Book excerpt: This 10-week study of Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon mines the Wisdom Literature not only for wise principles for living, but also for the wise person these books point to through their drama, poetry, proverb, and song. In her accessible and authentic style, Nancy Guthrie focuses on seeing Jesus in the Old Testament instead of emphasizing works-based moralism. She presents clear commentary and contemporary application of gospel truths, speaking directly to issues such as repentance, submission, happiness, and sexuality. Each weekly lesson includes questions for personal study, a contemporary teaching chapter that emphasizes how the passage fits into the bigger story of redemptive history, a brief section on how the passage uniquely points to what is yet to come at the consummation of Christ's kingdom, and a leader's guide for group discussion.

This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wisdom in Classical and Biblical Tradition begins with the recognition that modern culture emerged from a synthesis of the legacies of ancient Greek civilization and the theological perspectives of the Jewish and Christian scriptures. Part of what made this synthesis possible was a shared outlook: a common aspiration toward wholeness of understanding that refused to separate knowledge from goodness, virtue from happiness, cosmos from polis, and divine authority from human responsibility. This wholeness of understanding, or wisdom, featured prominently in both classical and biblical literatures as an ultimate good. Michael Legaspi has two central aims. The first is to explain in formal terms what wisdom is. Though wisdom involves matters of practical judgment affecting the life of the individual and the community, it has also been identified with an understanding of the world and of the ultimate realities that give meaning to human thought and action. In its traditional form, wisdom was understood to govern intellectual, social, and ethical endeavors. His second aim is to analyze figures and texts that have yielded and shaped the traditional understanding of wisdom. The book examines accounts of wisdom within foundational texts that range from the period of Homer to the destruction of the Second Temple. In doing so, it explains why the search for wisdom remains an important but problematic endeavor today.

Our financial decisions might be guided by "a penny saved is a penny earned," or we might remember not to be lazy from "the early bird catches the worm." God has given us a book filled with such memorable wisdom--the Old Testament book of Proverbs. In Living Well, you'll look at a different topic in each chapter and learn how Proverbs can guide us to live wiser, more God-honoring lives. Whether in our finances or our relationships, our approach to work or play, following the way of wisdom is often countercultural, but always best. Living Well gives us the blueprint for such a life--starting with God's own wisdom from the book of Proverbs.

Book excerpt: Following the success of the megabestselling Black Pearls, a collection of 365 African proverbs that illuminate the secret to peace and joy; and inspire the words of Cudjo Lewis in Zora Neale Hurston’s Barracoon. In Africa, grandparents traditionally share their wisdom about life and culture with their grandchildren, using proverbs and stories that have been passed down from generation to generation. This beautiful keepsake volume includes 365 proverbs—one for each day of the year—partnered with brief, yet profound lessons and knowledge covering all facets of life. Collected from countries across the African continent, these wise proverbs encourage children to treasure community over material items; show kindness to others; love from the heart and not the mind; exercise empathy; and strive for a global education. These thoughtful proverbs include insights such as: Proverb: “Love, like rain, does not choose the grass on which it falls.” (South Africa) Insight: True love is blind. True love is not based on wealth, family, position, education, tribe, religion or class. Love can bind together a most unlikely couple, as the heart has reasons that reason does not understand. Proverb: “When an old man dies, a library burns to the ground.” (Gambia) Insight: The elders of the community hold the wisdom of the world. Devoting a little time, day by day for a full year, this holistic, enriching gift book can lead to inner peace and happiness.

Book excerpt: The Wisdom literature has recently awakened new interest. During the last few decades a steady stream of new scholarly works on the subject have appeared. Still, a comprehensive study on the concept of God in this type of literature is lacking. In the present work, the author attempts to fill this need by giving a more detailed account of the way God is portrayed in the book of Proverbs. After an introductory chapter, the first part of the book discusses the concepts of creation, world order and retribution which are found in the Wisdom literature and attempts to describe how God was regarded by the sages as involved both in the natural world and the realm of human affairs. The second part of the book examines the way God is referred to as, on the one hand, a transcedent being and sovereign Lord and, on the other hand, as a deity who relates intimately to man and is deeply involved in the world. - Publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the source of Wisdom? What, in fact, is the biblical understanding of Wisdom? And how is Wisdom revealed? In God's Twilight Zone, T. A. Perry has brought his creative impulse and critical mind to some of the most enigmatic passages of the Hebrew Bible. Instead of confining his study to the so-called "Wisdom literature" genre, Perry proceeds based on the assumption that Wisdom can be found strategically throughout the Hebrew Bible, often in poorly understood passages that seem out of place within their wider context. Perry provides serious students with an insightful and incisive lens through which to interpret, among other biblical passages, the story of Judah and Tamar, the riddle proposed by Samson, and the words of Qohelet (Ecclesiastes) reflecting on the advancing years of life. Solomon's genius in the tale of the two mothers, Perry demonstrates, is not in ascertaining the true mother, but in understanding the Wisdom of preserving life. Through this thoughtful study, the reader will see that God's Wisdom is profound and sometimes viewed best in the murky light of the twilight zone at the start and end of a day.

Book excerpt: “A marvelously wise and expansive book. . . . Ferry writes with warmth, wit, and energy; one could call his prose conversational, but it’s rare to have a conversation quite this wonderful.” — Boston Globe A fascinating journey through Greek mythology that explains the myths' timeless lessons and meaning Heroes, gods, and mortals. The Greek myths are the founding narratives of Western civilization: to understand them is to know the origins of philosophy, literature, art, science, law, and more. Indeed, as Luc Ferry shows in this masterful book, they remain a great store of wisdom, as relevant to our lives today as ever before. No mere legends or clichés ("Herculean task," "Pandora's box," "Achilles heel," etc.), these classic stories offer profound and manifold lessons, providing the first sustained attempt to answer fundamental human questions concerning "the good life," the burden of mortality, and how to find one's place in the world. Vividly retelling the great tales of mythology and illuminating fresh new ways of understanding them, The Wisdom of the Myths will enlighten readers of all ages.

Book excerpt: The last fifty years have seen a dramatic increase of interest in the wisdom literature of the Bible, as scholars have come to appreciate the subtlety and originality of Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes as well as of Sirach and Wisdom of Solomon. Interest has likewise grown in the wisdom literatures of the neighboring cultures of Canaan, Egypt, and especially Mesopotamia. To help readers understand the place of biblical wisdom within this broader context, including its originality and distinctiveness, this volume offers a collection of essays by Assyriologists and biblicists on the social, intellectual, and literary setting of Mesopotamian wisdom; on specific wisdom texts; and on key themes common to both Mesopotamian and biblical culture. --From publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Richard J. Clifford seeks to make the biblical wisdom literature intelligible to modern readers. It is easy to quote the occasional proverb, say a few things about "the problem of evil" in Job, or quote "vanity of vanities, " but far more rewarding to read the whole book with an appreciative and informed eye. Opening chapters of The Wisdom Literature comment on the striking similarities between ancient and modern "wisdom literature" and on the comparable literature from ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Canaan. Thereafter, a chapter is devoted to each biblical wisdom book (Proverbs, Job, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, Sirach, and Wisdom of Solomon), studying not only its content but also its rhetoric -- how it engages the reader.
