Mehr als je zuvor werden die Grundlagen für eine digitale Zukunft gelegt, die das zukünftige Leben und Wirtschaftsleben in einem fast unvorhersehbaren Ausmaß verändern werden. Grundlegende Veränderungen sind unerlässlich. Es geht nicht mehr um die Frage, ob eine digitale Transformation notwendig ist, sondern wie und mit welcher Geschwindigkeit der einzelne Händler sie umsetzen kann, denn die Zukunft hat bereits begonnen. Da diese Arbeit während der Covid-19-Pandemie verfasst wurde und dazu noch keine wissenschaftlich fundierten Ergebnisse für den stationären Einzelhandel vor-liegen, wird der Einfluss des Corona-Virus trotz seiner massiven Auswirkungen auf den Einzelhandelssektor nicht in direkter Weise berücksichtigt. Natürlich lässt ein Blick in die deutschen Innenstädte die korrekte Vermutung zu, dass der Handel nach wie vor zu einem großen Teil in Geschäften stattfindet. Ein zweiter, etwas genauerer Blick offenbart jedoch eine tiefe Identitätskrise des stationären Handels, die eine beispiellose Disruptionswelle mit sich bringt. Für besorgte Bürgermeister gehören die möglichen Folgen des Strukturwandels im Einzelhandel längst zum Standardrepertoire der Bedrohungen. Tageszeitungen warnen vor Geisterstädten. Die Frage ist nicht mehr, ob eine digitale Transformation notwendig ist, sondern wie und mit welcher Geschwindigkeit der Einzelhändler sie umsetzen kann, denn die Zukunft hat bereits begonnen. In der Konsequenz werden viele Unternehmen in den kommenden Jahren gezwungen sein, sich völlig neu auszurichten, um den veränderten Anforderungen mit neuen Strukturen gerecht zu werden. Die aktive Gestaltung und Umsetzung eines Digital-Fitness-Programms unterstützt diesen Veränderungsprozess für Einzelhändler, um einer positiven Zukunft in der Einzelhandelslandschaft entgegenzuwirken. Dabei geht es um die langfristige und strategische Umsetzung der digitalen Transformation in den eigenen Handelsbetrieben. Die Kernthesen dieser Arbeit lassen Behauptungen zu, dass die folgenden Faktoren die Umsetzung eines Digital-Fitness-Programms eines Einzelhändlers begünstigen.
