Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English This is a raw and pragmatic story book of poems in English and Tongan. It is not a critique of where I have been or of those I have been lucky to meet. It is not a literary work demonstrating poetic acumen. It is merely a chronicle of the thought flashes in response to life situations. These are just snippets of the demons and angels that keep this overseas student learning from day to day without being absorbed into host norms while in diaspora. Its the fluctuations to stay afloat and faithful to ones birth and heritage. They have been recorded between books, laughter, and tears. Some of the experiences were frustrating and some choices tormenting. But in the end, there were always challenges, learning and good times. The poems were conceived out of life that now seems too foreign to be me. It is now delivered to all those who made that portion of my life, and to the students who will continue to leave home to seek education in a foreign environment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faa‘imata represents the traditional home of Kava, a significant figure and source of Tongan culture. Thus, as in the legend of the origin of Kava, Faa‘imata connotes a place where great sacrifices have been laid to honour authority and yet also where kingly favours have been granted that covered shortcomings and inadequacies. More significantly, it marks a place where new beginnings and new legacies can sprout. Therefore the Road to Faa‘imata represents the many facets and multiple interpretations of the pathways and passages traversed by each of the Tonga High School ex-student featured. It represents an equalizer of sorts where students coming from diverse backgrounds and stations in society are provided with empowering opportunities to achieve outcomes that benefit Tonga, reflecting their capacity to absorb, critique and reapply what they have learnt.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-established association of Romanticism with youth has resulted in the early poems of the Lake Poets being considered the most significant. Tim Fulford challenges the tendency to overlook the later poetry of no longer youthful poets, which has had the result of neglecting the Wordsworth, Coleridge and Southey of the 1820s and leaving unexamined the three poets' rise to popularity in the 1830s and 1840s. He offers a fresh perspective on the Lake Poets as professional writers shaping long careers through new work, as well as the republication of their early successes. The theme of lateness, incorporating revision, recollection, age and loss, is examined within contexts including gender, visual art, and the commercial book market. Fulford investigates the Lake Poets' later poems for their impact now, while also exploring their historical effects in their own time and counting the costs of their omission from Romanticism.

Book excerpt: Captain James Cook’s first two voyages of exploration, in 1768-71 and 1772-75, had drawn the modern map of the South Pacific Ocean and had opened the door on the discovery of Antarctica. These expeditions were the subject of Volumes I and II of this edition of Cook’s Journals. The third voyage, on which Cook sailed in 1776, was directed to the Northern Hemisphere. Sailing north from Tahiti in 1778, Cook made the first recorded discovery of the Hawaiian Islands. On March 7 he sighted the Oregon coast in 44° N. The remarkable voyage which he made northward along the Canadian and Alaskan coasts and through Bering Strait to his farthest north in 70° nearly disproved the existence of a navigable passage towards the Atlantic and produced charts of impressive accuracy. Returning to Hawaii to refit, Cook met his death in a clash with the natives as tragic as it seems unnecessary. The volume and vitality of the records, both textual and graphic, for this voyage surpass those even for Cook’s second voyage. Dr Beaglehole prints the full text of Cook’s own holograph journals, followed by those of Captains Clerke and King for the course of the voyage after Cook’s death. This is a facsimile reprint of the edition published in 1967. For the print-on-demand edition, the illustrations originally in colour are reproduced in black-and-white, the fold-outs divided to fit on separate pages, and the volume itself split into two parts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author is such a grand title and one for which I do not feel at all worthy. Instead, I would consider myself an adventurer with a pen and notebook. My adventurous spirit started way back when I was just seven years old and found myself plonked on the back of a rather large pony called Dawn. I had pestered my parents for horse-riding lessons, and now I sat shivering with fear and contemplating the sanity of my demands. As a shy, reticent, little girl, I did not have the courage to say actually I do not like this. So week after week, month after month, little by little, I lost my fear, and an adventurous spirit was born with me. Of course, horse riding has little to do with sailing, but for me, the experience of the former gave me the courage for the latter. Riding an unpredictable, frisky, jumpy mare has many parallels to sailing an unpredictable, frisky, jumpy yacht. Believe me when I tell you a yacht has a mind of its own. Sailing fi rst entered my life in my teens when I had the privilege to crew on the Th ames sailing barge Th alatta. In my twenties, I became a deck monkey on friends yachts and enjoyed the thrill of racing in the Solent on the south coast of England. I gained my Competent Crew certifi cate whilst taking part in the Baltic leg of the Tall Ships Race. Working as a secretary for the army at the time, I was invited to join the crew on Sail Training Yacht British Soldier, a magnifi cent 55-foot Camper & Nicholson. I briefl y co-owned a small day-sailor Pindari and cut my teeth on the perils of crossing the busiest shipping lane in the world, the English Channel. Sailing took a back seat in my early forties when I was gripped by the travelling bug. I had Australia in my sights, and I spent many a happy month soaking up the sights, sounds, and sheer vastness of that wonderful continent.I realised then that the world has a lot more to off er me. Yearning for more, I was a great believer in the saying a change is as good as a rest. I had been a secretary, a personal assistant, a hairdresser, and a professional tennis coach and have recently qualifi ed as an approved driving instructor. I was a highly profi cient horse rider, a crazy snow skier, a scuba-diver, and a tennis player. What more could I possibly achieve? Well, I have just added to that list a circumnavigator.
