Auf dieser Grundlage wird der Aufsatz von Searle „Austin on Locutionary and Illocutionary Acts“ betrachtet. Da er eine explizite Antwort auf Austin darstellt, lassen sich daran zum einen die Schwächen in Austins Theorie, zum andern die Weiterentwicklungen durch Searle sehr gut darstellen. Die Arbeit hat somit einen ausschliesslich deskriptiven Charakter und soll die Gedankengänge der beiden frühen Sprechakttheoretiker in einer überschaubaren Weise darstellen. In einem ersten, etwas ausführlicheren Teil der Arbeit wird die Auseinandersetzung Austins mit dem vermeintlichen Gegensatz von performativen und konstativen Äusserungen und die daraus resultierende neue Sprechakttheorie aufgezeigt. In einem zweiten Teil werden die Ergebnisse aus der Optik Searles kommentiert und weiterentwickelt. Zur verwendeten Literatur bleibt noch zu sagen, dass für die Arbeit die Originaltexte, sofern vorhanden in deutscher Übersetzung, verwendet wurden. Es wurde bewusst auf die Betrachtung von weiteren kommentierenden Werken verzichtet, um die Theorie Austins ausschliesslich aus der Optik Searles betrachten zu können.

Sie dient als Beitrag zur Klärung der Frage nach dem Gebrauch einer Äußerung, z.B. inwiefern etwas Gesagtes eine Handlung darstellt. Mit anderen Worten: Inwieweit tut man etwas, indem man etwas sagt bzw. in welcher Weise tut man etwas, dadurch, dass man etwas sagt. Der Einfluss dieser Theorie erstreckt sich auf fast alle Formen analytischer Überlegungen über Sprache. So liefert sie der angelsächsischen Philosophie der normalen Sprache ein neues methodisches Instrumentarium für die Behandlung philosophischer Probleme, der Linguistik eine neue Dimension in der Beschreibung sprachlicher Äußerungen sowie der Kommunikationstheorie Kategorien für die Analyse kommunikativer Interaktionen. Der Schwerpunkt der A rbeit liegt auf der Untersuchung des Performativen bei Austin, nämlich auf der Verwendung der Sprache in einer konkreten Situation. So befasst sich der Abschnitt Performative und konstative Äußerungen mit den bedeutungstheoretischen Grundlagen der Sprechakttheorie und zeigt die sprachtheoretischen Konsequenzen. In dem Abschnitt Primär performative und explizit performative Äußerungen werden verschiedene performative Äußerungen untersucht, die zum einen mehrdeutig, äquivok und vage bleiben, zum anderen einen Handlungscharakter haben, der aus den sprachlichen Ausdrucksmitteln selbst schon deutlich hervorgeht. Der Abschnitt Kriterien für performative Äußerungen beschreibt grammatische und lexikographische Unterscheidungsmerkmale für eine präzise Distinktion zwischen performativen und konstativen Äußerungen. Eben diese Unterscheidung zwischen performativen und konstativen Äußerungen ist ein zentrales, insbesondere den Sprachwissenschaftler interessierendes Problem der sprechakttheoretischen Diskussion. Lassen sich einheitliche Kriterien für performative Äußerungen finden, die eine eindeutige Unterscheidung mit konstativen ermöglichen? Die vorliegende Arbeit setzt sich u.a. mit dieser Fragestellung auseinander. Ferner beschäftigt sich diese Arbeit im Abschnitt Das Performative in der Literatur mit der Frage, inwiefern sich diese für die Alltagssprache und die normale Sprechsituation erstellten Untersuchungstheorien in Bezug auf das Performative auf literarische Texte übertragen lassen. Anschließend erklärt der Autor, wie man einen Sprechakt vollziehen kann beziehungsweise welche Voraussetzungen die Aussage dabei erfüllen muss. Danach werden Austins drei Teilakte des Sprechakts (Aufbau für Sprechakt) mit Searles vier Teilakten des Sprechakts verglichen. Abschließend erklärt der Autor erkläre die Unterschiede zwischen Austins und Searles Taxonomie der illokutionären Akte. Wahrheit ist ein immer wiederkehrendes Thema in der Philosophie: Gegenstände, die man als "wahr" oder "nicht wahr" einstufen kann, sind für Philosophen besonders interessant. Einer davon ist die Aussage. Philosophen haben lange nach einer Bedingung gesucht, auf deren Basis man feststellen kann, ob eine Aussage wahr oder nicht wahr ist. Nach Meinung von damaligen Philosophen haben Aussagen nur eine Beschreibungsfunktion. Und diese Beschreibung muss entweder echt oder unecht sein. Diese Ansicht ist aber einseitig. John L. Austin hat in seiner Vorlesung aufgezeigt, dass die Definition für Aussagen oder Aussagesätze nicht zufriedenstellend ist. Austin hat die Gedanken seiner zeitgenössischen Philosophen stark kritisiert. Dadurch hat er auch die Entwicklung der Sprachwissenschaft gefördert. Diesbezüglich folgte ihm sein Student John R. Searle. Er hat die Sprechakttheorie auf eine wissenschaftlichere Weise verbessert. Dies gilt insbesondere für die Klassifikation von Sprechakten.

Drawing on the archives of the United Nations, France, Great Britain, Ghana, and Cameroon, as well as oral sources, Nation of Outlaws, State of Violence chronicles the spread of the Union des populations du Cameroun (UPC) nationalist movement from the late 1940s into the first postcolonial decade. It shows how, in the French and British Cameroon territories administered as UN Trusteeships after the Second World War, notions of international human rights, the promise of Third World independence, Pan-African federation, and national citizenship blended with local political and spiritual practices that resurfaced as the period of European rule came to a close. After French and British administrators banned the party in the mid-1950s, UPC nationalists adopted violence as a revolutionary strategy. In the 1960s, the nationalist vision disintegrated. The postcolonial regime labeled UPC nationalists “outlaws” and rounded them up for imprisonment or execution as the state shifted to single-party rule in 1966. Nation of Outlaws, State of Violence traces the connection between local and transregional politics in the age of Africa’s decolonization and the early decades of the Cold War. Rather than stop at official independence as most conventional histories of African nationalist movements do, this book considers postindependence events as crucial to the history of Cameroonian nationalism and to an understanding of the postcolonial government that came to power on 1 January 1960. While the history of the UPC is a story that ends with the party’s failure to gain access to political power with independence, it is also a story of the postcolonial state’s failure to become a nation.
