for self-training. No partners, groups, or instructors are needed. Training with others can be beneficial, though. These exercises are easily modified to use with a partner in person or over the internet. For those who cannot afford expensive international training events, or who would prefer solo training for any other reason, this book is ideal. Learning to perceive colors, shapes, black and white, letters, and numbers are significant portions of the training. Boredom-busters and ideas for keeping things fresh are included. The paperback version of this book also includes a training log/journal, so that readers can track their progress and record their insights. Because of this, eBook readers or audiobook listeners are urged to consider the paperback version instead, or purchase the paperback "Mind Sight Training Log" separately, or use a blank notebook. Mind Sight includes personal guidance and anecdotes from the author's own training experiences. This book is designed for adult learners only, as adults tend to learn this ability more slowly than children. The reader's patience, grit, openness, curiosity, humor, as well as a fun and relaxed attitude are required. Being a self-motivated person is extremely important for this process. This book is a pilot program. Therefore, results will largely depend on how much time and effort the reader applies to it, as well as other conditions of daily life (i.e. stress). Nothing is guaranteed. Those who train regularly may realize various meditative and self-developmental benefits. Readers who engage the training will need to purchase simple materials listed in the book for their home training. These materials are typically available in craft, hobby, and office supply stores. Through his books, online courses, and in-person classes, Sean McNamara has taught Telekinesis, Lucid Dreaming, Out-of-Body Experiences, Remote Viewing, and Meditation. He appeared in the 2020 film "SUPERHUMAN: The Invisible Made Visible" in the segment on telekinesis, as well as other shows. For more about the author, visit http://www.MindPossible.com.

This book was released on 2017-01-15 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to see deeply affects how human beings perceive and interpret the world around them. For most people, eyesight is part of everyday communication, social activities, educational and professional pursuits, the care of others, and the maintenance of personal health, independence, and mobility. Functioning eyes and vision system can reduce an adult's risk of chronic health conditions, death, falls and injuries, social isolation, depression, and other psychological problems. In children, properly maintained eye and vision health contributes to a child's social development, academic achievement, and better health across the lifespan. The public generally recognizes its reliance on sight and fears its loss, but emphasis on eye and vision health, in general, has not been integrated into daily life to the same extent as other health promotion activities, such as teeth brushing; hand washing; physical and mental exercise; and various injury prevention behaviors. A larger population health approach is needed to engage a wide range of stakeholders in coordinated efforts that can sustain the scope of behavior change. The shaping of socioeconomic environments can eventually lead to new social norms that promote eye and vision health. Making Eye Health a Population Health Imperative: Vision for Tomorrow proposes a new population-centered framework to guide action and coordination among various, and sometimes competing, stakeholders in pursuit of improved eye and vision health and health equity in the United States. Building on the momentum of previous public health efforts, this report also introduces a model for action that highlights different levels of prevention activities across a range of stakeholders and provides specific examples of how population health strategies can be translated into cohesive areas for action at federal, state, and local levels.
