Book Synopsis Southern Hoofprints by : Garry Allison
Download or read book Southern Hoofprints written by Garry Allison and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One-part lively oral history, one-part meticulously researched encyclopaedia, and one-part wild ride, Southern Hoofprints colorfully conveys the story of horse racing in Southern Alberta. And in so doing, it also becomes a fascinating history of the region itself, from the late 1880s through to the present day. From racing’s rough, Wild West beginnings to the vast grandstands of modern times, this regional history of the Sport of Kings has been deeply researched and is delivered in a unique and engaging fashion. With wry humour and occasional pulse-throbbing drama, the reader is treated to an intimate perspective on family traditions of husband and wife owners, the dynasties of multi-generational riders, the spectators, and even the horses themselves. The chronicle of the rise of women riders from the trivialized ‘powder puff’ races to becoming power players on the track, and that of the First Nations people from the early days through to today, make this a completely inclusive history. It tells a distinctly Canadian story and its focus on the Southern Alberta region allows it to paint the picture in vivid detail. With its historical data enriched and enlivened through the human dimension of the oral histories, Southern Hoofprints entertainingly recounts horse-racing’s triumphs, tragedies, and continual reinvention.
Book Synopsis Bad Day at Willow Creek by : Ralph Cotton
Download or read book Bad Day at Willow Creek written by Ralph Cotton and published by Cotton-Branch Publishing. This book was released on 2019-06-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lawrence Shaw, aka Fast Larry, aka the Fastest Gun Alive, in this 4th book in the Gunman’s Reputation series, appears to have given up . . . but not just yet. First, he will take Rita Vargas to Willow Creek in search of William Bonney—the infamous Billy the Kid—who, unbeknownst to the Kid, is the father of her unborn child. On Shaw’s trail are gunmen hell-bent to leave him dead on the ground, not realizing that having people out to kill him might be the only thing that keeps “Fast Larry” alive. Lawrence Shaw had heard the thunder of horses’ hooves from the north trail long before the five riders slid the animals to a halt out front of the plank shack. He’d heard them stop suddenly, fifty yards away, and he’d pictured the riders sitting there discussing him in the pale purple darkness, deciding the best way to kill him. After a moment he’d heard the horses come forward again, this time slower, with stealth and deliberation. Oh, yes, they mean to kill me, Shaw told himself. . . . He did none of the things a man might do under such dire circumstances. Shaw had lost interest in such matters of life and death. They would arrive to kill him; but he would kill them instead. It was that simple. The matter deserved no deeper thought.

Download or read book Bourbon's Backroads written by Karl Raitz and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-06-29 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kentucky's landscape is punctuated by landmark structures that signpost bourbon's venerable story: distilleries long-standing, relict, razed, and brand new, the grand nineteenth-century homes of renowned distillers, villages and neighborhoods where distillery laborers lived, Whiskey Row storage warehouses, river landings and railroad yards, and factories where copper distilling vessels and charred white oak barrels are made. During the nineteenth century, distilling changed from an artisanal craft practiced by farmers and millers to a large-scale mechanized industry that practiced increasingly refined production techniques. Distillers often operated at comparatively remote sites—along the "backroads"—to take advantage of water sources or river or turnpike transport access. As time passed, steam power and mechanization freed the industry from its reliance on waterpower and permitted distillers to relocate to urban and rural rail-side sites. This shift also allowed distillers to perfect their production techniques, increase their capacity, and refine their marketing strategies. The historic progression produced the "fine" Kentucky bourbons that are available to present day consumers. Yet, distillers have not abandoned their cultural roots and traditions; their iconic products embrace the modern while also engaging their history and geography. Blending several topics—inventions and innovations in distilling and transport technologies, tax policy, geography, landscapes, and architecture—this primer and geographical guide presents an accessible and detailed history of the development of Kentucky's distilling industry and explains how the industry continues to thrive.
