Book excerpt: This book will present information on sensors and the applications in which they can be used, as well as an introduction to Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing. The notion of tiny instruments and their use as sensors is presented to the readers. The following chapters provide an explanation of the architecture of the Internet of Things (IoT), in addition to offering remarks on the installation, demonstration, and other challenges associated with loT systems. The book delves further into the subject matter by discussing topics such as sensor-cloud infrastructure, mobile cloud, fog computing (an extension of cloud computing that brings cloud computing to the forefront of networking where data is created), and the integration of Internet of Things devices with cloud computing. In addition to that, it includes some remarks on the classification of fog-computing systems. This book has chapters that give ordinary readers and students of computer science with critical knowledge that will allow them to comprehend the fundamentals of cloud computing networks, as well as ideas and applications linked to cloud computing. The term "Internet of Things" (IOT) refers to both real and virtual things that have their own distinct identifiers and are linked to the internet. These objects are used to power "smarter" applications in a variety of industries, including energy, logistics, industrial control, retail, and agriculture. The Internet of Things (IoT) is a new revolution of the Internet that is fast gaining pace driven by the developments in sensor networks, mobile devices, wireless communications, networking, and cloud technologies.
Book Synopsis Conditional Cash Transfers by : Ariel Fiszbein
Download or read book Conditional Cash Transfers written by Ariel Fiszbein and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2009-02-09 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) programs aim to reduce poverty by making welfare programs conditional upon the receivers' actions. That is, the government only transfers the money to persons who meet certain criteria. These criteria may include enrolling children into public schools, getting regular check-ups at the doctor's office, receiving vaccinations, or the like. They have been hailed as a way of reducing inequality and helping households break out of a vicious cycle whereby poverty is transmitted from one generation to another. Do these and other claims make sense? Are they supported by the available empirical evidence? This volume seeks to answer these and other related questions. Specifically, it lays out a conceptual framework for thinking about the economic rationale for CCTs; it reviews the very rich evidence that has accumulated on CCTs; it discusses how the conceptual framework and the evidence on impacts should inform the design of CCT programs in practice; and it discusses how CCTs fit in the context of broader social policies. The authors show that there is considerable evidence that CCTs have improved the lives of poor people and argue that conditional cash transfers have been an effective way of redistributing income to the poor. They also recognize that even the best-designed and managed CCT cannot fulfill all of the needs of a comprehensive social protection system. They therefore need to be complemented with other interventions, such as workfare or employment programs, and social pensions.

Book Synopsis Trade-based Money Laundering by : Ashleigh Young
Download or read book Trade-based Money Laundering written by Ashleigh Young and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade-based money laundering (TBML) involves the exploitation of the international trade system for the purpose of transferring value and obscuring the true origins of illicit wealth. TBML schemes vary in complexity but typically involve misrepresentation of the price, quantity, or quality of imports or exports. Financial institutions may wittingly or unwittingly be implicated in TBML schemes when such institutions are used to settle, facilitate, or finance international trade transactions (e.g., through the processing of wire transfers, provision of trade finance, and issuance of letters of credit and guarantees). TBML activity is considered to be growing in both volume and global reach. Although TBML is widely recognised as one of the most common manifestations of international money laundering, TBML appears to be less understood among academics and policymakers than traditional forms of money laundering through the international banking system and bulk cash smuggling. This book discusses the scope of the TBML problem and analyses selected U.S. government policy responses to address TBML. It includes a listing of hearings in the 114th Congress that addressed TBML.
