Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beards—they’re all the rage these days. Take a look around: from hip urbanites to rustic outdoorsmen, well-groomed metrosexuals to post-season hockey players, facial hair is everywhere. The New York Times traces this hairy trend to Big Apple hipsters circa 2005 and reports that today some New Yorkers pay thousands of dollars for facial hair transplants to disguise patchy, juvenile beards. And in 2014, blogger Nicki Daniels excoriated bearded hipsters for turning a symbol of manliness and power into a flimsy fashion statement. The beard, she said, has turned into the padded bra of masculinity. Of Beards and Men makes the case that today’s bearded renaissance is part of a centuries-long cycle in which facial hairstyles have varied in response to changing ideals of masculinity. Christopher Oldstone-Moore explains that the clean-shaven face has been the default style throughout Western history—see Alexander the Great’s beardless face, for example, as the Greek heroic ideal. But the primacy of razors has been challenged over the years by four great bearded movements, beginning with Hadrian in the second century and stretching to today’s bristled resurgence. The clean-shaven face today, Oldstone-Moore says, has come to signify a virtuous and sociable man, whereas the beard marks someone as self-reliant and unconventional. History, then, has established specific meanings for facial hair, which both inspire and constrain a man’s choices in how he presents himself to the world. This fascinating and erudite history of facial hair cracks the masculine hair code, shedding light on the choices men make as they shape the hair on their faces. Oldstone-Moore adeptly lays to rest common misperceptions about beards and vividly illustrates the connection between grooming, identity, culture, and masculinity. To a surprising degree, we find, the history of men is written on their faces.

Book excerpt: Some teach you how to love and stay in love. But nobody tells you what love is or how to acquire it when you don’t have it. How are you supposed to love someone and find happiness if you don’t love yourself, or find happiness within, first? Hugo Bradford’s life changed in an instant when his relationship ended with who might have been the love of his life. Then, he failed once again when he decided to be a different man—a better man. Hugo then set on a path of introspection and healing by researching through the sciences and submerging himself with the voices of experts, experience, and the opinion of women. All to answer one underlying question—what is love? The Anatomy of Love is as sensible as it is perceptive. Tackling the third-most searched word worldwide. Love—A simple, four-letter word that produces over fourteen billion search results on search engines across the internet. Is love something as simple as an evolutionary trait of consciousness and chemical potion in our brains? Or does it mean something else, something we can’t yet explain? This book reveals fundamental truths and uses appropriate, applicable knowledge in ways that work for everyone.

Book excerpt: EASY STREET is a guide for players in improvised interactive environmental performance, walkaround entertainment, and first-person historical reenacting. It's also about much, much more than that, because the principles of effective Street play apply to any situation involving connections between people: sellers and customers, teachers and students, service providers and clients, programmers and end-users, co-workers, teammates, and fellow members of Leagues of Superheroes thrive wildly when these principles are in play. A-E Shapera has performed and taught at Shakespeare festivals, Renaissance Faires, fringe festivals and historical reenactments for over twenty years. Her walkaround character, Jane the Phoole, has performed by invitation at England's Muncaster Castle, home to the original "Tom Fool," and is the Official Municipal Jester of the City of Milwaukee. With a pithy blurb by bestselling author Christopher Moore!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Drake presents a new interpretation of Charles Austin Beard's life and work. The foremost American historian and a leading public intellectual in the first half of the twentieth century, Beard participated actively in the debates about American politics and foreign policy surrounding the two world wars. Drake takes this famous man's life and rewrites his intellectual biography by placing the European dimension of Beard's thought at the center. This radical change of critical focus allows Drake to correct previous biographers' oversights and, in Charles Austin Beard, present a far more nuanced appreciation for Beard's life than we have read before. Drake proposes a restoration of Beard's professional reputation, which he lost in large part because of his extremely unpopular opposition to America's intervention in World War II. Drake analyzes the stages of Beard's development as a historian and critic: his role as an intellectual leader in the Progressive movement, the support that he gave to the cause of American intervention in World War I, and his subsequent revisionist repudiation of Wilsonian ideals and embrace of non-interventionism in the lead-up to World War II. Many of his dire predictions about the inevitable consequences of pre-World War II American foreign policy have come to pass. Drake shows that, as Americans tally the ruinous costs—both financial and moral—of nation-building and informal empire, the life and work of this prophet of history merit a thorough reexamination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who's to blame when a vain, heedless king meets his comeuppance? He is, of course! Fans of Tomi Ungerer's mischievous humor and Jon Agee's sly morality tales will be delighted by this hilarious read-aloud about a long, long beard and its short-sighted royal owner, by a popular Belgian illustrator, designer, and animation whiz. The lush, golden royal beard is a wondrous thing - especially to the king himself. He spends his days admiring and grooming it, and passes laws making it a crime punishable by death for anyone else's face to sport even a single hair. As the people of the kingdom nervously shave daily, the royal beard grows and grows until it appears at the palace's back gate. What happens next will have readers laughing along -- and cheering for the astronomers who, unlike the tyrannical king, know that the earth is round.
