The excellent offshore wind resource and the need to reduce carbon emissions from electricity generation are driving policy to increase offshore wind generation capacity in UK waters. Access and maintenance offshore can be difficult and will be more costly than onshore and availability correspondingly lower and as a result there is a growing interest in wind turbine condition monitoring allowing condition based, rather than responsive or scheduled, maintenance. Existing wind turbine condition monitoring methods, such as vibration analysis and oil debris detection, require expensive sensors. The additional costs can be substantial considering the number of turbines typically deployed in offshore wind farms and in addition, costly expertise is generally required to interpret the results. In contrast, the potential to extend the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) data based analysis approach is considerable and could add real value to the condition monitoring with little or no cost to the wind farm operator. This thesis focuses on wind turbine condition monitoring that utilises exclusively data from SCADA systems. The aim is to detect incipient wind turbine operational faults or failures before they evolve to catastrophic failures, so that preventative maintenance or corrective action can be scheduled in time, hence reducing downtime and potentially preventing wider damage. Useful component condition indicators are derived by comparing incoming operational SCADA data with the results for relevant variables, like component temperature that reflect component condition, derived from relevant models trained on SCADA data from a healthy wind turbine. Incipient failures are identified through anomalous behaviour in the variables of interest manifest in the SCADA data. This approach is first applied to individual wind turbines, but then extended to include other wind turbines operating under similar conditions to derive component condition indicators through inter-machine comparison. This is demonstrated to facilitate significant savings in computational effort and model complexity compared to the repetitive development of individual turbine models. In addition, a real time wind turbine power curve is implemented based on SCADA data, and compared with a reference power curve to identify anomalous behaviour, through minor changes in the power curve, in a timely manner.

Book excerpt: This book describes in detail different types of vibration signals and the signal processing methods, including signal resampling and signal envelope, used for condition monitoring of drivetrains. A special emphasis is placed on wind turbines and on the fact that they work in highly varying operational conditions. The core of the book is devoted to cutting-edge methods used to validate and process vibration data in these conditions. Key case studies, where advanced signal processing methods are used to detect failures of gearboxes and bearings of wind turbines, are described and discussed in detail. Vibration sensors, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition), portable data analyzers and online condition monitoring systems, are also covered. This book offers a timely guide to both researchers and professionals working with wind turbines (but also other machines), and to graduate students willing to extend their knowledge in the field of vibration analysis.

One of the biggest drivers of maintenance cost is unscheduled maintenance due to unexpected failures. Continuous monitoring of wind turbine health using automated failure detection algorithms can improve turbine reliability and reduce maintenance costs by detecting failures before they reach a catastrophic stage and by eliminating unnecessary scheduled maintenance. A SCADA-data based condition monitoring system uses data already collected at the wind turbine controller. It is a cost-effective way to monitor wind turbines for early warning of failures and performance issues. In this paper, we describe our exploration of existing wind turbine SCADA data for development of fault detection and diagnostic techniques for wind turbines. We used a number of measurements to develop anomaly detection algorithms and investigated classification techniques using clustering algorithms and principal components analysis for capturing fault signatures. Anomalous signatures due to a reported gearbox failure are identified from a set of original measurements including rotor speeds and produced power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Maintenance Management of Wind Turbines” considers the main concepts and the state-of-the-art, as well as advances and case studies on this topic. Maintenance is a critical variable in industry in order to reach competitiveness. It is the most important variable, together with operations, in the wind energy industry. Therefore, the correct management of corrective, predictive and preventive politics in any wind turbine is required. The content also considers original research works that focus on content that is complementary to other sub-disciplines, such as economics, finance, marketing, decision and risk analysis, engineering, etc., in the maintenance management of wind turbines. This book focuses on real case studies. These case studies concern topics such as failure detection and diagnosis, fault trees and subdisciplines (e.g., FMECA, FMEA, etc.) Most of them link these topics with financial, schedule, resources, downtimes, etc., in order to increase productivity, profitability, maintainability, reliability, safety, availability, and reduce costs and downtime, etc., in a wind turbine. Advances in mathematics, models, computational techniques, dynamic analysis, etc., are employed in analytics in maintenance management in this book. Finally, the book considers computational techniques, dynamic analysis, probabilistic methods, and mathematical optimization techniques that are expertly blended to support the analysis of multi-criteria decision-making problems with defined constraints and requirements.

Book excerpt: Artificial neural networks possess several properties that make them particularly attractive for applications to modelling and control of complex non-linear systems. Among these properties are their universal approximation ability, their parallel network structure and the availability of on- and off-line learning methods for the interconnection weights. However, dynamic models that contain neural network architectures might be highly non-linear and difficult to analyse as a result. Artificial Neural Networks for Modelling and Control of Non-Linear Systems investigates the subject from a system theoretical point of view. However the mathematical theory that is required from the reader is limited to matrix calculus, basic analysis, differential equations and basic linear system theory. No preliminary knowledge of neural networks is explicitly required. The book presents both classical and novel network architectures and learning algorithms for modelling and control. Topics include non-linear system identification, neural optimal control, top-down model based neural control design and stability analysis of neural control systems. A major contribution of this book is to introduce NLq Theory as an extension towards modern control theory, in order to analyze and synthesize non-linear systems that contain linear together with static non-linear operators that satisfy a sector condition: neural state space control systems are an example. Moreover, it turns out that NLq Theory is unifying with respect to many problems arising in neural networks, systems and control. Examples show that complex non-linear systems can be modelled and controlled within NLq theory, including mastering chaos. The didactic flavor of this book makes it suitable for use as a text for a course on Neural Networks. In addition, researchers and designers will find many important new techniques, in particular NLq emTheory, that have applications in control theory, system theory, circuit theory and Time Series Analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind turbines are becoming more established as an economically viable alternative to fossil-fuelled power generation. Recently wind farms consisting of hundreds of units are being built in various locations around the country adding a significant amount of electrical generating capacity. As the size of wind farms continues to increase, business economics dictate the need for effective condition monitoring systems that allow for careful asset management to minimise downtime and maximise availability and profits. Most modern turbines are built with integrated condition monitoring systems that acquire data and store this through Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Systems. This data quickly becomes unmanageable and brings with it the problems of managing and interpreting it. This thesis considers the development of an automated SCADA data analysis system that aims to interpret the large volumes of data that are generated, with the intention of identifying faults in their early stages before they manifest into more serious catastrophic failures. A number of different analysis techniques for interpreting the SCADA are considered and a methodology of identifying faults in their incipient stages in the gearbox and generator using basic SCADA temperature data is described. Most CM techniques in the research literature focus on one aspect of a wind turbine with regards to identifying faults that may manifest within it. This research also puts forward the development of a multi-agent platform capable of combing multiple data sources and analysis techniques into one system to improve the opportunity of extracting and interpreting interesting information found in the SCADA and present it through a single point of contact for the operator. This provides the possibility of developing a more complete condition monitoring system that can monitor all of the main components of each turbine across a complete wind farm using both, existing and future condition monitoring techniques developed for the interpretation of wind farm data.
