Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Timos done them all! To the Gemfields from the building sites, hes had some epic journeys filled with adventures that tested his strength, courage, and determination through the trials, tribulations, triumphs, and tragedies. They include a five-year sail around the world with his wife and daughter on their yacht Iceberg. In 1999, he was the first man to paddle an outrigger sea kayak from Fraser Island to Cape York Peninsula. It was a four-and-a-half month journey, pitting him against some of the worst weather conditions, not to mention the man eating sharks and saltwater crocodiles, and he survived by collecting rainwater and hunting for his food with his throwing spear. Then in 2003, he walked one-thousand-plus kilometers, pulling a trolley loaded with his supplies, from Mareeba to Cape York, the most northern point of Australia. A few years later, in 2006, he rode a pushbike 2,300 kilometers from the Gold Coast to Kangaroo Island in South Australia. With a combination of memories and daily journal entries, he captures the spirit of Australia in a very unique way. Like his Viking ancestors, Timo not only survived, but beat the odds.

They made their living as Corn Gatherers. In the evening after a long day of work, Finn would sit by the fire and listen to her grandad tell stories of great adventures beyond the cornfield. His stories were very exciting and Finn would dream of taking a journey of her own to these places far away. Soon Finn decided she would have an adventure and over the next few months, she began to gather the things she would take with her putting them in a knapsack to hide them away until she left. One particular day her granddad handed her a small compass and winked. He told her that the arrow always pointed north so she could always find her way home. Finn met many new friends on her journey and faced a few dangers as well. She saw wondrous things and tasted new and delicious foods. Finn also learned that the world is an exciting place with friends to be gathered. However, home is always in your heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are living in the midst of the Earth’s sixth great extinction event, the first one caused by a single species: our own. In Wild Dog Dreaming, Deborah Bird Rose explores what constitutes an ethical relationship with nonhuman others in this era of loss. She asks, Who are we, as a species? How do we fit into the Earth’s systems? Amidst so much change, how do we find our way into new stories to guide us? Rose explores these questions in the form of a dialogue between science and the humanities. Drawing on her conversations with Aboriginal people, for whom questions of extinction are up-close and very personal, Rose develops a mode of exposition that is dialogical, philosophical, and open-ended. An inspiration for Rose—and a touchstone throughout her book—is the endangered dingo of Australia. The dingo is not the first animal to face extinction, but its story is particularly disturbing because the threat to its future is being actively engineered by humans. The brazenness with which the dingo is being wiped out sheds valuable, and chilling, light on the likely fate of countless other animal and plant species. "People save what they love," observed Michael Soulé, the great conservation biologist. We must ask whether we, as humans, are capable of loving—and therefore capable of caring for—the animals and plants that are disappearing in a cascade of extinctions. Wild Dog Dreaming engages this question, and the result is a bold account of the entangled ethics of love, contingency, and desire.

This multidisciplinary work provides a critical analysis of the inspirational and transformational role that books play in travel imaginings. Does reading a book encourage us to think of travel as exotic, adventurous, transformative, dangerous or educative? Do different genres of books influence a reader's view of travel in multifarious ways? These questions are explored through a literary analysis of an eclectic selection of books spanning the period from the eighteenth century to the present day. Genres covered include historical fiction, children's books, westerns, science-fiction and crime fiction.

Book excerpt: Incorporates the latest discoveries and theories from archaeology, genetics, history, and linguistics to paint a spirited history of European settlement Who are the Europeans and where did they come from? In recent years scientific advances have released a mass of data, turning cherished ideas upside down. The idea of migration in prehistory, so long out of favor, is back on the agenda. New advances allow us to track human movement and the spread of crops, animals, and disease, and we can see the evidence of population crashes and rises, both continent-wide and locally. Visions of continuity have been replaced with a more dynamic view of Europe’s past, with one wave of migration followed by another, from the first human arrivals in Europe to the Vikings. Ancient DNA links Europe to its nearest neighbors. It is not a new idea that farming was brought from the Near East, but genetics now reveal an unexpectedly complex process in which farmers arrived not in one wave, but several. Even more unexpected is the evidence that the European gene pool was stirred vigorously many times after farming had reached most of Europe. Climate change played a part in this upheaval, but so did new inventions such as the c and wheeled vehicles. Genetic and linguistic clues also enhance our understanding of the upheavals of the Migration Period, the wanderings of steppe nomads, and the adventures of the Vikings.

Once the reserve of only the most hardcore enthusiasts, ultra running is now a thriving global industry, with hundreds of thousands of competitors each year. But is the rise of this most brutal and challenging sport—with races that extend into hundreds of miles, often in extreme environments—an antidote to modern life, or a symptom of a modern illness? In The Rise of the Ultra Runners, award-winning author Adharanand Finn travels to the heart of the sport to investigate the reasons behind its rise and discover what it takes to join the ranks of these ultra athletes. Through encounters with the extreme and colorful characters of the ultramarathon world, and his own experiences of running ultras everywhere from the deserts of Oman to the Rocky Mountains, Finn offers a fascinating account of people testing the boundaries of human endeavor.
