Book excerpt: Crossing the wide realms of the Faerûn in search of adventure, the dark elf princess Liriel Baenre and her companion Fyodor find themselves in the barbarian’s homeland of Rashemen. In a land ruled by witches, Liriel must disguise herself lest she spark the people’s hatred of dark elves. Yet from the deep tunnels of the Underdark, eyes glittering with malice are watching her every move, preparing for vengeance. “…When [Elaine Cunningham] writes about the Forgotten Realms, she can see inside my head, somehow, and capture things the way I imagine them. Book excerpt: The saga of frontier mountain man Titus Bass was first chronicled by author Terry C. Johnston in the bestselling trilogy Carry the Wind, Borderlords, and One-Eyed Dream. In Dance on the Wind, Buffalo Palace, and Crack in the Sky, Johnston set down the stirring adventures of Bass's early life. Now the unforgettable epic concludes with the story of this legendary hero's autumn years that was begun in Ride the Moon Down and Death Rattle. In this breathtaking climax, Bass, the hardy survivor of a world now gone, prepares to fight his magnificent final battle. Fleeing the bloody aftermath of the Taos Rebellion, Titus Bass leads his family north, hoping to winter with the Crow people. But wagons filled with overland emigrants in search of new homes have already begun to trek across the vast untamed frontier. The wild and free world of the mountain men is quickly fading into the past. Even the famous Jim Bridger, whose trading post sits on the emigrants' Oregon Trail, must contend with arriving Mormons under Brigham Young, who view the region as their Promised Land to be cleansed of all nonbelievers. For Titus Bass, the journey north is sadly eventful. He must save an old friend from death and rescue his daughter Magpie from cutthroat traders. He must find a way to free a wagon train of innocents from its unscrupulous leader, his murderous assistant, and the band of violent toughs who enforce the leader's will. Most important of all, Bass must come to terms with his long-lost daughter Amanda, bound with her husband and children for a new home ... in a faraway land that Bass himself will never see. When Bass eventually arrives in the land of the Crow, he finds old friends -- and old ways -- dying out. Determined to live out his final years in peace, Bass soon comes to realize that even on the changing frontier, enemies lie in wait, old dangers lurk, and survival is never a certain thing. But still to come is the greatest lesson of all -- that dearer by far than his own life are the lives of his friends and loved ones.

Book excerpt: At six years of age, the orphaned Windwalker, a.k.a., "Walker", is given to LDS Placement Services by the Navajo Indian tribe to be placed with an adoptive LDS family. In the loving and Christ-centered environment his foster home provides, Walker matures physically, mentally, and spiritually. As the years pass and Walker turns fifteen, he and his foster family anxiously await the necessary tribal consent for his adoption to take place. During this time Walker has a vision in which he sees himself entrusted with the responsibility of getting an urgent message to his people. He is to tell them that they will not become a great nation until they lay down the false traditions of their fathers and take up the true traditions of the ancient ones. As Walker prepares mentally and spiritually for his mission and for the long-awaited adoption, he is unaware of the forces working against him and his family to prevent the adoption. When Walker finds out who is responsible, he puts together a diabolical plan to get revenge. With a hate-filled heart and his vision all but forgotten, he executes his plan and his life spirals out of control. When Walker discovers he is dying, he knows he has reached the point of no return. He is grief-stricken as he realizes that he has failed not only God, but his beloved family and his people. He is afraid there is no hope for him either in this life or in the next so he goes to live alone on a mesa to pray for forgiveness and to await his impending death. Can Walker ever be forgiven for what he has done? Will Walker's urgent message to his people ever be delivered?

Once proud Bison Hunters, they must find another way to live in order to survive. Driven north by drought, they search for a place they can claim as their own. A place where the woodland tribes will not try to enslave or kill them. They reach the shores of Lake Superior, where tales of monsters and evil spirits keep their enemies from settling the apparently barren and cold land. They are the First Americans to claim this new land. The Dream Weavers portrays the life and death struggle of these First Americans while weaving in an abundance of adventure and romance. The novel takes you on a journey of discovery where Wind Walker’s people learn not only to survive but thrive. By canoe they travel along the edge of Lake Superior, where they are the first to discover copper in the Great Lakes Region. They experience the very edge of the continental glaciers north of Isle Royal where they see the last of the Wooly Mammoths grazing on the tundra. The story is set at the beginning of the Archaic period, more than 8000 years ago, before copper was first discovered in the Great Lakes region. The dependence on large animals is all but gone and the use of plants is becoming more important. In this new land they discover an abundance of food, friendly spirits to guide and protect them and most of all copper, the wonderful metal that led to the later development of the Wisconsin Copper Culture. The People struggle to understand the secrets held stubbornly in the raw metal. Only Wind Walker seems able to make the valuable copper tools that give them an advantage over their enemies, an advantage which they must work hard to keep secret.

Through an act of fate, he became friends with an Indian brave called Good Crow. He knew he needed to look for another town with a railroad station so he could return to New York, where he came from. His friend Good Crow offered to guide him, not knowing that a bounty hunter was looking for them. They finally found a railroad station in another town. After saying their goodbyes, Good Crow began making the journey back to the nations when a bounty hunter spotted him and killed him! When Sheffy heard the shot off in the distance, he decided to go back up the trail and check on him. He found him dead! Just then, he outstepped the bounty hunter with his gun pointed at him. By a twist of fate, Sheffy overtook and killed him. After returning to the tribe with the body of Good Crow, Sheffy's spirit was broken. Knowing his fate, he decided to go back to Brentwood and turn himself in. But he had no idea that his Indian friends were planning to sneak in the night and replace the rope with a little longer one so his feet could break the fall and fray the end so it would break--in an attempt to save his life. However, at the last minute, while he was on the platform, the true killer signed an affidavit admitting that he was the real killer. The sheriff tried to stop the hanging, but depressed and with nothing to live for, Sheffy jumped anyway. The rope was replaced, but not quite long enough, but it did break part of the fall, and the frayed end broke as well. Sheffy's neck was cracked, but not enough to break the spine. However, it did paralyze him, making him appear to be dead. An Indian named Looking Glass saw a slight twitch of a finger and told the medicine man. Without drawing attention, they used one of Looking Glass's mirrors from his necklace and cupped their hands with it. They saw a slight fog from his nose! The sheriff let them claim the body because he knew they were Sheffy's only friends. The Indians took his body back with them, knowing there was probably no chance for him to survive.

Book excerpt: In the heart of the ancient desert lies a secret. Not one concealing jewels, treasure, or even an ancient tomb, but an entire people, hidden for a thousand years among the stony buttes and mesas. For sixteen years, Kiva has grown up climbing those buttes, hunting poisonous lizards, and learning to fight with her two older brothers. But all of that is about to change. The Proving Ceremonies are around the corner, and with them comes the pressure to choose a profession befitting a female. But Kiva, an outspoken youth whose mouth lands her in trouble as often as not, has never been one for tradition. Her eyes are ever turned upward, hoping to glimpse one of the deadly four-winged raptors that scour the desert skies. It is upon their backs that the windwalkers ride, keeping watch over her people. But women are strictly forbidden from joining the windwalker sect. What's more, the flying predators are said to kill any female attempting to bond them. With stubborn determination, Kiva formulates a bold plan that is as likely to leave her exiled or dead, as it is to succeed. But this is only the beginning of the dangers she will face. When signs of an ancient enemy appear upon the plains, a threat arises that will soon bury them all in a tomb of sand and stone—unless she can stop it.
