Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1900 in China a peasant movement known as the Boxers rose up and tried to destroy its Western oppressors. The culminating event of the Boxer Rebellion was the siege of the Western legations in Peking. In isolated Peking, a horde of brightly dressed, acrobatic, anti-Western and anti-Christian Boxers surrounded the fortified diplomatic legation compound, and rumors about the torture and murder of 900 Western diplomats, soldiers, and missionaries swirled throughout the foreign media. Scholars agree that animosity toward Christian missionaries was a major cause of the Boxer Rebellion, but most accounts neglect the missionaries and emphasize instead the diplomats and soldiers who weathered the siege and defeated the Chinese in battle. This book gives equivalent attention to the missionaries, their work, the impact they had on China, and the controversies arising in the aftermath of the Boxer Rebellion. It focuses particularly on one of the most distinguished American missionaries, William Scott Ament, whose brave and resourceful heroism was tarnished by hubris and looting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William S. Ament: An Ideal Missionary When Mr. William T. Ellis, the newspaper correspondent, who was sent out by the Phil adelphia Press, to investigate missions, arrived 'in Peking, he called first of all upon the Ameri can Ambassador, Mr. Rockhill, so as to get an outside opinion, before looking into the work of the various boards. Without revealing his purpose he asked in a casual manner How about these missionaries, are they any good? Mr. Rockhill replied, Go and see Dr. Ament and his work. If after visiting him you don't become enthusiastic over missions I shall be surprised. This number of the Envelope Se ries is written so that our readers may Go and see Dr. Ament and his work. Now that this wonderfully effective worker has left us we should be able to appreciate his character and work even better than when he was in the midst of his tasks. Mr. Cromer certainly has done his part to make this possible. Later on a book about Dr. Ament will be written by his friend and colleague, Dr. Henry D. Porter. It is a book that will be looked for eagerly and should find a wide circle of readers. This sketch may serve as an introduction to the larger work. We have made an exceedingly advantageous arrangement with Prof. Henry Kalloch Rowe, of Newton Theological Seminary, to write four articles for the Envelope Series, in 1909-10. This will be in the nature of a centennial series, of rare interest and value. The first one will be issued in our October number under the title Around the World One Hundred Years Ago. We want a host of new subscribers for these four numbers and of course expect to hold on to all our old subscribers. Only ten cents, friends. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mark Twain (Samuel Langhorne Clemens, 1835–1910) has had an intriguing relationship with China that is not as widely known as it should be. Although he never visited the country, he played a significant role in speaking for the Chinese people both at home and abroad. After his death, his Chinese adventures did not come to an end, for his body of works continued to travel through China in translation throughout the twentieth century. Were Twain alive today, he would be elated to know that he is widely studied and admired there, and that Adventures of Huckleberry Finn alone has gone through no less than ninety different Chinese translations, traversing China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Looking at Twain in various Chinese contexts—his response to events involving the American Chinese community and to the Chinese across the Pacific, his posthumous journey through translation, and China's reception of the author and his work, Mark Twain in China points to the repercussions of Twain in a global theater. It highlights the cultural specificity of concepts such as "race," "nation," and "empire," and helps us rethink their alternative legacies in countries with dramatically different racial and cultural dynamics from the United States.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original and insightful collection that combines Mark Twain's journal writings with his rarely seen sketches and doodles. Fascinating and often hilarious, this is a complete record of the thoughts, ideas, and observations of the father of American literature. A national treasure and a cultural and literary icon, Mark Twain was called "the father of American literature" by William Faulkner. His beloved works include The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer, and 26 other books. His inimitable prose seamlessly weaves together humor, insight, vivid details, and memorable characters. Along with these published works, Twain, who was also a journalist, produced approximately 40 to 50 pocket notebooks and wrote countless letters, essays, travelogues, and lectures in his lifetime. Mark Twain's Notebooks is the first collection to gather these writings and combine them with dozens of Twain's rarely seen sketches, doodles, and diagrams, as well as facsimiles of his original journal pages, letters, and essays. The result is page after beautifully designed page of some of the best, yet little-known, writings of Mark Twain. Organized by topics such as science, literature, health, family life, and food, the collection also includes intimate letters that describe the home he built in Hartford, Connecticut; his travels across Europe, the Middle East, and the United States; and his agony over the death of his favorite daughter. The writing and art is selected by book and publishing veteran Carlo De Vito, who provides fascinating commentary and insights into the material throughout the book.
