Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nature’s Diplomats explores the development of science-based and internationally conceived nature protection in its foundational years before the 1960s, the decade when it launched from obscurity onto the global stage. Raf De Bont studies a movement while it was still in the making and its groups were still rather small, revealing the geographies of the early international preservationist groups, their social composition, self-perception, ethos, and predilections, their ideals and strategies, and the natures they sought to preserve. By examining international efforts to protect migratory birds, the threatened European bison, and the mountain gorilla in the interior of the Belgian Congo, Nature’s Diplomats sheds new light on the launch of major international organizations for nature protection in the aftermath of World War II. Additionally, it covers how the rise of ecological science, the advent of the Cold War, and looming decolonization forced a rethinking of approach and rhetoric; and how old ideas and practices lingered on. It provides much-needed historical context for present-day convictions about and approaches to the preservation of species and the conservation of natural resources, the involvement of local communities in conservation projects, the fate of extinct species and vanished habitats, and the management of global nature.

Book excerpt: In the 1950s biologists became alarmed by the plight of Africa’s wildlife. Since then they have sought to arrest its decline, but increasing competition between wild fauna and expanding human populations shows that protection alone has been inadequate. The conservationists’ position and strategies have been progressively eroded: large-scale game cropping schemes have failed to produce expected revenues, the consequences of the tourist industry have been unexpectedly detrimental, and educational programs have rarely convinced rural Africans to conserve resources. Dr. Marks argues that the management and conservation of wild animals in Third World countries must include cultural as well as biological dimensions and that changes in human social systems will be necessary to sustain wildlife and the environmental processes. He describes indigenous attempts to manage wildlife and suggests new research initiatives that would lead to wildlife policies more in keeping with human development needs and with the realities of the rural countryside.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norman Carr (1912-1997) devoted his life to the conservation of wildlife and their habitat. He saw that this could only be achieved with the involvement and support of the local people who should benefit from it. He was the founder of game viewing safaris in Zambia. In the 1950s he enabled the establishment of a game reserve which became the Nsefu Sector of South Luangwa National Park and with Chief Nsefu he established the first camp for tourists within it. He was also influential in the development of the Kafue National Park. Carr skilfully manipulated central and local bureaucracies before and after Zambia's Independence, established a safari company which outlived him and now runs five lodges in the Luangwa Valley, pioneered walking safaris, wrote several books and raised two lion cubs which were successfully returned to the wild.
