Book excerpt: Beneath the original Venetian glass and rosewood case at La Specola in Florence lies Clemente Susini's Anatomical Venus (c. 1790), a perfect object whose luxuriously bizarre existence challenges belief. It - or, better, she - was conceived of as a means to teach human anatomy without need for constant dissection, which was messy, ethically fraught and subject to quick decay. This life-sized wax woman is adorned with glass eyes and human hair and can be dismembered into dozens of parts revealing, at the final remove, a beatific foetus curled in her womb. Sister models soon appeared throughout Europe, where they not only instructed the specialist students, but also delighted the general public. Deftly crafted dissectable female wax models and slashed beauties of the world's anatomy museums and fairgrounds of the 18th and 19th centuries take centre stage in this disquieting volume. Since their creation in late 18th-century Florence, these wax women have seduced, intrigued and amazed. Today, they also confound, troubling the edges of our neat categorical divides: life and death, science and art, body and soul, effigy and pedagogy, spectacle and education, kitsch and art. Incisive commentary and captivating imagery reveal the evolution of these enigmatic sculptures from wax effigy to fetish figure and the embodiment of the uncanny.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of the most well-known and trusted relationship book of all time returns with an updated guide for today's generation. Two decades ago, Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus revolutionized the way we thought about love and partnership. John Gray's work has helped countless readers improve and even save their relationships. But as society evolves, relationships do, too. It's time to move beyond Mars and Venus, toward a new relationship model for modern couples. Today, men and women are no longer trapped by rigid societal roles. Now more than ever, we have the freedom to be our authentic selves. Women can access their masculine side, and men can embrace their feminine side. This new freedom is a good thing, but it also brings new challenges. Men and women still need the right tools and skills to help build stronger relation- ships. While previous generations sought "role mate" relationships, based on the more rigid gender roles of the time, today's couples need a new kind of relationship: a "soul mate" relationship. These more emotionally satisfying relationships require a deeper understanding of our partners' individual needs. In Beyond Mars and Venus, Gray teaches you how to strengthen your bond and grow in love together, so you and your loved one can meet each other's needs in the best way possible, bringing you lasting happiness and a fulfilling partnership.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines two main topics, namely, Wireless Networking and Mobile Data Management. It is designed around a course the author began teaching to senior undergraduate and master’s students at the Department of Computer Science & Engineering of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. The first part of the book, consisting of eight chapters, including the introduction, focuses exclusively on wireless networking aspects. It begins with cellular communication systems, which provided the foundation of wireless networking principles. Three subsequent chapters are devoted to the Global System for Mobile communication (GSM), Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN), Bluetooth, infrared (IR), ZigBee and 6LoWPAN protocols. There is also a chapter on routings in ad hoc networks, an area that is currently being intensively researched due to its potential applications in areas of vehicular network, traffic management, tactical and military systems. Furthermore, the book discusses mobile operating systems and wireless network application level protocols such as Wireless Application Protocols (WAP), Mobile IP and Mosh. The second part highlights mobile data management. It addresses the issues like location management, the importance of replication and caching in mobile environments, the concept of broadcast disk and indexing in air, storage systems for sharing data in mobile environments, and building smart environments. Given that the design of algorithms is the key to applications in data management; this part begins with a chapter on the type of paradigm shift that has been introduced in the design of algorithms, especially due to asymmetry in mobile environments. Lastly, the closing chapter of the book explores smart environments, showing the readers how wireless technology and mobile data management can be combined to provide optimum comfort for human life. Though the book has been structured as a monograph, it can be used both as a textbook and as a reference material for researchers and developers working in the area.

Book excerpt: In 2017, the new journal Internet Histories was founded. As part of the process of defining a new field, the journal editors approached leading scholars in this dynamic, interdisciplinary area. This book is thus a collection of eighteen short thought-provoking pieces, inviting discussion about Internet histories. They raise and suggest current and future issues in the scholarship, as well as exploring the challenges, opportunities, and tensions that underpin the research terrain. The book explores cultural, political, social, economic, and industrial dynamics, all part of a distinctive historiographical and theoretical approach which underpins this emerging field. The international specialists reflect upon the scholarly scene, laying out the field’s research successes to date, as well as suggest the future possibilities that lie ahead in the field of Internet histories. While the emphasis is on researcher perspectives, interviews with leading luminaries of the Internet’s development are also provided. As histories of the Internet become increasingly important, Internet Histories is a useful roadmap for those contemplating how we can write such works. One cannot write many histories of the 1990s or later without thinking of digital media – and we hope that Internet Histories will be an invaluable resource for such studies. This book was originally published as the first issue of the Internet Histories journal.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless networking's most apparent benefit is its portability. Users of wireless networks may simply join preexisting networks and then move freely between them. A mobile phone user may cover great distances while talking on the phone due to the interconnected network of cell towers. Mobile phone service was quite costly in its early stages. It was only affordable for highly mobile individuals like sales managers and key executive decision-makers who needed to be accessed instantly from wherever. Information in wireless networks may be sent between nodes without the need for a direct wired connection. Radio waves are commonly referred to as "radio carriers" due to their common use in this context. It is possible to precisely retrieve the sent data by superimposing it on the radio signal. The radio signal-occupies more than one frequency once data is superimposed (modulated) onto radio carrier, and this is because the frequency or somehow bit rate of modulating information adds to carrier. When radio waves are broadcast on distinct frequencies, several radio carriers may coexist in the same area without interfering with one another. In order to pick up signals, a radio receiver focuses on a certain frequency while ignoring all others. iv After receiving a modulated signal, it must be demodulated before data can be read from it.

Book excerpt: What happens when the biggest R&B superstar goes online for romance? The desire to find true love and be loved for who you really are is universal for men and women, even when you're one of the biggest R&B superstars in the world who is constantly controlled by the Mafia. For DLove, his real desire is to divorce the mob and marry a beautiful, ordinary New York woman who understands him and his world. When he goes online anonymously to find his match, he falls in love with his dream girl who thinks he's someone else. He realizes his life is riddled with Catch-22's, from women loving him for what he is rather than who he is to the Mafia giving him his start and his relentless quest to be free of them. As the mob continually comes to his aid when his younger cousin gets kidnapped and an ex-bodyguard threatens to write and publish a tell-all book about him, his dreams of leaving his Mafia allegiances behind are dashed when they make him an accessory to murder - ensuring their hold on D and his career. As the insanity unfolds D fights to rise above it all and surrenders only to love. Love.Com is Book Three in a series of four. Growing up in the streets of NYC, D knows the mafia would kill you just on principal. Add money to that equation and you're dead meat. Knowing the risks, D used the mob to get a leg up in the music business early in his career. Now years later as an R&B star, he cannot seem to break those ties. The more he tries to separate himself, the tighter a squeeze they put on him. Anthony Arena is the mafia soldier that has his deadly grasp on D. He uses extortion and murder to cement the relationship and D feels stuck with his earlier choices in life. All though his life feels like a dead end, he still believes in love. Victoria is the woman who captures D's heart when he goes online anonymously looking for the girl of his dreams. The antics of her two best friends and crack-head brother spin comedy and tragedy into the mix. As sex, drugs, extortion and murder play out all around D and his online sweetheart the one thing they both believe in stands strong. Their trials and tribulations prove that love is the most powerful force on earth and even stronger than the Mafia ties that bind.
