Improve processes by determining your metrics Choose the right software and implement appropriate automation Evaluate and mitigate risks at all steps in the supply chain Help your business function as a system to more effectively meet customer needs We tend to think of the supply chain as suppliers, logistics, and warehousing—but it's so much more than that. As the number of minority entrepreneurs continues to rise, these business owners have recognized the need for B2B opportunities, and supplier diversity programs that create the fastest path to scale and grow a small business. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing much needed clarity and definition to the term 'minority entrepreneur,' this authoritative and timely handbook explores the distinctive challenges that minority communities face when founding and managing new ventures. The handbook is inclusive of any community who might be considered disadvantaged or under-represented in terms of entrepreneurial activity and included are women, youths, seniors, disabled, immigrants, Indigenous peoples, LBGTQ+, ex-offenders, Roma, refugees and many others. Chapters highlight the idiosyncratic nature of the many communities examined before offering frameworks and models that draw together the various findings. With a cast of international contributors, this scholarly handbook discusses the surrounding literature of minority entrepreneurship and takes an all-encompassing approach to its interpretation. It also addresses the sorely under-researched area of entrepreneurial behaviour among minorities and disadvantaged groups. This is particularly important for policymakers tasked with designing and delivering initiatives that are appropriate for the needs of these communities. Ultimately this handbook contributes to existing knowledge by: • providing a current understanding of the literature for each of the communities; • investigating the uniqueness of the entrepreneurial behaviour within the communities; • offering new frameworks/models from which future researchers can build new knowledge. The handbook provides a comprehensive account of an important and fast emerging field of entrepreneurship, and is an invaluable resource for students, researchers and policymakers.

Book excerpt: For over fifty years, proponents of supplier diversity have discussed the positive effect on revenue that comes from using underrepresented suppliers. The problem lies in proving such assertions. For far too long, contracting with businesses owned by women, minorities, and those identifying as LGBTQ has been viewed as a "feel-good" act of corporate citizenship-one that rarely survives the next economic downturn. Hacking Supplier Diversity represents the first time the myriad benefits of a diverse supply chain have been thoroughly detailed and documented. Diversity and Inclusion expert Scott A. Vowels, PhD, redefines supplier diversity, focusing on three core issues: The economic impact of diverse suppliers The ways in which a robust supplier diversity program is a revenue enabler The formula for calculating the return on investment of a supplier diversity program A comprehensive and informative read, Hacking Supplier Diversity does for supplier diversity what Jim Collins' Good to Great and Built to Last did for how companies do business. Utilizing a keen sense of humor and expert storytelling, Vowels makes a definitive argument for supplier diversity as a business imperative.

Book excerpt: The Missing Business Strategy Most agree that options, choices, diversity are a good thing. No financial advisor ever suggested a portfolio of a single stock. We all love having 31 flavors to select from at the ice cream counter. So why is it so hard to see that a diverse supply chain is a necessary business strategy? The connection between diversity and profitability has been shown time and again. Research from McKinsey, Deloitte, and Harvard Business Review show that with diversity, companies make more money. Yet, many struggle to build the business case at their companies. Jamie Crump spent 25+ years in corporate supply chain and supplier diversity. She is a thought leader in both areas and unveils best practices for developing and executing a supplier diversity business strategy in "Backstage Pass: Pulling the Curtain Back on the Business of Supplier Diversity." Crump provides a backstage look at the five primary cast members: C-suite, supplier diversity professional, supply chain professional, diverse business owner and end user. She shows what each brings to the table, their challenges, blind spots and best practices. She then delves into how the cast members can best interact to execute a business strategy that will help recruit and retain talent, keep and win customers, and add money to the bottom line. Her comprehensive six-step model offers a blueprint for success, from how to gain executive support to practical tips on creating new diverse supplier relationships. Crump shows that a supplier diversity business strategy is as basic as sound financials and a good marketing strategy. Whether your organization is B2B, B2C or a combination, if supplier diversity is a missing business strategy at your company, you are leaving money on the table. Find out how to get it back.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increased globalization and diversity has brought with it unique interdependencies. As we experience demographical shifts unlike any other in U.S. history, the growth rate of minority-owned businesses may represent unprecedented opportunity for corporate buyers to partner with minority suppliers. According to the Minority Business Development Agency, the minority population will represent 37.4 percent of the total U.S. population by the year 2020, and will yield purchasing power of $3 trillion. Moreover, it is estimated that between the years 2000 and 2050 the majority of new business starts will originate in the minority business community (U.S. Small Business Administration 1994). Minority-owned firms grew from 7 percent of all U.S. firms to 15 percent between 1982 and 1997. These changes have implications for the corporate supply chain, and relationships with minority suppliers have become increasingly important. Supplier diversity is defined as a proactive business process that seeks to provide all suppliers equal access to supply management opportunities (NAPM, InfoEdge 2001). Supplier diversity programs have been used by firms for over 30 years, yet few minority suppliers have found their way into mainstream processes. One research study found major impediments in supplier diversity programs (Dollinger & Dailey 1989). For example, minority suppliers face higher transaction costs, experience difficulty in dealing with complex bureaucracy, and sometimes had to deal in a hostile environment. Other studies have found major problems with communication (Krause et al. 1999; Kauffman 2001) and commitment (Krause et al. 1999; Carter et al. 1999). Past research has also emphasized the important role of corporate culture for implementing supplier diversity programs (Min 1999; Carter et al. 1999). This dissertation examines the relationship between corporate culture and supplier diversity effectiveness. The study examines how buyer's attitudes toward diversity influence spending levels with diverse suppliers. The general hypothesis is that organizations that have constructive cultures for diversity will have higher levels of spending in supplier diversity programs. The research was conducted using a sample from 250 buyers within a large U.S. heavy-equipment manufacturing firm. The research involved collecting attitudinal data using an Internet-mediated survey questionnaire. Effectiveness was measured based on total spending with minority suppliers and was collected using semi-structured interviewing and archival research.
