Download or read book William Babcock Hazen written by Edward S. Cooper and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At West Point, William Babcock Hazen made a life-long enemy of Custer by arresting him, and during the Civil War he made enemies of Rosecrans and Sheridan. After the war Grant came to hate him. These men accused Hazen of stealing, of cowardice in the face of the enemy, of causing the loss at Chickamauga, of being a dupe of the Indians, and they banished him to Fort Buford in the far northwest. Hazen's life debunks the myth of men who fought side by side bonding together into a brotherhood. Hazen also had running feuds with two secretaries of war. He caused one to be impeached and the other to be publicly disgraced. Even Sherman, after years of friendship, turned against Hazen.

Book Synopsis A Narrative of Military Service by : William Babcock Hazen
Download or read book A Narrative of Military Service written by William Babcock Hazen and published by . This book was released on 1885 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Civil War began in 1861, 30-year-old William Babcock Hazen was a first lieutenant and assistant instructor of infantry tactics at the U.S. Military Academy. At the war's conclusion in 1865, he commanded an army corps with the rank of major general. Two decades later, Hazen wrote A Narrative of Military Service in the midst of controversy which marked the last 25 years of his life, and the book was aimed in large part to silence vituperative criticism of his wartime record. This record included command of the 41st Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment, a brigade in the Army of the Ohio and the Army of the Cumberland, and a division in the Army of the Tennessee. A strict disciplinarian who demanded the best from his men, he gained the lasting respect of General William T. Sherman and enjoyed lifetime friendship with fellow Ohio General James A. Garfield, who became the nation's 20th president. Hazen's colorful, controversy-filled career during and after the Civil War is generally not well known today. To his military contemporaries, however, he was either a thorny anethema or a hero, and by merit or design his name continually was thrust into the public arena. Steadfast in his convictions, he came to be recognized throughout his long service as an able officer and a dangerous enemy. In war as in peace, those who dared cross him did so at their own peril. This reprint edition of Hazen's original 1885 work features the addition of 71 photographs and a new introduction by Richard A. Baumgartner. -- jacket flap of 1993 edition.

Book excerpt: "The name William Babcock Hazen (1830-1887) appears frequently in the annals of Western Americana. More than two decades of his life were spent as an army officer on the successive frontiers of the West. He was closely associated with many of the major events that highlight the great drama of the frontier advance beyond the Cross Timbers and the Wide Missouri. His tours of duty between 1855-1880 took him into the turbulent Oregon Country, throughout the entire Great Plains, and into many sections of the Rocky Mountain region. Through an extended period of personal contact and diligent study, Hazen gained an understanding of the lands beyond the ninety-eighth meridian - and the Indians that claimed them - surpassed by few of this contemporaries. A man of scholarly interests, he authored influential and controversial writings reflecting his insights and fixed views on the agricultural potential of the West, manipulations of railroad interests, and military and government administration. By 1880 he had won a reputation of solid and honorable military service, both on the battlefield and in administrative capacities. Hazen's excellent record, together with his literary publications and involvement in a series of nationally publicized controversies, made him one of the best-known army officers in the United States ... the object of this study is to present a comprehensive account of Hazen's military career in the West, 1855-1850, with an evaluation of his contributions and significance"--Introd.

Book Synopsis William Babcock Hazen by : Cleveland Abbe
Download or read book William Babcock Hazen written by Cleveland Abbe and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-10-21 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cleveland Abbe (December 3, 1838 - October 28, 1916) was an American meteorologist and advocate of time zones. While director of the Cincinnati Observatory in Cincinnati, Ohio, he developed a system of telegraphic weather reports, daily weather maps, and weather forecasts. In 1870, Congress established the U.S. Weather Bureau and inaugurated the use of daily weather forecasts. In recognition of his work, Abbe, who was often referred to as "Old Probability" for the reliability of his forecasts, was appointed the first head of the new service, and is considered the father of the National Weather Service. Cleveland Abbe was born in New York City and grew up in the prosperous merchant family of George Waldo and Charlotte Colgate Abbe. One of his younger brothers, Robert, became a prominent surgeon and radiologist. In school, Cleveland excelled in mathematics and chemistry, attending David B. Scott Grammar School, and graduating in 1857 from the Free Academy with a Bachelor of Arts. While at City College, he learned under Oliver Wolcott Gibbs. He tutored mathematics at the Trinity Latin School in New York City in 1857 and 1858. He then taught engineering, as an assistant professor at the University of Michigan in 1859, followed by a tutoring job, also in engineering, until he left in 1860. During this stay in Michigan, he also was studying astronomy under Franz Brunnow from 1858 to 1859. He received his second degree, a Master of Arts in 1860, from City College. When the Civil War broke out, he tried to join the Union Army; however, he failed the vision test, due to myopia, and spent the war years in Cambridge, Massachusetts, attending Harvard, and working as an assistant to Benjamin Gould, astronomer and head of the Longitude Department of the United States Coast Survey. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Harvard in 1864, which also marked the end of his working at the US Coast Survey. It was while in Cambridge that he rubbed shoulders with scientists from the Nautical Almanac, specifically, William Ferrel, which probably piqued his meteorological curiosity. He then studied abroad in Russia at the Observatory of Pulkovo, as a guest, and returned, in 1866, to the U.S. eager to study astronomy. It was said that he was his happiest while in Russia as he was surrounded by like-minded intellectuals, formed a relationship with Otto Struve, and enjoyed the scenery. His first job in astronomy as at the United States Naval Observatory until he was offered the director position at the Cincinnati Observatory, in 1868, by the Cincinnati Astronomical Society. He spent a few years in Cincinnati, but his interest were already evolving. Remembering that meteorological conditions directly affected the work of astronomers, he began working in the field of meteorology. He won approval to report on and predict the weather, working on the premise that forecasts could and should be generated at minimal expense and in such a way as to perhaps even produce income. By 1873 he was let go by the Cincinnati Observatory due to funding issues and it was then that he made the decision that would change his career path."
