Book excerpt: Portfolios can easily become elaborate paper collections, glitzy scrapbooks that teachers keep. With Portfolio in Hand presents instead the evolution of a different concept of the teaching portfolio, as the warrant of a new kind of professional teacher. Not simply the result of efforts to reform teacher testing, the teaching portfolio attempts to capture and document the complex mindfulness of competent and effective teachers. In this book, the current tensions of portfolios are explored whether portfolios serve personal or public needs, whether they are used for teacher evaluation or professional development using current portfolio practices at teacher education institutions from Maine to California. The text also includes hands-on guidance to help teachers prepare useful portfolios.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new facsimile edition of the Portfolio of the 13th-century Picard artist Villard de Honnecourt is the first ever to be published in color. The thirty-three leaves are reproduced at actual size from high-quality color transparencies to ensure the best possible color reproduction of the drawings. One can now see variations in inks and quill strokes, traces of preliminary drawings, and corrections made by the artist. This study is also the first to give a thorough description of the condition of the leaves, analysis of each drawing in the portfolio individually, and new transcriptions and literal and free translations of the inscriptions. The opening chapter covers the history and physical condition of the portfolio, including reassigning "hands" to text found on the leaves. The author analyses the tools and inks used, Villard's drawing technique and style, and evaluates Villard as an artist-draftsman. Chapter II, the body of the book, is devoted to detailed analyses of the leaves, one by one, and their drawings and inscriptions. These analyses are of interest to those concerned with medieval technology and theology as well as to those interested in medieval art and architecture. Chapter III is a new biography of Villard that challenges the many wild speculations of the last century and a half about Villard, separating obvious fiction from possible fact. Barnes analyzes in detail Villard's drawings of different Gothic buildings and makes a case for Villard having been a lay representative of the cathedral chapter at Cambrai, one of the buildings Villard drew. An extensive bibliography of Villard studies and a glossary of Villard's technical and artistic terms complete this important new study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph presents a comprehensive study of portfolio optimization, an important area of quantitative finance. Considering that the information available in financial markets is incomplete and that the markets are affected by vagueness and ambiguity, the monograph deals with fuzzy portfolio optimization models. At first, the book makes the reader familiar with basic concepts, including the classical mean–variance portfolio analysis. Then, it introduces advanced optimization techniques and applies them for the development of various multi-criteria portfolio optimization models in an uncertain environment. The models are developed considering both the financial and non-financial criteria of investment decision making, and the inputs from the investment experts. The utility of these models in practice is then demonstrated using numerical illustrations based on real-world data, which were collected from one of the premier stock exchanges in India. The book addresses both academics and professionals pursuing advanced research and/or engaged in practical issues in the rapidly evolving field of portfolio optimization.

The subject is important because the formation of alliances and, more generally, the networking of SMEs, could be an alternative to the lack of medium-sized companies in France. For French SCIs, which are increasingly in a competitive situation, assistance in forming alliances for their holdings may represent a new activity and be a source of competitive advantage. The work is positioned transversally, touching the areas of corporate governance, entrepreneurial finance and strategy.

This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the international portfolio flows of European Union. Our analysis includes three dimensions: (1) the level of countries portfolio investment concentration (those who invest evenly among counterparties versus those who invest more heavily in some counterparties); (2) the share of total portfolio investment assets invested at the destination; and (3) pre- and during the crisis periods. We find that portfolio investment positions respond differently to macroeconomic variables depending on the level of investment concentration and the share of invested assets. In particular, variables of health of the financial system become important determinants for portfolio investment during the crisis.
