Following a brief review of the most widespread form of civil infrastructure inspection -- visual inspection -- the thesis describes the anatomy, mechanisms, and types of fiber optic sensors and characterizes the tradeoffs involved in choosing between fiber-optic and conventional sensor technologies. The thesis then presents a survey of contributions to this field, followed by a discussion of deployed applications of fiber-optic sensors, many of them in North America. The latter portion of the thesis first briefly discusses the emerging technology of wireless sensor networks and then presents an abbreviated case study comparing the costs and time required to deploy a fiber optic system to traditional visual inspection on the same structure. The case study suggests that the fiber optic sensors are a cost-effective technology, particularly when indirect savings are considered. The thesis concludes with some comments on the prospects and challenges for sensor technologies in civil infrastructure monitoring.

Book excerpt: Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) for Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) applications can provide the data collection necessary for rapid structural assessment after an event such as a natural disaster puts the reliability of civil infrastructure in question. Unfortunately, there are many technical challenges associated with employing such a WSN in civil infrastructure for operation over multiple decades with maintenance costs low enough to justify the integration of such a WSN into a given structure. The technical challenges include ensuring power is maintained at the sensor nodes, reducing installation and maintenance costs, and automating the collection and analysis of data provided by a wireless sensor network. In this work a new WSN paradigm to address these challenges is presented. The new WSN paradigm is called the "mobile host" WSN. In a mobile host WSN, the sensor nodes are placed on the structure with no internal electrical power source. Instead the node is equipped with hardware to collect energy delivered to it wirelessly by a mobile host on an as-needed basis in order to perform its intended data acquisition and interrogation functions. When an event of interest occurs which might compromise the integrity of the structure, the sensor nodes capture relevant data from the event. In order to collect the data captured by the sensor network, a "mobile host" is sent to each sensor node and wirelessly charges it up. Once the sensor node is fully charged, it turns on and transmits its data wirelessly to the mobile host. The mobile host receives and stores the data and then implements appropriate structural health monitoring (SHM) data interrogation algorithms. If deemed necessary the mobile host then proceeds to interrogate other sensor nodes of interest on the structure. In this way a remote system is presented that can then be used to make a health assessment of the structure. This dissertation addresses the research challenges encountered when implementing a mobile host Won. A sensor node (THINNER) capable of collecting data tirelessly in the absence of electrical power was developed. A peak displacement and bolted joint p reload sensor capable of interfacing with the THINNER sensor node were designed and implemented. A wireless energy delivery package capable of being carried by an airborne mobile host was developed. Lastly, the system engineering required to implement the overall sensor network was carried out. The culmination of this work resulted in the first field demonstration of a mobile host wireless sensor network. The field demonstration took place on an out-of-service, full-scale bridge near Truth-or-Consequences, New Mexico.

Book excerpt: Wireless Smart Sensor Networks (WSSNs) facilitates a new paradigm to structural identification and monitoring for civil infrastructure. Conventionally, wired sensors and central data acquisition systems have been used to characterize the state of the structure, which is quite challenging due to difficulties in cabling, long setup time, and high equipment and maintenance costs. WSSNs offer a unique opportunity to overcome such difficulties. Recent advances in sensor technology have realized low-cost, smart sensors with on-board computation and wireless communication capabilities, making deployment of a dense array of sensors on large civil structures both feasible and economical. However, as opposed to wired sensor networks in which centralized data acquisition and processing are common practice, WSSNs require decentralized algorithms due to the limitation associated with wireless communication; to date such algorithms are limited. This research develops new decentralized algorithms for structural identification and monitoring of civil infrastructure. To increase performance, flexibility, and versatility of the WSSN, the following issues are considered specifically: (1) decentralized modal analysis, (2) efficient decentralized system identification in the WSSN, and (3) multimetric sensing. Numerical simulation and laboratory testing are conducted to verify the efficacy of the proposed approaches. The performance of the decentralized approaches and their software implementations are validated through full-scale applications at the Irwin Indoor Practice Field in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and the Jindo Bridge, a 484 meter-long cable-stayed bridge located in South Korea. This research provides a strong foundation on which to further develop long-term monitoring employing a dense array of smart sensors. The software developed in this research is opensource and is available at: http://shm.cs.uiuc.edu/.
