Edmund King offers a complete revision of K. R. Potter's edition of 1955, retaining only the translation, which has been amended in places. Not only is this a new edition but it offers a new text, arguing that what have earlier been seen as William of Malmesbury's final revisions are not from hishand. Rather they seem to come from somewhere in the circle of Robert of Gloucester, the empress's half-brother, to whom the work is dedicated. In this way the work raises important questions concerning the transmission of medieval texts.

The Miracles of the Virgin Mary, written c. 1135 by the Benedictine monk and historian William of Malmesbury (d. 1143), is important on several counts. It belongs to the first wave of collected miracles of the Virgin, produced by English Benedictine monks in the 1120s and '30s. These collections were to be influential across Europe because the stories in them were not connected with a particular shrine, but international. Although only two copies of William's collection survive in anything like its complete and original plan, in a dismembered form it too was influential across Europe and through the rest of the medieval period. The work is written in elegant Latin and embellished with William's customary erudition. His historical instinct is to the fore, as he tries to establish context and credibility for his stories. His ability as a latinist is shown by his frequent quotations and echoes of (sometimes unusual) classical authors. This is an important document in the history of Marian devotion in medieval Europe. In his long Prologue, William argues strongly for the Virgin's Immaculate Conception and bodily Assumption, doctrines still not generally accepted in western Europe at the time. With the appearance of this book all of William of Malmesbury's major works will be available in modern editions and translations.

William follows his precursor in applying the traditional threefold interpretation: literal (historical), allegorical and moral. But he is no slavish imitator. He aims to re-write and improve on his source in both content and style. His characteristic mastery of the Bible and of an astonishingly wide range of classical and patristic literature is everywhere apparent. His Latin is elegant, not to say mannered and sometimes obscure, and presents many problems to the translator.

When the initial case put forth for Bernard was rejected by Innocent II, Geoffrey undertook a revision of the original vita (Recension A) and submitted another version (Recension B) to Pope Alexander III, who declared Bernard a saint in 1174. This work emphasizes the deep love in which Bernard was held during his life by his monks and the people of France and Italy as well as his role as a powerful public figure. This book contains the first English translation of Recension B, drawn from what is apparently the only manuscript of the work found today in a Cistercian monastery, Mount Saint Bernard Abbey. The introduction begins with the story of how this manuscript came to Mount Saint Bernard, so fixing this translation of the Vita prima within Cistercian life from the twelfth century to today.
