Book excerpt: Even before the publication of the results of the Gottingen experiments on the removal of the boundary layer by suction, experiments with nozzle-slotted wings were begun. A report of those experiments will be given here. Taken collectively, the experiments show that, as regards increasing the lift values, the effect of the air flowing from the nozzle-shaped slots is similar to the effect produced in the case of ordinary slotted wings. The high lift values are attained, however, at the smaller angles of attack employed in ordinary flight.

Book excerpt: The idea of increasing the lift of an aerofoil by subdividing it goes back to gliding flight experiments by the writer before the war. A crash in August, 1917, with a Rumpler C airplane, on account of stalling, caused the idea to be put into concrete form and presented for a patent in 1918. The patent claim reads: "Supporting surface characterized by its being divided into a number of tandem components which together form a wing section." The application was at first rejected because the patent office did not believe in the possibility of increasing the lift by dividing the wing. The issuing patent was made dependent on conclusive proof of such increase.

Slot spoilers are believed to have advantages over flap-type direct lift control (DLC) systems because of the small amount of power required for actuation. These tests, run at a Reynolds number of 1,400,000 showed that up to 78 percent of the lift due to flap deflection could be spoiled by opening several spanwise slots within the flaps. For a given lift change the drag change was significantly less than that which would be obtained by a variable flap DLC system. A nozzle-shaped slot was the most effective of the slot shapes tested.
