This book was released on 1974 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transonic wind-tunnel studies were conducted with modified cross, hemisflo, and disk-gap-band parachute models in the wake of a cone-cylinder shape forebody. The basic cross design was modified with the addition of a circumferential constraining band at the lower edge of the canopy panels. The tests covered a Mach number range of 0.3 to 1.2 and a dynamic pressure range from 479 Newtons per square meter to 5746 Newtons per square meter. The parachute models were flexible textile-type structures and were tethered to a rigid forebody with a single flexible riser. Different size models of the modified cross and disk-gap-band canopies were tested to evaluate scale effects. Model reference diameters were 0.30, 0.61, and 1.07 meters (1.0, 2.0, and 3.5 ft) for the modified cross; and nominal diameters of 0.25 and 0.52 meter (0.83 and 1.7 ft) for the disk-gap-band; and 0.55 meter (1.8 ft) for the hemisflo. Reefing information is presented for the 0.61-meter-diameter cross and the 0.52-meter-diameter disk-gap-band. Results are presented in the form of the variation of steady-state average drag coefficient with Mach number. General stability characteristics of each parachute are discussed. Included are comments on canopy coning, spinning, and fluttering motions.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 39 (thesis year 1994) a total of 13,953 thesis titles from 21 Canadian and 159 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 39 reports theses submitted in 1994, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book excerpt: Interest has been shown in the performance of parachutes towed in water, particularly as a means of stress investigation and strength testing which could be applied to a full size parachute towed behind boats in open water. In order to investigate the performance of parachutes in water under controlled conditions, a comparison was made of the same small parachutes, 2 feet in diameter, towed in the No. 1 Model Ship Tank National Physical Laboratory and flown in the No. 2, 11.5 foot wind tunnel, Royal Aircraft Establishment. These tests are described in this note. It is found that the drag area of the same parachute towed in water is higher than when tested in the wind tunnel at the same order of dynamic perssures. One contribution is that the canopy fabric is more porous to air than water. The opening shock factors were larger in the wind tunnel than in the ship tank, and this is thought to be because of the greater rate of loading in air by the associated air mass.

Book excerpt: Wind-tunnel tests have been made in the Langley transonic dynamics tunnel on a 0.25-scale model of Sandia Laboratories 3.96-meter (13-foot), slanted ribbon design, lifting parachute. The lifting parachute is the first stage of a proposed two-stage payload delivery system. The lifting parachute model was attached to a foerbody representing the payload. The forebody was designed and installed in the test section in a manner which allowed rotational freedom about the pitch and yaw axes. Values of parachute axial force coefficient, rolling moment coefficient, and payload trim angles in pitch and yaw are presented through the transonic speed range. Data are presented for the parachute in both the reefed and full open conditions. Time history records of lifting parachute deployment and disreefing tests are included.

Book excerpt: Exploratory wind-tunnel tests of the disk-gap-band and modified ringsail parachute configurations have been conducted at dynamic pressures between 0.24 and 7.07 lb/ft2 (11 and 339 N/m2). Both parachutes exhibited positive inflation characteristics over the range of the tests within technique limitations. The disk-gap-band configuration required less time and distance to inflate than the modified ringsail configuration did.

Our general approach has been to treat the parachute as we would other aerodynamic problems such as vehicle stability. We have endeavored to conduct scaled parachute model tests in the wind tunnel to study forces, pressures, and dynamic stability of vehicle-parachute systems.

Book excerpt: This research program covers the detailed investigation of gliding parachutes and their necessary guidance and control systems to achieve a controlled approach to a touchdown at a preselected site. Theoretical and analytical investigations have been conducted to determine system feasibility and performance limits; and to establish the configuration of a flexible, self- inflating canopy capable of meeting the program objectives. A series of exploratory wind tunnel tests with small model steerable parachutes has been conducted to substantiate the findings of the analytical investigation and further define the detail design of the most promising configurations. Additional tests with large scale models in the form of tow tests, wind tunnel tests, and free-flight deployment tests, have been conducted to demonstrate aerodynamic characteristics; and to obtain essential data for use as design criteria for an integrated steerable parachute system. The results of this research program, reported herein, has culminated in the design of a flexible, self-inflating, steerable parachute canopy which has demonstrated in wind tunnel tests a maximum lift-to-drag ratio of 2:1; has been deployed in free-flight tests at velocities up to 150 knots; and has demonstrated a turn rate of approximately thirty (30) degrees-per-second.

Book excerpt: Wind tunnel and drop tests were made on model parachutes of various types, to study the influence o[n] performance of such factors as design, shape, size, load, porosity, and line length. All the unstable parachutes which were tested, such as solid flat, solid conical, and solid spherical types, have a pronounced increase in the drag coefficient C[subscript]D with decreasing rate of descent in the range of 35 to 8[0 fps]. The stable prarachutes, including the high porosity, pseudo-ribbon, guided surface, and ribbon, have a practically constant C[subscript]D. Square and triangular parachutes have higher drag than round parachutes o[f the] same area. Thirty-degree-conical and quarter-spherical parachutes have higher drag than flat and hemispherical parachutes. The Airfoil parachute has higher drag than the standard flat parachute an[d] is fairly stable. The length of the suspension lines influences the drag.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents results of an experimental study of the parachute inflation process. The investigation was carried out in a low speed wind tunnel using small cloth models, and an analysis is presented which gives a basis for extrapolation of the data recorded to any reasonably low Mach number case. The drag of the parachutes and the shapes of the canopies during the inflation process are studied in considerable detail, and some qualitative studies of the flow fields are conducted. The principle variables studied are parachute type, velocity (dynamic pressure), and canopy porosity. The theoretical analysis develops a procedure by which full scale characteristics can be predicted from wind tunnel data, and several examples are computed to illustrate the technique.

This book was released on 1946 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary: Tests of spin-recovery parachutes on six models of typical fighter and trainer airplanes were conducted in the Langley 20-foot free-spinning tunnel to obtain data for correlating model and full-scale results. Parachutes attached to the tail of the models, to the out wing tip (left wing tip for a right spin), to the inner wing tip, and to both wing tips were tested. The results indicated that parachutes of the same size and type were more effective as spin-recovery devices when they were attached to the outer wing tip in the spin than when they were attached to the tail. The diameter of the outer wing-tip parachute required for a 2-turn recovery by parachute action alone varied from 4 to 7 feet. Parachutes attached to the inner wing tip would not effect recovery. When parachutes attached to both wing tips were used for recovery, the parachute diameters required were of the same order as for tail parachutes. The diameter of the tail parachute required for a 2-turn recovery by parachute action alone varied from 6.5 to 12.5 feet for the airplane designs used.
