Book excerpt: "In the calendar year 1964, the main efforts of the Division of Wildlife Research were directed toward consolidation of recently expanded programs on pesticide-wildlife relations and nuisance-animal control. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worldwide concern in scientific, industrial, and governmental com munities over traces of toxic chemicals in foodstuffs and in both abiotic and biotic environments has justified the present triumvirate of specialized publications in this field: comprehensive reviews, rapidly published progress reports, and archival documentations. These three publications are integrated and scheduled to provide in international communication the coherency essential for nonduplicative and current progress in a field as dynamic and complex as environmental contami nation and toxicology. Until now there has been no journal or other publication series reserved exclUSively for the diversified literature on "toxic" chemicals in our foods, our feeds, our geographical surround ings, our domestic animals, our wildlife, and ourselves. Around the world immense efforts and many talents have been mobilized to tech nical and other evaluations of natures, locales, magnitudes, fates, and toxicology of the persisting residues of these chemicals loosed upon the world. Among the sequelae of this broad new emphasis has been an inescapable need for an articulated set of authoritative publications where one could expect to find the latest important world literature produced by this emerging area of science together with documenta tion of pertinent ancillary legislation.

Book excerpt: U.S. mourning dove population indexes increased by 4% from 1969 to 1970 in the Eastern Management Unit, but declined 2% in the Central Management Unit and 11% in the Western Management Unit. The changes were below the 10-year means, 1960-69, by 3% in the Eastern Unit, 15% in the Central, and 27% in the Western. Regression analyses of the call-count data for 1960-70 indicate a statistically significant downward trend in dove breeding populations in all management units; mean rates of decline were 1% a year in the Eastern Unit, 3% a year in the Central, and 4% in the Western
Book Synopsis Woodcock Status Report, 1970 by : Eldon Ralph Clark
Download or read book Woodcock Status Report, 1970 written by Eldon Ralph Clark and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Information on the current status and population trends of the American woodcock is provided by annual singing-ground surveys over much of the species' breeding range and a wing-collection survey in the eastern United States. the 1970 singing-ground survey showed no change in the breeding population index for the Eastern region, a 3.12% increase for the Western region, and a 2.11% increase rangewide. This index is based on 752 comparable survey routes, all randomly selected, 35% more than the 568 routes used in 1969. The wing-collection survey for the 1969-70 season suggested a decline of 7.03% in productivity the previous summer, a slight decline in the average daily bag per hunter, and a sharper drop of 11.1% in the average seasonal bag. There is evidence that the woodcock harvest and the number of hunters participating increased over previous years, with the 1969-70 harvest exceeding 1.1 million birds. Woodcock research is increasing, with the present emphasis directed to banding on breeding grounds.
