On one hand, this publication seeks to introduce a theoretical discourse on Depth Configurations in architecture and urban design, as the built environment we inhabit can be understood as a territorial organisation of space, defined by different models of proximity and permeability. One of the main aspects of this discourse is the way in which territorial boundaries are defined in architecture and landscape design. This theory, focusing on the in-between scale and related to urban projects, considers the design and appropriation of collective space as its Leitmotiv: the way individual or collective use of space is demarcated or suggested may intimate its actual qualities. On the other hand, the notebook seeks to prove the relevance of this theoretical framework by presenting case studies of New York City as a part of the Streetscape Territories Research Project conducted at the LUCA/KULeuven University, campus Sint Lucas in Brussels and Ghent. The project is supported by a series of Masters Dissertation Projects developed within the theoretical framework of Depth Configurations and focused on the changing neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn in New York City. Finally, this notebook is presented in conjunction with an academic roundtable discussion in New York and seeks to stimulate a broad but critical reflection on the future role and nature of urban projects in a rapidly changing environment. More, it hopes to avoid architectural prejudices about the way people produce, transform, or inhabit space and to consider its multiple physical, social, cultural, economical, and environmental dimensions.

Book excerpt: this is the third in the series of Streetscape Territories Notebooks that describes concepts and cases of design and analysis in architecture and urban design, focusing on the way different collective spaces, fueled by different activities, are defining contemporary streetscapes. This publication will focus specifically on the challenges and potentials of streetscapes of manufacturing and their economic, social or cultural meaning. Streetscape Territories is an international research project that deals with territorial organization of urban projects, explored in different contexts, studied as part of different cultures and defined by different social networks. Streetscape Territories deals with models of proximity within a street, neighborhood or region and starts from the assumption that urban space, from the domestic scale till the scale of the city, can be understood as a discontinuous collective space, containing different levels of collective use that are defined by multiple physical, cultural or territorial boundaries. This notebook illustrates more than one academic adventure: the first part describes an ongoing design and research project about the Gowanus area in Brooklyn, New York: besides a reading of the context, some proposals are presented to consolidate a socially and economically productive neighborhood for the next decades. The second part samples four master dissertation projects in architecture and urban design and planning, using the Streetscape Territories project as a conceptual and critical framework. The last part illustrates a student project of the international master of architecture program, dealing with depth configurations at the scale of a neighborhood in Ghent. The previously mentioned academic projects focused on models of proximity in the Gowanus Canal and Harbor area: how are the surrounding streetscapes related to the canal? Which are the “sets of relative distances” (De Solà-Morales, 1997) between different buildings, between buil

Book excerpt: During summer and fall 2014, an international collaboration research and design project was set up in New York, called Common Streetscapes, The Low Countries and New York, consisting out of a series of workshops, seminars, round table discussions and site visits with students, professionals and academics of Flanders, The Netherlands and New York. During these activites, different expertises and approaches related to the reading and design of collective spaces were put together and tested by focusing on Coney Island, Brooklyn New York.During summer 2014, following previous research projects and workshops in Williamsburg and Gowanus in New York, an international 10day hands-on transdisciplinary workshop was organised about Coney Island, working with local communities of Kaiser Park, a public park situated at the interior side of Coney Island. Local students and teachers of Pratt Institute New York and Partnerships for Parks, a joint program of Parks & Recreation New York, together with some local stakeholders joined the project besides the delegations of KU Leuven (Faculty of Architecture, campus Sint-Lucas Ghent and Brussels) and TU Delft. Around twenty participants from different European countries discussed and proposed ideas of how to deal with its future streetscapes and waterscapes in this part of the metropolis of New York. The workshop was supported by the Flemish and Dutch Government representatives in New York.Later, in fall 2014, a research and design seminar was organised to follow up the initial outcomes of the workshop and discuss, this time with panels of invited experts from U.S., the main topics that define the reality and future of Coney Island. At the same time, this seminar was the starting point for a master dissertation design studio, conducted at KU Leuven, Faculty of Architecture, International Master of Architecture and a design studio at TU Delft that was finalised at the end of spring 2015.

Book excerpt: This is the eighth in the series of Streetscape Territories Notebooks that deal with research and design projects on streetscapes and collective spaces (previous publications were on Williamsburg New York, Collective Spaces, Raval Barcelona, Gowanus New York, Coney Island New York, Common Streetscapes New York and Havana). Streetscape Territories is the name given to an international research project (KU Leuven, Department of Architecture) that focuses on the transformation of the urban fabric and considers its streetscapes the protagonists. The research deals with the way architectural artifacts, open space, the property structure and its inherent accessibility and permeability configure streetscapes and how their inhabitants can give meaning to them.

Bill in 1944, to the construction of the Interstate Highway System during the late 1950s and the brownstoning movement of the 1970s, throughout the mid-20th-century the United States saw a wave of changes that had an enduring impact on the development of urban spaces. Focusing on the relationship between processes of demolition and restoration as they have shaped the modern built environment, and the processes by which memory is constructed, hidden, or remade in the literary text, this book explores the ways in which history becomes entangled with the urban space in which it plays out. Alice Levick takes stock of this history, both in the form of its externalised, concretised manifestation and its more symbolic representation, as depicted in the mid-20th-century work of a selection of American writers. Calling upon access to archival material and interviews with New York academics, authors, local historians and urban planners, this book locates Freud's 'Uncanny' in the cracks between the absent and present, invisible and visible, memory and history as they are presented in city narratives, demonstrating both the passage of time and the imposition of 20th-century modernism. With reference to the works of D. J. Waldie, Joan Didion, Hisaye Yamamoto, Raymond Chandler, Marshall Berman, Gil Cuadros, Paule Marshall, L. J. Davis, and Paula Fox, Memory and the Built Environment in 20th-Century American Literature unpacks how time becomes visible in Los Angeles, Sacramento, Lakewood, and New York in the decades just before and after the Second World War, questioning how these spaces provide access to the past, in both narrative and spatial forms, and how, at times, this access is blocked.

Book excerpt: What did New York look like four centuries ago? An extraordinary reconstruction of a wild island from the forests of Times Square to the wetlands downtown. Named a Best Book of the Year by Library Journal, New York Magazine, and San Francisco Chronicle On September 12, 1609, Henry Hudson first set foot on the land that would become Manhattan. Today, it’s difficult to imagine what he saw, but for more than a decade, landscape ecologist Eric Sanderson has been working to do just that. Mannahatta: A Natural History of New York City is the astounding result of those efforts, reconstructing in words and images the wild island that millions now call home. By geographically matching an eighteenth-century map with one of the modern city, examining volumes of historic documents, and collecting and analyzing scientific data, Sanderson re-creates topography, flora, and fauna from a time when actual wolves prowled far beyond Wall Street and the degree of biological diversity rivaled that of our most famous national parks. His lively text guides you through this abundant landscape—while breathtaking illustrations transport you back in time. Mannahatta is a groundbreaking work that provides not only a window into the past, but also inspiration for the future. “[A] wise and beautiful book, sure to enthrall anyone interested in NYC history.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review) “A cartographical detective tale . . . The fact-intense charts, maps and tables offered in abundance here are fascinating.” —The New York Times “[An] exuberantly written and beautifully illustrated exploration of pre-European Gotham.” —San Francisco Chronicle “You don’t have to be a New Yorker to be enthralled.” —Library Journal

Book excerpt: "Accompanying a major traveling exhibition, this first-ever survey of the rarely seen notebooks of Basquiat features the artist's handwritten notes, poems, and drawings, along with related works on paper and large-scale paintings. With no formal training, Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) succeeded in developing a new and expressive style to become one of the most influential artists in the postmodern revival of figurative during the 1980s. In a series of notebooks from the early to mid-1980s, never before exhibited, Basquiat combined text and images reflecting his engagement with the countercultures of graffiti and hip-hop in New York City, as well as pop culture and world events. Filled with handwritten texts, poems, pictograms, and drawings, many of them iconic images that recur throughout his artwork-teepees, crowns, skeleton-like silhouettes, and grimacing masks-and these notebooks reveal much about the artist's creative process and the importance of the written word in his aesthetic. With over 150 notebook pages and numerous drawings and paintings, this important book sheds new light on Basquiat's career and his critical place in contemporary art history."--
