Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Testing rotor blades of wind turbines is essential to mitigate financial risks caused by serial damages. Present day uniaxial dynamic tests are time consuming and often inaccurate regarding the applied loading. This thesis proposes a faster fatigue test method by loading the two primary directions at the same time. In addition, a more realistic test, compared to uniaxial tests, is accomplished by loading larger areas of the blade cross-sections. To achieve this, an elliptical biaxial dynamic excitation is used. To fulfill the industry requirement for cost effective tests, a relatively simple test setup was developed, still achieving an elliptical dynamic excitation of the rotor blade. Two methods for an accurate determination of the applied loadings for dynamic fatigue tests are described. These calibration tests use easily measured values and simple analysis to achieve accurate test load measurements in a cost-effective way.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Study from the year 2018 in the subject Engineering - Mechanical Engineering, grade: 2, , language: English, abstract: Two different blade profiles were investigated for the performance of VAWT rotor. One is two scopped with different overlap ratios and the aspect ratios test under three different sir velocities and the other is the forward curved profiled blades with different inclinations with respect to shaft normal at the aspect ratios of 1 and 2. The present investigation helps in concluding that a two-scoop blades arrangement with H/D = 0,775 and e/d = 0,24 contributes the most favorable value of rotational speed of the rotor at which power coefficient and the torque coefficient can be maximized. While for the forward curved profiled blades the investigation realizes that higher power out of three blade system with curtaining from the combined effect of all the parameter i.e. N, Ω, ξP and ξT provides the higher strength of the power output. Hence, the three-blade system with curtaining is considered as the best out of all the blades tested.

Book excerpt: Fatigue tests were performed on full- and half-scale root end sections, first to qualify the root retention design, and second to induce failure. Test methodology and results are presented. Two operational blades were proof tested to design limit load to ascertain buckling resistance. Measurements of natural frequency, damping ratio, and deflection under load made on the operational blades are documented. The tests showed that all structural design requirements were met or exceeded. Blade loads measured during 3000 hr of field operation were close to those expected. The measured loads validated the loads used in the fatigue tests and gave high confidence in the ability of the blades to achieve design life. Sullivan, T. L. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accurate prediction of wind turbine blade loads and response is important in predicting the fatigue life of wind machines. At the SERI Wind Energy Research Center, a rotor code called FLAP (Force and Loads Analysis Program) is currently being validated by comparing predicted results to machine measurements. The FLAP code has been modified to allow the teetering degrees of freedom. This paper describes these modifications and comparisons of predicted blade bending moments to test measurements. Wind tunnel data for a 1/20th scale model will be used to compare FLAP predictions for the cyclic flap-bending moments at the 33% spanwise station for three different wind speeds. The comparisons will be made for both rigid and teetering hubs. Currently, the FLAP code accounts for deterministic excitations such as wind shear, tower shadow, gravity, and prescribed yawing motions. Conclusions will be made regarding the code's accuracy in predicting the cyclic bending moments.
