Download or read book Winding Around written by John Roe and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2015-09-03 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The winding number is one of the most basic invariants in topology. It measures the number of times a moving point P goes around a fixed point Q, provided that P travels on a path that never goes through Q and that the final position of P is the same as its starting position. This simple idea has far-reaching applications. The reader of this book will learn how the winding number can help us show that every polynomial equation has a root (the fundamental theorem of algebra),guarantee a fair division of three objects in space by a single planar cut (the ham sandwich theorem),explain why every simple closed curve has an inside and an outside (the Jordan curve theorem),relate calculus to curvature and the singularities of vector fields (the Hopf index theorem),allow one to subtract infinity from infinity and get a finite answer (Toeplitz operators),generalize to give a fundamental and beautiful insight into the topology of matrix groups (the Bott periodicity theorem). All these subjects and more are developed starting only from mathematics that is common in final-year undergraduate courses.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications COMPUTER AIDED PROOFS IN ANALYSIS is based on the proceedings of an IMA Participating Institutions (PI) Conference held at the University of Cincinnati in April 1989. Each year the 19 Participating Institutions select, through a competitive process, several conferences proposals from the PIs, for partial funding. This conference brought together leading figures in a number of fields who were interested in finding exact answers to problems in analysis through computer methods. We thank Kenneth Meyer and Dieter Schmidt for organizing the meeting and editing the proceedings. A vner Friedman Willard Miller, Jr. PREFACE Since the dawn of the computer revolution the vast majority of scientific compu tation has dealt with finding approximate solutions of equations. However, during this time there has been a small cadre seeking precise solutions of equations and rigorous proofs of mathematical results. For example, number theory and combina torics have a long history of computer-assisted proofs; such methods are now well established in these fields. In analysis the use of computers to obtain exact results has been fragmented into several schools.

Book Synopsis Supermathematics and its Applications in Statistical Physics by : Franz Wegner
Download or read book Supermathematics and its Applications in Statistical Physics written by Franz Wegner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-25 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text presents the mathematical concepts of Grassmann variables and the method of supersymmetry to a broad audience of physicists interested in applying these tools to disordered and critical systems, as well as related topics in statistical physics. Based on many courses and seminars held by the author, one of the pioneers in this field, the reader is given a systematic and tutorial introduction to the subject matter. The algebra and analysis of Grassmann variables is presented in part I. The mathematics of these variables is applied to a random matrix model, path integrals for fermions, dimer models and the Ising model in two dimensions. Supermathematics - the use of commuting and anticommuting variables on an equal footing - is the subject of part II. The properties of supervectors and supermatrices, which contain both commuting and Grassmann components, are treated in great detail, including the derivation of integral theorems. In part III, supersymmetric physical models are considered. While supersymmetry was first introduced in elementary particle physics as exact symmetry between bosons and fermions, the formal introduction of anticommuting spacetime components, can be extended to problems of statistical physics, and, since it connects states with equal energies, has also found its way into quantum mechanics. Several models are considered in the applications, after which the representation of the random matrix model by the nonlinear sigma-model, the determination of the density of states and the level correlation are derived. Eventually, the mobility edge behavior is discussed and a short account of the ten symmetry classes of disorder, two-dimensional disordered models, and superbosonization is given.
Book Synopsis Lectures On Quantum Computing, Thermodynamics And Statistical Physics by : Shu Tanaka
Download or read book Lectures On Quantum Computing, Thermodynamics And Statistical Physics written by Shu Tanaka and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2012-09-17 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of lecture notes from the Symposium on Quantum Computing, Thermodynamics, and Statistical Physics, held at Kinki University in March 2012. Quantum information theory has a deep connection with statistical physics and thermodynamics. This volume introduces some of the topics on interface among the mentioned fields. Subjects included in the lecture notes include quantum annealing method, nonequilibrium thermodynamics and spin glass theory, among others. These subjects were presented with much emphasis put in its relevance in quantum information theory. These lecture notes are prepared in a self-contained manner so that a reader with modest background may understand the subjects.
