Book Synopsis Princes, Patronage, and the Nobility by : Ronald G. Asch
Download or read book Princes, Patronage, and the Nobility written by Ronald G. Asch and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1991 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a comparative perspective, this volume studies the court as a crucial center of government and politics, as well as the dominant focus for the ruling elites. The essays explore how the early modern court gradually developed from the medieval royal household to its very different form in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Comparing England, Germany, France, Spain as well as the Netherlands and Italy, the editors find that several common themes emerge: the problem of integrating a number of often vastly different provinces and principalities through the attraction of a court; the capital city's function as the basis of the court and as its rival; the role of the Court during the great religious conflicts of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; and the court as an instrument for domesticating the nobility and a stronghold of aristocratic influence.

Book Synopsis Power of the Weak by : Jennifer Carpenter
Download or read book Power of the Weak written by Jennifer Carpenter and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering the eleventh through sixteenth centuries, these essays suggest that influence and power may have paradoxically been available to women despite, and sometimes precisely because of, their subordinate position in society. Striking for its range of scholarship, this collection explores the power and independence, relationships and influence of medieval queens, holy women, mothers, widows, Jewish conversas, and others. Latin and Anglo-Norman hagiography, confessors' manuals, coronation rituals, responsa literature, and legal theory are represented. "An intriguing exploration of a basic paradox of medieval society, and an excellent blend of theory and gender studies with detailed work relevant for social and political history." -- Joel Rosenthal, author of Patriarchy and Families of Privilege in Fifteenth-Century England JENNIFER CARPENTER is a lecturer in history at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand.
Book Synopsis German Histories in the Age of Reformations, 1400-1650 by : Thomas A. Brady
Download or read book German Histories in the Age of Reformations, 1400-1650 written by Thomas A. Brady and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-07-13 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book studies the connections between the political reform of the Holy Roman Empire and the German lands around 1500 and the sixteenth-century religious reformations, both Protestant and Catholic. It argues that the character of the political changes (dispersed sovereignty, local autonomy) prevented both a general reformation of the Church before 1520 and a national reformation thereafter. The resulting settlement maintained the public peace through politically structured religious communities (confessions), thereby avoiding further religious strife and fixing the confessions into the Empire's constitution. The Germans' emergence into the modern era as a people having two national religions was the reformation's principal legacy to modern Germany.
Book Synopsis The Counter-Reformation in Central Europe by : Regina Pörtner
Download or read book The Counter-Reformation in Central Europe written by Regina Pörtner and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2001-09-06 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a detailed and scholarly account of religious belief and conflict in the strategically important province of Inner Austria between 1580 and 1630. Regina Pörtner shows how Protestantization in the first half of the sixteenth century was linked to communication with the Protestants of the rest of the Empire, and to the failure of ecclesiastical reform in the church province of Salzburg, of which Styria formed part. The Protestant success of 1578, however, proved deceptive because it lacked constitutional substance, and was defended by an inherently weak union of the Inner Austrian estates. Dr Pörtner analyses the aims, achievements, and shortcomings of the Habsburgs' confessional crusade in Styria, showing how although the progress of Protestantization was reversed, the Counter-Reformation left an ambivalent legacy to the modern Austrian state.

Book Synopsis To Have and to Hold by : Philip L. Reynolds
Download or read book To Have and to Hold written by Philip L. Reynolds and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume analyzes how, why, and when pre-modern Europeans documented their marriages - through property settlements, prenuptial contracts, court testimony, church weddings, and more. The authors consider both the function of documentation in the process of marrying and what the surviving documents say about pre-modern marriage. After analyzing the foundations of Western marriage set by Roman law and Patristic theology, the chapters provide vivid case studies of marital documents and practices in medieval France, England, Iceland, and Ireland, and in Renaissance Florence, Douai, and Geneva.
Book Synopsis Paths of Emancipation by : Pierre Birnbaum
Download or read book Paths of Emancipation written by Pierre Birnbaum and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the nineteenth century, legal barriers to Jewish citizenship were lifted in Europe, enabling organized Jewish communities and individuals to alter radically their relationships with the institutions of the Christian West. In this volume, one of the first to offer a comparative overview of the entry of Jews into state and society, eight leading historians analyze the course of emancipation in Holland, Germany, France, England, the United States, and Italy as well as in Turkey and Russia. The goal is to produce a systematic study of the highly diverse paths to emancipation and to explore their different impacts on Jewish identity, dispositions, and patterns of collective action. Jewish emancipation concerned itself primarily with issues of state and citizenship. Would the liberal and republican values of the Enlightenment guide governments in establishing the terms of Jewish citizenship? How would states react to Jews seeking to become citizens and to remain meaningfully Jewish? The authors examine these issues through discussions of the entry of Jews into the military, the judicial system, business, and academic and professional careers, for example, and through discussions of their assertive political activity. In addition to the editors, the contributors are Geoffrey Alderman, Hans Daalder, Werner E. Mosse, Aron Rodrigue, Dan V. Segre, and Michael Stanislawski. Originally published in 1995. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Book Synopsis The Early Reformation in Europe by : Andrew Pettegree
Download or read book The Early Reformation in Europe written by Andrew Pettegree and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1992-10-08 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the generation that followed Martin Luther's protest the evangelical movement in Europe attracted very different levels of support in different parts of the continent. Whereas in eastern and central Europe the new movement brought a swift transformation of the religious and political landscape, progress elsewhere was more halting: in the Mediterranean lands and western Europe initial enthusiasm for reform failed to bring about the wholesale renovation of society for which evangelicals had hoped. These fascinating contrasts are the main focus of this volume of specially commissioned essays, each of which charts the progress of reform in one country or region of Europe. Written in each case by a leading specialist in the field, they provide a survey based on primary research and a thorough grasp of the vernacular literature. For both scholars and students they will be an invaluable guide to recent debates and literature on the success or failure of the first generation of reform.
Book Synopsis Communal Reformation by : Peter Blickle
Download or read book Communal Reformation written by Peter Blickle and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1992 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Communal Reformation is the most original and provocative book to appear in its field in the past quarter-century. It met with an enthusiastic response, particularly in England and the United States, when first published in Germany in 1985 and is now available in translation. Peter Blickle's groundbreaking study, which is intended for scholars and students interested in the history of pre-modern Europe, the development of Germany, the history of Christianity, and historical sociology, reconstructs the connection between the crisis of rural society at the end of the Middle Ages, the great Peasants' War of 1525, and the reformation as a social movement. Blickle focuses on southern Germany, Switzerland, and Austria in the later Middle Ages and Early Modern eras (roughly 1400 to 1600), though his work has important implications for the social and religious history of Europe as a whole.
