Wissenschaft steht in enger Wechselwirkung mit der übrigen Gesellschaft.Es werden fünf Theorieansätze vorgestellt, die das Verhältnis Wissenschaft - Gesellschaft thematisieren: die Kritische Theorie der Frankfurter Schule; Feministische Erkenntnistheorien; die institutionalistische Wissenschaftssoziologie; die Soziologie wissenschaftlicher Erkenntnis und Theorieansätze zu Neuen Formen der Wissensproduktion.Wenn auch auf sehr unterschiedliche Weise zeigen diese Arbeiten, dass es kein Tabu mehr ist, über gesellschaftliche (auch gewerkschaftliche) Einflussnahme auf Wissenschaft zu diskutieren. Forschung ist ein Prozess, der aus sozialen Interaktionen besteht, in einem sozialen Kontext stattfindet und von sozialen Erkenntnisinteressen geprägt ist.Anhand eines Beispiels aus der Pharmaforschung wird gezeigt, wie die verschiedenen Ansätze der Wissenschaftsforschung dazu beitragen können, Wissenschaft als sozialen Prozess zu analysieren. Es wird deutlich, dass demokratische Einflussnahme auf Forschung nicht nur möglich, sondern geradezu notwendig ist, um adäquate Ergebnisse zu erzielen.Schließlich wird der Frage nachgegangen, wie eine Wissenschaft beschaffen sein müsste, die ihrer gesellschaftlichen Verantwortung gerecht werden will, ohne ihre Freiheit zur kritischen Analyse aufzugeben.
