Book excerpt: The Northern Highlands of Mexico is an increasingly important wintering area for populations of Lesser Snow Geese and Ross" Geese that nest in the Western and Central Canadian Arctic. In Mexico, the growing importance of the Northern Highlands as a wintering area for Ross" Geese and the western Central Flyway population of Lesser Snow Geese underscored the need to conduct field observations in that area and prompted the development of a joint effort involving the Mexican Secretaria de Desarrolla Social, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the Canadian Wildlife Service. Some of the objectives were: estimate the number of white geese on the principal wintering areas in the states of Durango and Chihuahua, determine the breeding ground origin of Lesser Snow Goose stocks overwinterin in Mexico, determint ehe incidence and number of Ross' Geese among flocks of white geese, assess the quality and security of white goose wintering habitat, and identify wetland habitats of critical importance to waterfowl.

A number of surveys have been conducted at breeding colonies in recent years to estimate population size and trends. Summarizing the available data, we estimate that approximately 38 000 pairs of Razorbills currently breed in eastern North America. The largest concentrations of Razorbills breed on the Quebec North Shore and in coastal southern Labrador; smaller numbers breed in the Quebec portion of the gulf and estuary of the St. Lawrence River, Maine, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and St. Pierre and Miquelon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this beautifully illustrated guide, two practicing wildlife biologists describe the life histories of forty-five species of ducks, geese, and swans that occur in Texas. For common species and those that breed in the state, each account begins with an interesting fact (such as, “Red-breasted Mergansers have been clocked at over 80 mph, the fastest recorded flight speed for a duck . . .”) and provides information on Texas distribution and harvest, population status, diet, range and habitats, reproduction, and appearance. Exquisite photographs, informative distribution maps, and a helpful source list accompany the species descriptions, and the book offers a glossary and full bibliography for those who want to explore the literature further. With the degradation and disappearance of the inland and coastal habitats that these birds depend upon, the natural history of these waterfowl species provides a vital reminder of the interconnectedness and crucial importance of all wetlands. Birders, biologists, landowners, hunters, outdoor enthusiasts, and all those interested in the health and preservation of our coastal and inland wetland resources will enjoy and learn from this book.

Book excerpt: In 1991, a workshop was held to examine the data related to declines in Canadian amphibian populations and associated causes and, in particular, to develop a protocol to address the issue. Participants were invited to present reports on the current status of knowledge on amphibians in Canada, particularly species that appear to be threatened. Summaries of this information are presented in this report, along with the factors that may be contributing to fluctuations in amphibian populations. Methodologies and tribulations involved in accurately assessing amphibian population size and recruitment are given. A framework for environmental monitoring was presented and the data needed, both intensive and extensive, was discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This best-selling majors ecology book continues to present ecology as a series of problems for readers to critically analyze. No other text presents analytical, quantitative, and statistical ecological information in an equally accessible style. Reflecting the way ecologists actually practice, the book emphasizes the role of experiments in testing ecological ideas and discusses many contemporary and controversial problems related to distribution and abundance. Throughout the book, Krebs thoroughly explains the application of mathematical concepts in ecology while reinforcing these concepts with research references, examples, and interesting end-of-chapter review questions. Thoroughly updated with new examples and references, the book now features a new full-color design and is accompanied by an art CD-ROM for instructors. The field package also includes The Ecology Action Guide, a guide that encourages readers to be environmentally responsible citizens, and a subscription to The Ecology Place (www.ecologyplace.com), a web site and CD-ROM that enables users to become virtual field ecologists by performing experiments such as estimating the number of mice on an imaginary island or restoring prairie land in Iowa.
