This book was released on 2015-07-08 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from With Open Face or Jesus Mirrored in Matthew, Mark, and Luke Of the thirteen chapters contained in this Volume, nine have appeared in The Expositor, in the course of this year. The last four chapters appear now for the first time. These popular sketches of the spirit and teaching of our Lord, as exhibited in selected scenes from the Evangelic Records, are the overflow from severer studies on the first three Gospels, meant to meet the wants of professional students of Scripture. In the preparation of the larger work, I have seen some things in a fresh light, of which I endeavour, in the following pages, to give general readers the benefit. Book Synopsis Matthew, Mark, Luke & John by : Nancy L. Lutz
Download or read book Matthew, Mark, Luke & John written by Nancy L. Lutz and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2008-10-20 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is neither a commentary nor an interpretation of the Gospels, but a straightforward and detailed matching of Matthew Mark Luke and John to be used by everyone that desires to have an in depth knowledge of the teachings of Jesus Christ. After many years of cross-referencing passages in the Gospels, I decided to come up with a way that all four gospels could be read together. I made a copy of each and started to assemble each book by similar topic. This book is not intended to replace reading the Bible but to provide an interesting look into each of the gospels by comparable subject. It has an extensive index by page number, study topic and chapter and verse of each gospel. I hope you enjoy using this reference book for your studies of the word of God as I have had in arranging the Gospels. May you have a deeper understanding of the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Book Synopsis The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark by : Dennis Ronald MacDonald
Download or read book The Homeric Epics and the Gospel of Mark written by Dennis Ronald MacDonald and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking book, Dennis R. MacDonald offers an entirely new view of the New Testament gospel of Mark. The author of the earliest gospel was not writing history, nor was he merely recording tradition, MacDonald argues. Close reading and careful analysis show that Mark borrowed extensively from the Odyssey and the Iliad and that he wanted his readers to recognise the Homeric antecedents in Mark's story of Jesus. Mark was composing a prose anti-epic, MacDonald says, presenting Jesus as a suffering hero modeled after but far superior to traditional Greek heroes. Much like Odysseus, Mark's Jesus sails the seas with uncomprehending companions, encounters preternatural opponents, and suffers many things before confronting rivals who have made his house a den of thieves. In his death and burial, Jesus emulates Hector, although unlike Hector Jesus leaves his tomb empty. Mark's minor characters, too, recall Homeric predecessors: Bartimaeus emulates Tiresias; Joseph of Arimathea, Priam; and the women at the tomb, Helen, Hecuba, and Andromache. And, entire episodes in Mark mirror Homeric episodes, including stilling the sea, walking on water, feeding the multitudes, the Triumphal E

Book Synopsis Two Shipwrecked Gospels by : Dennis R. MacDonald
Download or read book Two Shipwrecked Gospels written by Dennis R. MacDonald and published by Society of Biblical Lit. This book was released on 2012-06-29 with total page 729 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With characteristic boldness and careful reassessment of the evidence, MacDonald offers an alternative reconstruction of Q and an alternative solution to the Synoptic Problem: the Q+/Papias Hypothesis. To do so, he reconstructs and interprets two lost books about Jesus: the earliest Gospel, which was used as a source by the authors of Mark, Matthew, and Luke; and the earliest commentary on the Gospels, by Papias of Hierapolis, who apparently knew Mark, Matthew, and the lost Gospel, which he considered to be an alternative Greek translation of a Semitic Matthew. MacDonald also explores how these two texts, well known into the fourth century, shipwrecked with the canonization of the New Testament and the embarrassment at outmoded eschatologies in both the lost Gospel and Papias’s Exposition.

Book Synopsis The Torn Veil by : Daniel M. Gurtner
Download or read book The Torn Veil written by Daniel M. Gurtner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-12-21 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this 2006 text, Daniel M. Gurtner examines the meaning of the rending of the veil at the death of Jesus in Matthew 27:51a by considering the functions of the veil in the Old Testament and its symbolism in Second Temple and Rabbinic Judaism. Gurtner incorporates these elements into a compositional exegesis of the rending text in Matthew. He concludes that the rending of the veil is an apocalyptic assertion like the opening of heaven revealing, in part, end-time images drawn from Ezekiel 37. Moreover, when the veil is torn Matthew depicts the cessation of its function, articulating the atoning role of Christ's death which gives access to God not simply in the sense of entering the Holy of Holies (as in Hebrews), but in trademark Matthean Emmanuel Christology: 'God with us'. This underscores the significance of Jesus' atoning death in the first gospel.
