Book excerpt: Following the death of his wife, Rachel, Rayleigh Stern spent the next six months in therapy group, trying to find ways to cope. Having lost the love of his life to cancer; he's ready to throw in the towel. Group therapy isn't helping, and he's had enough. Then, on his last group session, he encounters a beautiful young woman waiting to see a drug counselor in the lobby of the office where his group meets. The two become acquainted, and against all his willpower, he begins to fall for the girl despite her young age, sexual orientation, and drug addiction. While romance is not in the cards for the two of them, they miraculously become entwined in something even deeper and more sacred than romantic love. Winifred refers to their relationship and all the ensuing synchronicity in their lives as "God Shots," a concept Rayleigh initially dismisses but later begins to understand. As they discover incredible truths about themselves, their unlikely friendship begins to transform both their lives in ways they could never have imagined.

Young, red-haired, charming, eloquent: how can she help but love him? But David is from a different England - radical and committed to social change. As their confrontation and its consequences inevitably unfold, Mary's life and that of the calm village of Anderby are changed forever.

And why did their family stories matter then and still matter today? This book reveals the remarkable, never-before-told story—based on true events—of Mendez vs. Westminster School District, the California court case that desegregated schools for Latino children and set the stage for Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education at the national level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winifred Holtby, “A Woman In Her Time”: Critical Essays brings together for the first time a range of scholarly perspectives on one of Britain’s best-loved regional authors. Remembered for her vivid portrayal of 1930s rural Yorkshire in her final novel, South Riding (1936) and for her friendship with Vera Brittain, Winifred Holtby (1898-1935) has become a key figure for those interested in British literature, politics, and culture between the wars. Epitomising the professional independence and political passion which we have come to associate with the newly emancipated women of her era, Holtby’s was a life devoted to myriad causes and directed to the pressing issues of her day. With fresh perspectives on Holtby’s better known novels alongside new critical forays into her short stories, drama, journalism, and historical writing, Winifred Holtby, “A Woman In Her Time” sheds new light on a woman who not only spoke out in support of feminism, peace, and racial equality at a time when fascism and war loomed, but who also shared with us her views on a wide spectrum of topical concerns from Virginia Woolf, D.H. Lawrence, H. G. Wells, psychology, spinsters, mothers, and the B.B.C., to her delight in clothes, films, and village gossip.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The biographer Winifred Gerin (1901-81), who wrote the lives of all four Bronte siblings, stumbled on her literary vocation on a visit to Haworth, after a difficult decade following the death of her first husband. On the same visit she met her second husband, a Bronte enthusiast twenty years her junior. Together they turned their backs on London to live within sight of the Parsonage, Gerin believing that full understanding of the Brontes required total immersion in their environment. Gerin's childhood and youth, like the Brontes', was characterised by a cultured home and intense imaginative life shared with her sister and two brothers, and by family tragedies (the loss of two siblings in early life). Strong cultural influences formed the children's imagination: polyglot parents, French history, the Crystal Palace, Old Vic productions. Winifred's years at Newnham College, Cambridge were enlivened by eccentric characters such as the legendary lecturer Quiller-Couch (Q'), Lytton Strachey's sister Pernel and Bloomsbury's favourite philosopher, G.E. Moore. Her happy life in Paris with her Belgian cellist husband, Eugene Gerin, was brought to an abrupt end by the Second World War, in which the couple had many adventures: fleeing occupied Belgium, saving Jews in Nice in Vichy France, escaping through Spain and Portugal to England, where they did secret war work for Political Intelligence near Bletchley. After Eugene's death in 1945 Winifred coped with bereavement through poetry and playwriting until discovering her true literary metier on the trip to Haworth. She also wrote about Elizabeth Gaskell, Anne Thackeray Ritchie and Fanny Burney. The book is based on her letters and on her unpublished memoir.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tranquility, New Jersey’s amateur drama troupe is staging a murder mystery at St. Winifred’s Academy and Alberta Scaglione couldn’t be more thrilled. Even her Italian-American famiglia are getting in on the act. But someone’s making deadly revisions to the script . . . Alberta can hardly believe it. Her childhood screen idol, 1950s Hollywood starlet Missy Michaels, has signed up for the local Tranquility Players revival of the classic Arsenic and Old Lace. But before Missy memorizes a single line, she’s found dead in her dressing room wrapped in lace and clutching a bottle of arsenic. The ultimate drama-queen suicide? Everyone thinks so—except Alberta. A Ferrara woman knows murder when she sees it. Alberta also knows producer Nola Kirkpatrick’s checkered past: whenever she’s around, trouble abounds. Alberta and her crime-reporting partner-in-sleuthing granddaughter, Jinx, have a hunch the murderer is among the Players. So Alberta joins the cast—reluctantly playing Missy’s role—to get closer to the truth. She notices the director is a little unbalanced, but aren’t they all? The leading man is a wildly obsessive Missy Michaels fanboy—but a murderer? Of course, the show must go on. But if Alberta and Jinx can’t nab the killer before opening night, it may mean curtains for more Players . . . including Alberta. Includes Italian recipes from Alberta’s kitchen! “Imagine the Golden Girls starting a detective agency and you’ll get the general idea of J.D. Griffo’s charming Ferrara Family mystery series.” —Criminal Element
