Parallel entwickelt sich in der Fachphilosophie eine Tendenz zu "angewandter Ethik" bzw. Bindestrich-Ethiken, die jedoch von den methodischen Leitgedanken des Ansatzes der Integrativen Wirtschaftsethik lange Zeit nur sporadisch Notiz nahmen. Das hat sich geändert, seit jüngere Fachphilosophen an einer "praktischen Wende" der Diskursethik arbeiten. Im Rahmen der jährlich durchgeführten "St. Galler Forschungsgespräche" bot sich im Frühjahr 2003 die Gelegenheit, das Verhältnis von praktisch gewendeter Diskursethik und integrativer Wirtschaftsethik eingehend zu diskutieren. Einbezogen in den interdisziplinären Diskurs wurden auch Ökonomen, die an einer Erneuerung der Tradition einer (kritischen) Politischen Ökonomie interessiert sind, sowie ein diskursethisch und politisch-philosophisch orientierter Staatsrechtler. Der vorliegende Band präsentiert die inspirierenden Ergebnisse dieses Diskurses. Er enthält Beiträge von Karl-Heinz Brodbeck, Holger Burckhart, Matthias Kettner, Philippe Mastronardi, Marcel Niquet, Hans-Balz Peter, Olaf J. Schumann, Andreas Suchanek, Peter Ulrich und Micha H. The fact that utopias, with their ideas of an idealized target society, are not compatible with the basic features of an Open Society was already pointed out by Karl Popper in his book 'Die Offene Gesellschaft und ihre Feinde' (The Open Society and its Enemies) under the impression of National Socialism and Stalinism. In the present book, further forms of Closed Societies and the principal similarities (and differences) of their construction are examined. This is done by drawing on Ralf Dahrendorf's concept of life chances, in which he deals with the interaction of options and ligatures. The ambivalence of Dahrendorf's understanding of ligatures, since they restrict options on the one hand, but also give them meaning on the other, is resolved by a threefold differentiation: into ethical and moral, internally and externally directed, and explicit and implicit ligatures. While the former are capable of enabling life chances, the latter tend to limit them. Based on this, the authors elaborate on the landscape (side) consequences of various closed societies and how ill-suited they are for dealing with current challenges.

Such prominent theoreticians as J. Habermas, J. Rawls, D. Gauthier or R. Rorty hold the view that the citizens of a modern society must exhibit additional anthropological qualities which are termed moral surpluses here. Christoph Lutge argues, however, that no moral surplus is immune to erosion by systematic counter-incentives and that anthropological qualities in general cannot serve as a basis for ethics in the globalized world. An order ethics, which is based on weaker prerequisites, namely the characteristics of situations and their basic conditions (orders), is more likely to count on cross-cultural approval in the era of globalization.
